Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that we, (1) LEE S. CHAD- WICK and (2) CARL C. REHMER, citizens of the United States, residing at (1). 'East Cleveland and (2) Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastening Means for Oven-Doors and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fastening means for oven doors or the like, particularly when constructed of sheet metal and therefore subject more or less to distortion.
The objects sought to be attained are the production of a comparatively simple and inexpensive yet thoroughly efiicient fastening means which may be incorporated in especiall of the class oven doors or the like, above referred to, and which Wlll effectually thereto; and to include a single actuating means for operating the fastening means throughout the extent thereof and which, preferably, acts to lock the fastening meansin effective condition against accidental displacement;
To these ends the invention consists essentially of a rock shaft supported for oscillation along one edge of the closure, the rock shaft having fingers for cooperation with the frame, and a latch or bolt pivoted adjacent another edge of the closure for cooperation with the frame and having means for turning it, together with connections between said bolt and the aforesaid shaft whereby a turning of the bolt will operate the afore said shaft, the parts preferably being so deto cause the shaft to be locked in effective condition when the bolt is in fastening position.
While we have referred to the fastening means as being carried by the closure, it is obvious that the same might be carried bv the frame or structure for coiiperation with the closure, and such a reversal is drawin we have shown the present preferred embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section through an oven, the view being taken as looking toward the door which is equipped with our improved fastening means; Flg. 2 is a frag ment of Fig. 1 and shows the fastening means in ineffective position; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on lines 3 --3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4- is a sectional view on the correspondingly numbered line of Fig. 1 showing the hinge connection between the closure and the oven wall.
To illustrate a practical application of our invention, we have elected to show it associated with an oven of the sheet metal variety, the same comprising a top 1, bottom 2, side walls 3, and a front wall l, the latter having an opening 5, the top, bottom and side edges of which have flanges 6, 7, and 8, respectively, that are turned inward at substantially right angles to the body portion of the front wall, and then away from the opening in a plane substantially parallel to that of the wall. Hinged to the front wall lin the usual manner and at one side of the opening 5, is a door 10, the front wall being reinforced by an inwardly opening channel 11, the hinge members 12 being shown as extending through the wall and the web of the channel and spread therebeyond (Fig. 4c) ,in accordance with the usual practice. The door 10 may be provided with panels 13. The foregoing features constitute no part of our: present invention, and further detailed illustration or description of them is deemed unnecessary.
The door 10 is constructed of a front plate 15 and a liner 16, the latter being spaced from the former by having portions 17, adjacent its edges, turned at an angle to its body portion toward the front plate and then outward in a plane substantially parallel to its body portion, as shown at 19, the edges of the front plate being bent inward and about the portion 1% to hold plate and liner securely together. At about the cent r of the free edge of the docs-t. e. the one opposite tr e hinged edge -the liner is pressed into contac th the plate for some distance i the edge, to of a handle "e of the the the front liner .16 and within 'rock shaft supported by cavity 20, and a latcn or bolt 25 is fixed in any suitable manner to the inner end of the shank so as to be turned by the handle. The 'bolt is provided with an arm 26. for cooperation with the flange 8 of the front wall. The bolt is further equipped with a branch 27, which is disposed at substantially right angles to the arm 26, and said branch has connection, through a link 28, with the crank arm 30 of a shaft 31 that is supported parallel with the top edge of the door inside the the angle between its body portion and the top inclined portion 17 thereof, the arm 30 projecting through a slot 32 of the liner. The shaft is journaled within suitable bearing elements 33 that are set into slotted portion of the liner. Adjacent each of its ends, the shaft 31 is provided with a finger 35, the same being formed according to our present design by buckling the shaft to produce U-shaped offsets thereof.
shown in Fig. l, the shaft 31 is reason of its connection with the bolt through link 28, to a position whereinthe fingers 35 are forcefully engaged with the flange 6 of the front wall.
It will be observed that when the parts are in this position thepoint of the connection between link 28 and branch 27 of bolt 25 is beyond a direct line between the axis of the handle 22 and the connection between the opposite end of link 28 and the crank arm of shaft 31. In other words, said point is thrown over-center -using a common mechanical expression-when the parts are in locking position. When in such position, a lug 46 of branch 27 engages link 28 to prevent further movement of the bolt in the direction in which it is turned to lock the parts. By turning the bolt in the opposite direction sufficiently to disengage its arm 26 from flange 8, the shaft 31 is rocked to remove its fingers 35 from flange 6.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is v 1. The combination, with a pair of elements, one constituting a frame and the other a closure, of fastening means for the closure, said fastening means comprising a one element substantially parallel to one edge of the closure, said shaft having a finger for holding engagement with the second element, a bolt movably supported by the first element adjacent another edge of theclosure and arranged for locking engagement with the sec ond element, and operative connections between the bolt and the rock shaft whereby when one is actuated it will operate the other, the parts being so constructed that when the bolt is in holding position, the shaft is locked in holding position against accidental displacement.

The combination with a pair of elements, one constituting a frame and the other a closure, of fastening means for the closure, said fastening means comprising a rock shaft supported by one element substantially parallel to the edge of the closure, said shaft having a finger for holding engagement with the second element, a bolt rotatably supported by the first element adjacent another edge of the closure and arranged for locking engagement with the second element, the rock shaft having a crank arm or it'sequivalent, a link between the crank arm and bolt whereby when the bolt is rotated to locking position it will rock the shaft to move the finger thereof into holding position, and a stop for limiting the rotation of the bolt in the direction toward locking position, the stoppage of the bolt being effected after the. point of connection between the bolt and link have been thrown over center as described.

7 The combination of a pair of elements, one constituting a frame and the other a closure, and a fastening means for the closure; said fastening means comprising a rock shaft element substantially parallel to one edge of the closure and buckled at spaced points intermediate its ends to produce fingers for holding engagement with the second element, one end of the shaft being turned laterally to produce, in effect, a crank arm and looped to form an eye, a bolt rotatably supported by the first element adjacent another edge of the closure and arranged for locking engagement with the second element, and a link having one of its ends pivotally connected to the bolt and its opposite end provided with an eye that is linked to the eye of the laterally turned end of the shaft.

respectively, an arm and a finger for holding engagement with the frame, and operative connections between the bolt and shaft whereby rotation of the bolt will rock the shaft. 1
9. The combination of a frame, and a closure hinged thereto along one edge, an operating handle having a shank extending through an aperture 1n the closure adjacent another edge thereof, a bolt fixed to one end of the shaft and having a portion for locking engagement with the frame, a rock shaft supported by the closure parallel to a further edge thereof that is at right angles to the edge adjacent which the bolt is situated, a rock shaft having a finger for holding engagement with the frame, the rock sha t including a crank arm or its equivalent, and a link connecting whereby when the bolt is turned to engage its aforesaid portion with the frame, the shaft will be rocked to engage its finger with the frame.

The combination of a frame, and a closure hinged at one edge to a side of the frame, a bolt rotatably carried by the edge of the closure opposite the hinged edge thereof and having a portion for locking engagement with the frame, means for rotating the bolt, a rock shaft supported by the closure along an edge thereof at right angles to that adjacent which the bolt is situated, said rock shaft having a finger for holding engagement with the frame, the shaft having an offset constituting, in effect, a crank arm, a link connecting the crank arm and bolt, a stop limiting the rotation of the bolt toward efiective position, said stop becoming effective when the connection between the link and the bolt is thrown over center.
11. The combination, with a pair of elements, one constituting a frame and the other a closure, of fastening means for the closure, said fastening means comprising a rock shaft supported by one element adjacent one edge of the closure, said shaft having a finger for holding engagement with the second element, a bolt movably supported by the first the crank arm with the bolt element adjacent another edge of the closure LEE s.
