T oaZZ whom it may concern:
Be \it known that I, RUFUS T. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented 5 the Hanger, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple, compact and inexpensive form of hanger for mounting in the ceilings, beams, girders, walls, etc., of buildings, for the support of structures such as light fixtures, brackets, bearings, etc.,the invention more especially contemplating a novel device adapted to permit of the insertion of a headed structure and its subsequent retention.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hanger or insert with retaining elements of novel form and mode of operation, for engaging and preventing the withdrawal of a headed structure after this has been inserted ;-the arrangement being such as to permit of a limited lateral adjustment of said headed structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ceiling insert or han er of the above noted general type which w iile inexpensive to construct, shall be substantial and structurally strong as well as of sucha nature as to permit of the insertion of a suitable headed member with the utmost convenience and speed of operation. 7 A t These objects and other advantageous ends I obtain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the hanger constituting my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectionon the line 8-3, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of the hanger.
In the above drawings 1 represents a hollow, somewhat elongated; metal structure, usually though not necessarily a casting, closed at the top and open at the bottom. Its top or upper end is formed with an external projecting flange 2 and there is a similar outwardly projecting flange 3 extending around its bottom end which preferably has a substantially circular outline and is formed with notches 5 for the reception of nails whereby it may be held in 5 place upon wooden forms.

While .two ofthe opposite interior walls of the hanger body 1 are plane and parallel, the two other interior walls are respectively provided with pockets 6 whose lower sides are inclined toward the open lower. end of said body. Adjacent said pockets the hanger body has outwardly extending portions 7 internally recessed as indicated at 8, and into each of these recesses extends an arm 9 having mounted on its outer end (in the present instance integrally) a cylindrical structure 10 whose length is substantially equal to the width of the main cavity of the hanger between its plane walls.
Each of the arms 9. is movably retained within its recess 8 by a pivot pin 11 which extends across the recess from side to side thereof, so that each of the cylindrical heads 10 is free to swing into and out of its pocket 6; the arrangement of parts being such that under normal conditions said two heads remain under the action of gravity in their lowest positions, resting againstithe oppositely inclined faces of the pocket walls and at a minimum distance apart.
lVhen under conditions of use the hanger is mounted in place in a ceiling or connected to a structure such as a girder with its open end downward, a headed structure such as the bolt w indicated in dotted lines, maybe entered in said end and forced upwardly within the hollow of said hanger. This causes the two heads '10 to swing apart about their pivot pins 11 as axes until they enter their pockets 6 and occupy positions such that the head of the bolt may pass between them. Thereupon both of said retaining members fall under the action of gravity into the positions indicated in Figs. 1 and 2,.so that when the bolt w is released, it is held within the hanger since its head is supported upon the two heads 10. Obviously there is no possibility of such a bolt being accidentally dislodged or pulled out of the hanger since the heads 10 cannot move apart sufficiently to permit this action unless they should first be manually raised and moved into their respective pockets.
With the construction illustrated there is no possibility of the swinging members constituted by the parts 910 becoming jammed or unintentionally held in their raised positions, nor is there anything which would cause them to be similarlyheld in their lower positions in such manner as to prevent the insertion of the headed structure 00 when this is desirable.
I claim v 1. The combination of a hollowbody having a bottom opening and an interior in clined bearing surface leading thereto; with an arm pivotally connected at one side ofthe body and having a transversely extending cylindrical head free to move toward and from the opening, said head being positioned to swing into engagement with the bearing surface when drawn toward the opening by a headed member extending therethrough.
2. The combination of a hollow body having a bottom opening and provided with pockets on opposite sides and bearing surfaces adjacent thereto; two headed elements pivotally connected to the body and free to swing into and out of their respective pockets to admit a headed structure, said ele-
