pal object of the present invention beingto provide an improved operating connection between the steam and pump pistons, as I will hereinafter describe and point out in the appended claims. n
In orderthat my linventiony may be better understood I will state that the constant resistance the piston or plunger of pumping engines meets with necessitates a constant pressure on the steam piston in case no flywheel is used or such other device, which accumulates power during the first part of the stroke and delivers it during the second part of the stroke, during which the steam eX ands.
Herts have already been made to enable the application of expansion of the steam in steam pumps operating without the aid of flywheel or any other like device. To this end namely the steam piston and the pump piston are connected by a Vsystem of rods, that in the beginning accelerates the motion of the steam piston and finally transmits it retardized on the pump piston.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication and in which like reference characters indicate like parts in the several views;

Referring to the drawing, a is the steam cylinder' and b the pump cylinder; c is the steam piston rod and d the pump piston rod, arranged in alinement butindependent of each other. The ends of the two piston rods are oppositely threaded and engage the sleeve c, which is tapped at its opposite ends to receive the oppositely threaded piston rods. The sleeve affords a rigid driving connection between the piston rods,l but is so operatively associated with the coperating guide c' that a flexible operation is attained.
To secure the operation just mentioned the sleeve e is provided with a pin f projecting outwardly and working in a slot in the guide z'. Thisslot is shaped in a predetermined manner to afford a complete circuit, and forthe sake of clarity I have here illustrated it as entirely cut through the wall of the guide, though it may of course be formed merely upon its inner face. illustrated wherein the slot is cut entirely In the form through the wall of the guide, two sleeves s are secured by welding or otherwise to the exterior ofthe guide on bothpsides ofthe slot, for the purposeof supporting that portion ofv theguide which the slot encircles. The valve forms no part of my invention in itself, and is not shown n detail, but isy operated bythe rod p connected'at one end of the roclr lever m and at its opposite end to the valve lever 1^.
v A steam cut-off valvey is operated by the rod a connected to the piston rod' of the coperating steam cylinder (not'shown), the pump being of the duplex type.
The operation of the present device is as follows When the steam piston is at the end of its return stroke the parts are in the position shown in the drawing. Upon the admission of steam behind the piston in the cylinder a the rod c moves to the right driving with it the sleeve e and consequently the pump piston cl. During this initial portion of the stroke the parts move in unison. As soon, however, as the pin f on the sleeve reaches the spiral portion of the groove g in the stationary guide e' the sleeve e is ro-k tated on the piston rods, thus drawing the two rods toward each other while they nevertheless travel in the same direction, but the steam piston at greater speed than the pump piston. The length of the rectilinear portion of the slot g is predetermined with relation to the operation of the steam valve so that the steam is cut off from the cylinder a substantially simultaneously with the entry of the pin f into the spiral portion of the slot. Thus, the initial travel of the pistons is secured under full head 'of steam, while the latter portion of the stroke at which they travel at reduced and varying speeds occurs during the expansion of the steam in the piston cylinder.
At the completion of the stroke the pin f on the sleeve e has reached the end of the spiral portion ot the slot g. The steam is now admitted to the opposite side of the piston in the cylinder c, and the piston is driven to the lett carrying the pin f on the sleeve c iirst through the rectilinear portion ot the slot /t and then through the spiral portion of the slot, thus returning the parts to the position shown in the figure. During the latter portion of the return stroke the rotation orn the sleeve c has the effect of retarding the return of the pump piston.
Various modifications in detail will readily occur to those skilled in the art which do not depart from what l claim as my invention.
l claiml. A steam pump comprising a steam cylinder, a pump cylinder, independent pistons and piston rods for the steain and pump cylinders respectively, the piston rods being arranged in alinement and oppositely threaded at their free ends, in combination with a sleeve adapted to receive said rod ends and serving to form an operative connection between the same, in combination with means associated with said sleeve for varying the strokes of said pistons relative threaded at their free ends, in combination with a sleeve adapted to receive said rod ends and serving to form an operative connection between the same, in combination with means associated with said sleeve for driving said pistons in unison during a por-v tion of their strokes and varying their travel during the remainder of their course.
3. A steam pump comprising a steam cylinder, a pump cylinder, independent pistons and piston rods for the steam and pump cylinders respectively, the piston rods being arranged in alinement and oppositely threaded at their freeends, in combination with a sleeve adapted to receive said rod ends and serving to form an operative connection between the same, in combination with means associated with the sleeve for causing the saine to rotate during the stroke ot the pistons.
4. A steam pump comprising a steamcylinder, a pump cylinder, independent pistons and piston rods for the steam and pump cylinders respectively, the piston rods being arranged in alinement and oppositely threaded at their free ends, in combination with a sleeve adapted to receive said rod ends and serving to form an operative connection between the same, in combination with means for causing the sleeveto rotate during, a portion of the stroke of said pis-Y nection between the same,rin combinationVV with a rigid member having a pin and slot connection with said sleeve causing the latter to rotate on the piston rod during a portion of the stroke.
