Be it known that we, HAROLD H. WHEELER and HERBERT J. NILsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Loraine, inthe county of Renville `and lState 'of'V North Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Grain-Doors; and we do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchV as willV enable .others skilled in the art to which itv appertainsto make and use the same; Y V p Our invention has for its object to yprovide an extremely simple and highlyeiiicient grain door for cars, and to this end,

A horizontal reinforcing bar 16 is secured to `the inner door section substantially at the vertical centerfthereof and has a length substantially equal to the width of vsaid door section so as to overlap the door posts 7 when said door section is closed. The end of the reinforcing bar` 16, which projects beyond' the oblique edge of the inner door section 12, has formed thereon a hook 17 arranged to interlock witha pinl or lockV lug 18 on one of the supplemental door posts 11 and thereby lhold said inner door section closed. On the top edgeof theouter as said doory section so i door vsection 13, is an inwardly projecting 'i track bar 19 which rests upon thetop edge of the inner door section 12. and slidably supports said outer door section thereon. By reference to Fig. 5, it will benoted that the top edge of the'inn'er door' section 12 is also bent slightly inward to afford a reinforcing iange. Formed on the top of the track bar 19 are lon itudinally spaced gear teeth 21, which mei with a pinion 22 journaled in one of the sheaths9. The pinion 22 may be ro-V tated to impart endwise sliding movement to i the outer door section 12 by means of a hand wheel 23 secured to the inner end of the shaft of said pinion. K In some instances, it v might be desirable to provide the shaft of the pinion with means for operating said pinion from the outside of the car body. To hold the outer VVdoor section 13 closed,

As the pressure of the grain is relieved from the door, the wheel 23'can be operated from time to time to increasethe sizeof the escape port 15, and
finally the outer door section may be moved into a complete open position. The oper` a'tor may thenget intothe car, if necessary, and open the inner door section 12 to complete the unloading of the car.
From the above description, it is evident that our improved grain door may be installed in a car: body without cutting or otherwise mutilating the same, and it does not, in any way, interfere with the customary outsi e doors, or the use of wooden doorsif it is desiredV to use the saine when loading-cars `with coal. or other bulk commodities. c c y A What we claim ist- Y 1. The combination with a car body having a side door opening, of a grain door for the y door opening comprising two sections mounted on opposite sides of the door opening for sliding movement into overlapping arrangement to close the door opening, the overlapping vertical edges of the door sections being in oblique relation to each other to produce therebetween a 'relief port Vwhen one vof the door sections is opened and which relief port progressively increases in size as said door section is opened.
` 2.*The combination with a car body havinga side door opening, of a grain door for the door opening comprising two sections mounted on opposite sides of the door opening for sliding movement into overlapping arrangement to close the door opening, the overlapping vertical edges of the door sections being beveled backwardly anddownwardly from ltheir top edges to produce therebetween a relief port when one of the door sections is opened and which relief port progressively increases in size as saidY door section is opened.

The combination with a car body having a side door opening, of a grain door forsthe door. opening comprising inner and outer sections mounted on opposite sides of the door opening for sliding movement into overlapping arrangement to close the door opening, the overlapping verticaledges of the door sections being in oblique relation to each other to produce therebetween a relief port when one of the door sections is opened and which relief port progressively increases in. size as said door section is opened, said inner door section being provided with a reinforcing bar of such length as'to overlap the car body at the door opening when said inner door section is closed, said outer door section having on its top edge a track bar mounted on the inner door section and slidably supporting said outer door section therefrom and lock the door sections together against lateal movement at their top edges( 8. The combination with a car body having a side door opening, of a grain door for the door opening comprising inner and outer sections mounted on opposite sides of the door opening for sliding movement into overlapping arrangement to close the door opening, the door sections being in oblique relation to each other to produce therebetween a relief port when one of the door sections is opened and which relief port progressively increases in size as said door section is ope-ned, said inner door section being provided with a reinforcing bar of such length as to overlap the car body at the door opening when sait inner door section is closed, said outer door section having on its top edge a toothequipped track bar mounted on the inner door section and slidably supporting said outer door section therefrom and lock the door sections together against lateral movement at their top edges, a pinion journaled on the car body and meshing with the teeth on the track bar, and means for operating the pinion to impart sliding' movement to the outer door section.

The combination with a car body having a side door'opening, of a sheath secured to the car body at each side of the door opening, a grain door for the door opening comprising two sections mounted in said sheaths for sliding movement into overlapping argangement to close the door opening, the overlapping vertical edges of the door sections being in oblique relation to each other to' produce therebetween a relief port when one ofthe door sections is opened and whichrelief port progressively increases in size as said door section is opened. 1i.
