To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. .HQLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new.
and Improved Screwdriver, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in screwdrivers, an object of'the invention being to provide improved means for connecting the tool with the handle.
A further object is to providewith a tool,
7 a tool holding. pin which also functions as a means for holding the toolreceiving nipple against rotary movement in the handle;
A further object is to provlde a screwdriver of extremely simple construction which willinsure a strong and rigid connection between the handle and the tool and which will permit the readyremoval of the tool notwithstanding the strain and stresses which may be put upon the same, and which will tend to. bind the tool in the handle.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

1 represents a cylindrical metal handle preferably having a milled or roughened surface and 2 and 3 represent metal nipples which are located in the ends of the handle and operate to receive the shanks 4 of tools 5. While I shall hereinafter refer to the tool 5 as a screwdriver, it is obvious that the structure may be utilized for supporting and operating other forms of tool and I do not wish to be limited to screwdriver tools, although it is the primary purpose of my device.

This shank 9 is curved in cross-section c0n stituting approximately half ofa cylinder with a flat inclined surface forming a wedge which, whenmoved intoposition againstthe end of the pin 7, exerts a wed-ging action to hold the shank-in the handle. The shank 4 of the tool 5 is of slightly smaller diameter than the main portion of v the tool so as to provide an annular shoulder 13, and the nipple 2 has a counterbore 10 at its outer end receiving the tool 5 and providing a shoulder 11 which limits the inward movement of the shoulder 13 These shoulders 13 and 11 prevent any possibility ofthe tool being forced into the handle sufficiently far to prevent removalv of the tool, and furthermore the counterbore 10 receiving the tool 5 gives a stronger bearing surface for the handle on the tool.
As above stated, the pin 7 is positioned in the nipple at an angle to the longitudinal axis thereof and by reason of such position the outer end at one side of the pinwill eX- tend beyond the outer surface of'the tubular projection 6 so that when the nipple is forced into the handle, the projected end of the pin operates as a key to cut its way into the inner surface of the handle as shown somewhat exaggerated by the reference numeral 12. The pin therefore not only operates as a holding means for the shank of. the tool, but also secures the nipple in the that the nipple may have this counterborcr or not, as desired. I claim:
1. 'A device of the character stated, comprising a handle, a tubular nipple in the handle, a pin located in the Wall of the nip pleand' positioned at an angle tothe longitudinal axis ofthe nipple, a tool, and a shank on the tool having an inclined face adapted to engage the inner end of the pin,
said pin at its outer end at one portion thereof projecting beyond the surface of the nipple and having locking engagement With the inner face of the handle.
