Application filed January 31, 1918. Serial No. 214,594.
To all wh0m it may 00mm.-
Be 1t known that I, JOSEPH F. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of'I-Iartford,
State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to new and useful generally the handle; I), the blade; 0, the
spring;and d, the blade pivot.
The handle is formed from sheet metal and when made in two parts, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each half of the handle is drawn up to shape so that the drawn up edges will butt along what becomes the me dian line of the handle when seen in edge view. These two parts are conveniently secured together at one end by the pivot pin (Z; at the other end by a pin 6. In order to give the effect of a full bolster at the blade end the full width of the handle may be carried out as indicated in Fig. 2; and to supply a proper bearingfor the blade, washers 5, 5, may be positioned insideof the handle at opposite sides of the blade tang.
The spring is ofthe novel form shown in the drawings and of a type which'does not require any drilling to receive a rivet for, holding it in place. I The outer end of'the spring is curved as at 9, to' be seated within the end of the handle and interlocked with the pin 6. It is shouldered at an interme-' Specification of Letters Patent.

tions and Without the necessity of an eX- 'penslve and delicate drilling and riveting operation such as is customary in the ordinary knives.
The two handle members may be assembled together and the spring introduced 7 I afterward by passing its curved end back of the rivet 6, after which the blade tang can be positioned and riveted intoplace. rivet 6, would prevent any tendency of the spring to shift toward the blade end of the handle, although there is small liability of any such movement. I
. Handle blank of Fig. 3 is designed to produce a one-piece handle, the flanges 15, being bent over to close the end of the handle and, when properly shaped and folded together, the complete either the spring or the blade is installed.
In accordance with the provision of the patent statutes I have described the princi- .ple of operation of my invention, together with the'apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the ap aratus shown is only illustrative, and tiiat the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim as my invention A knife comprising a handle of uniform thickness throughout substantially itsentire length, formed from a blank of sheet metal and having a back with a slot at its forward end, and cuppedsides the edges. at the rear ends of which are curved and abut to form a curved closed rear end on the handle; a pin adjacent the rear curved end of the handle for securing the sides thereof together; a
spring in the handle having a shoulder fit ting against the end of the slot in the back thereof, said spring having its rear end curved similarly to and seated in the curved end of said handle and interlocking with said pin; a blade having a tang positioned between the forward ends of the sides of the handle and bearing against the inner face of said spring; a solid, non-yieldable washer on each side of said tang and within the recesses of the cupped sides'of said handle, and a, pin extending through the sides of said handle, washers and tang for holding the parts in assembled position.
