IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-MOWERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,563, dated February 4, 1873.

" To all whom it may concern:

hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a de tail view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 4 is a detail section of my invention.

My invention has relation to lawn-mowers; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a reel to blow the cut grass from the cutters of the devices for communicating rotary motion to the reel and vibratory motion to the cutters, all substantially as hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the drawing, A'designates the frame of the machine, supported by the large roller B and the small rollers B, and having arranged at its forward end a set of spearshaped cutters, b, pivoted to the finger-bar and also to a reciprocating cutter-bar, I). O designates a rigid shaft upon which the roller B turns. In one end of said roller is a chamber to contain gearing, for the use hereinafter mentioned. The end of said chamber is closed by a shield, D, secured to the frame A, and designed to protect the gearing from the weather, dirt, grass, 860. An opening is made at a in said shield to allow the pinion E and wheel E to engage with each other. E? represents a toothed flange on theinner surface of the wheel B. E a pinion journaled to a plate, c, which plate is rigidly secured to the shaft 0. This pinion receives motion from the toothed flange E and actuates a toothed wheel, e loosely placed on the shalt O. The beveled wheel E has a collar on its back part which fits over the shaft and into an annular groove or step in the wheel e. The wheel E has also on its back part two dogs, 0 which catch on the teeth of the wheel 0 and cause the wheel E to receive motion from the latter. This motion is cpmmunicated to a horizontal shaft, F, by means of the pinion E. Upon the forward end of the latter is a pinion, G, engaging with another, G, on the end of the reel-shaft. The shaft F holds also an eccentric, H, which turns within the slotted part of an upright standard or arch, I, which is secured to the end of the cutter-bar. By means of said eccentric reciprocatin g motion is given to said cutter-bar and oscillating vibratory motion to the cutters. J represents the selfadjusting spring-handle, composed of two curved elastic rodls attached to a hand-bar, J, and braced by means of a block, K. At one end these bars are spread apart, and are provided with hooks k which fit into holes in the sides of the frame, and which are properly applied or removed by spreading the rods apart. The hooks k serve as pivots and allow the handle to be adjusted to any desired position. L designates a reel journaled to standards L and located above the back parts of the cutters, as shown. This reel is designed to blow away the fine grass, which after being cut tends to clog up the spaces through which the cutters play.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the shaft F, eccentric H, standard I, bar b, pivoted cutters b, gearin g G G, and reel L, substantially as specified.
