RIVETING-MACHINE AND THE ART OF RIVETING.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, FRED H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Riveting-Machines and the Art of Riveting, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has. relation to an improvement in riveting machines and the art of riveting and particularly to that type or class used in the manufacture of leather and similar goods.
The characteristic feature of my present invention is the provision broadly of means whereby after the rivet is inserted and during the riveting operation the end of the rivet is spun and cut off to hold the bur or washer to its work.
In the usual method of riveting harness or similar articles of leather or the like, the rivet after insertion is out to the proper length and the end is thereafter spread or mushroomed to confine the bur to the work. The spreading tool cooperates with an anvil to exert pressure axially upon the rivet. The end beyond the bur is irregular and rough and easily worn off to thereby release the. bur or washer from the rivet.
By my present invention the axial pressure upon the rivet is only sufficient to force the end of the rivet into a revolving shaping and cutting tool and the end of the rivet is shaped or rounded and cut off without disruption or strain axially of the rivet.
In carrying out my invention, the machine is provided with a rivet carrying member adapted to be operated when in simple form by a treadle mechanism to force the rivet through a perforation in the work and with a revolving spinning and cutting member, which operates preferably by power to shape the end of the rivet beyond the washer progressively to form a button or head andto cut off after the head is formed or during its formation the surplus at the end of the rivet not required in the spinning, button forming operation.
The machine is also preferably provided with a drill revolving within the spinning and cutting tool and arranged to be raised to and through the work before the rivet is inserted to drill the perforation in the work prior to the insertion of the rivet. The drill Specification of Letters Patent.

while revolving may be raised and lowered in the hollow spindle carrying the shaping and cutting tool, said spindle being at such times, stationary, and when lowered the drill may turn within the shaping. and cutting tool without interfering with the proper riveting operations.
The. nature and scope of. my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1- is a side elevational view of a riveting machine embodying the main features of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an overhangingarm in the free end of which the plunger 2 reciprocates. The arm 1 is supported above the bed'or table 3 which in turn is supported by the standard 4'. The reciprocation of the plunger issecured by means of'a lever 5' operated throughv adjustable link 6 by the foot treadle 7. When the treadle is depressed against the tension of the spring 8,.the lever 5 forcesthe plunger 2 downward to force the rivet 9 through the work and to assist in the riveting opera tion. To the lower end of the plunger 2 is slottedly connected the sleeve 10 carrying the rivet holding fingers 11. A spring 12 coiled around the plunger 2 serves to normally push the sleeve 10 downward to cover the lower end of the plunger (see Fig. When, however, the plunger 2 is moved downward still further than is necessary to enable the fingers 11 of sleeve 10 to perform theirfunction of guiding the rivet to the perforation in the work, the lower end of plungertraverses the sleeve and enters between fingers 11 to separate the same and thereby release the fingers from the rivet. The plate 13 is hollow or cup shaped, with an aperture '16 at its top to permit of the entrance of the lower end of a rivet after said rivet has penetrated the work sup ported on the plate 13. The hollow interior'of the plate 13 is sub stantially conical and at the base of .the hollow the plate 13 is provided with ball bearings'17. In the bed or table 3 is' arranged to revolve a spindle 18 preferably hollow, the spindle 18 having a ball bearing support 19 at its lower end inan extension or bracket 20 of the standard 4. V The upper end of spindle 18.is shaped or formed with a recess or recesses 21 designed to receive and interlock with the bases 22 of a divided shaping or spinning and cutting tool 23." This tool usually made in two sections or jaws projects beyond thetable 3 and enters the ball bearing 17 in plate 13.
The lower parts of the sections are support ed in a ball bearing 24 in the table.
The upper portion of the sections are converging being formed complemental to the hollow conical interior of the plate '13 and when plate 13 is depressed the plate rides over the upper ends of the sections of the spinning tool 23 to bring those sections together. I
The extreme upper edges of the sections of tool 23 are formed with a knife like cutting flange 24: so that as the sections are brought together, the tool not only spins the projecting end of a rivet but gradually severs all the surplus portion of said rivet.
The spindle l8 and the tool 23 are set into rotation usually through a belt (not shown) placed around the pulley 25 on the lower end of the spindle.
Where the work is to be perforated before the rivet is inserted it is desirable and preferable to arrange the drill 26rwithin the hollow spindle and to rotate it with the spindle 18. The stem 28 or the drill may be raised or lowered, while the drill is rotating within the spindle 18 by any suitable mechanism. A simple and therefore 28 of the drill 26-is pin'ned or keyed to a collar 29 slottedly connected with the spindle 18. The collar 29 may be raised or lowered by a clutch lever 30, thecollar 29 turning loosely inthe clutch 31 of lever 30.
The drill 26 may thus'be raised to penetrate the workand then lowered to inoperative position below the nipping ends of the rivet 9 is then inserted in the fingers 11 of preferred means is illustrated in Figs. 1 and plunger'2 and the plunger 2. is then depressed by the treadle mechanism. The lower end of the plunger 2'first' forces the fingers 11 outwardly .to release the rivet and then bears against the head of the rivetto force said rivet through the work and the bur. The plunger still descending next forces the work and the plate 13 downward, the end of the rivet which projects below the bur being thus forced upon the shaping tool 23. This tool revolving spins the advancing end of the rivet into a button and as the plate 13 descends, the jaws of the tool 23 are brought together while the tool is spinning and the excess of the rivet is cut ofl. Thetreadle mechanism is then released, the work and plate 13 are elevated by spring 15 above the bed and above the spinning tool 23, and the riveted workis removed for replacement by other burs and work in further riveting operations.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a riveting machine, a rivet carrying member, a resilient work support below said member, and a sectional spinning tool arranged below the work support; combined with means for forcing the rivet carrying member toward the spinning tool to thereby depress-the work support upon said tool and cause the sections of the tool to closeand shear the spun portion of the rivet.
2. In a riveting machine, a combined spinning and cutting tool consistin of a rivet carry ng member, a rotary'spindle, and sec 'member, and a sectional spinning tool arranged. below the work support, combined with means tor forcing the rivet carrying member toward the spinning tool to thereby depress the work support upon said tool and cause the sections of the tool to close and shear the spun portion of the rivet, in combination with a drill revolving within the spinning tool and means for raising and lowering said drill with respect to said tool.
4. In a riveting machine, a rivet carrying member and a spinning tool cooperating therewith, combined with a bur supporting member under spring tension, means for forcing the rivet carrying member and rivet toward the bur supporting member and tool and means for revolving said tool against In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
