Be it known that I, FAY M. HAYNEs, a
citizen of the United States, andresident' of Encampment, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented certain liable to work loose, hence causing what is called a fishing ob, which is very labor1- ous, and often delays the drilling operation for a considerable length of time. This type of safety joints-is formed with ahead and socket, which are adapted to be engaged and partially rotated to cooperatively lock, and also is provided with additional locking means, which is insertible when the first mentioned locking-meansis in operation. Another object of the invention is toprovide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation. v i \Vith these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification-and claim. c

In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The safety lock joint includes broadly a head member 1, and a socket member 2, which are adapted to be cooperatively engaged and interlocked in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described. The head member 1' is provided at its outer end with an internallythreaded cone shaped socket 3, while the outerend of the socket member K has a projecting cone shaped externallythreaded portion 4:, such parts being of the conventional type for connection in'a drill ing mechanism, as is readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

The socket member 2 has formed therein I aninner chamber 12 and-this chamber ad'- 'jacent to its open end has provided on dia- V metrically opposite sides inwardly project- ;ing rib portions 13 which are longitudinally grooved as at 14 for accommodating the rod 7. The rib portions 13 are approximately the 1 length of the filler strips 10, the latter being adapted to engage with said rib portions 13' to fill the space between them and to come flush with theinner ends thereof when the rod 7 is inserted in'the socket member and turned therein.

The double locking operation, will absolutelyprevent the drill- 7 ing bit from working loose and hence causing the consequential loss in time and labor.
To disconnect this joint, it is only necessary to remove the locking sleeve- 18, disengage the pin l'Z, and rotate the head and socket members back to the first mentioned 7 position, whereby the projectlng rod 7 may be easily withdrawn through the restr1cted passage inthe outer end ofthe chamber 12,
