SILT-ACCUMULATING MEANS FOR WATER-CURRENTS.
the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in means for deflecting water currents of silt bearing streams to form silt-beds, useful to prevent washing of the banks, and to be employed in forming land areas in the beds of rivers or harbors where silt is carried by tide waters.
The object of the invention is to provide fascines which may be conveniently constructed and will operate to great advantage in deflecting water mentioned.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the fascines. Fig. 2 is aVieW of the same in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view of connected fascines arranged for the protection of the bank of a stream. Referring nowfto the'drawing, the herein currents for the purposes described siltaccu'mulating means consist of a pluralityof fascines 2- disposed end-to-end and connected by cables or strands 3, and secured to the bank or shore by a cable-or pair of cables a, the fascines being similar with respect to each other and of such con struction that they will deflect moving water to advantage. Each fascine is made by use of a pair of sections 5 and 6, and cross-strips 7. bection 5 consists of a pair of parallel, adjacentlydisposed strips 8 and a pair of parallel, adj acently-disposed strips 9 disposed at right angles to the strips 8 and connected therewith by any suitable means at their intersecting parts, the means herein shown being thongs 10. Section 6 consists of a' pair of parallel,.adjacently-disposed strips 11 and a pair of parallel, adjacently-disposed strips 12 disposed at right-angles to the strips 11 and having their intersecting parts connect ed by thongs 13.

In order that the water will be deflected to advantage for the rapid formation of silt beds, strands 16 are employed for connecting the strips, said strands 16 being secured to the strips near the ends thereof, and it will be seen that, by use of the strands 16, the adjacent ends of strips 8 of section 5 are connected with the adjacent ends of strips 11 of section 6, these connections being near, but somewhat inwardly from the ends of said zstrips; alsothe ends of the strips 7 which are adjacent to each other, are connected by strands 16; also it will be noted that, by use ofstrands 16, the ends of the strips of sections 5, which are disposed at right angles to each other, are connected with each other and also with the ends of the strips 7 j On account-of the construction described, the fascines, in side elevation and plan, present the same appearance, the result being that, their operation for deflecting a water current to form silt beds will be the samewhen supported upon either end or upon either side, and since the ends of the strips project somewhat beyond their connections with the strands 16, these end-portions will engage the ground at the bottom of a stream to advantage to prevent skidding or displacements.
In the use of the herein described silt accumulating means, the fascines are connected with each other, approximately at their middle, and by use of a stationary cable, may be maintained in a moving current parallel therewith and near the shore,
. as shown in Fig. 3, the result being that silt will be deposited and erosion of the bank of a stream may be prevented; and as shown in Fig. 4:, the fascines when connected, may
, be maintained transversely of a water current by stationary cables &, to form silt-beds.
In some instances the strands- 16 may be omitted, and also the strands '14 may be dispensed with in other instances, depending upon the more or less rapid movement of water; also a single fascine 'may be used or a plurality of connected fascines may be em loyed', according to requirements.
t will be understood that any suitablematerial may be used. Since the fascines should ordinarily be.disposed upon the bottom of a stream, some of t e material should be metal.
-However I do not wish to limit myself to material to be used, nor to form, size, proportion of parts nor minor details, except so I far as defined in or determined by the apengaged relation at right-angles with reference to'each other, cross-strips engaging the strips of each section at their parts of intersection, thong's securing the cross-strips to the pairs of strips of each section at the intersecting parts thereof, connected crossstrands extending diagonally between and connected with the strips of the sections and also connected with the cross-strips, and strands outwardly of the intersecting parts of said strips, said last named strands connecting the ends of the cross-strips with each other and connecting strips of the pair of sections and also connecting the ends of the strips'of. said sections with the ends of the cross-strips.
