To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEoncE MARK OMEGA JENKINS, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Telephone Sets, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.

This invention relates to a portable telephone set and more particularly to a set of this character which is self-contained and easy of access.

It is an object of the invention to provide a telephone set which is very compact and which can be transported to and used in locations where space is at a premium, such for instance as are encountered in military operations. It is also an object of the invention to provide a set especially adapted for military use in trenches or dugouts.

In order to attain these objects in accordance with a feature of the invention, a telephone, signal device and battery are mounted in a receptacle divided: into compartments. One of these compartments is pro vided with means for holding a hand telephone therein in such a manner that it can be readily removed for use.

In accordance with another feature of the invention, a two-part cover is provided for said receptacle, which cover may be removed as whole without the use of tools and which, because of a hinge joint between its two parts, can be manipulated to uncover either compartment of the receptacle without uncoverin the other. The two parts of the cover are independently secured to the receptacle by clasps which can be readily manipulated with gloved hands, and additional securing means, in the form of straps and buckles are provided to secure one part of the cover to the receptacle.

These and other features of the invention will more clearly appear from the following specifications and the annexed drawings in which: 1

The telephone set illustrated in the drawing embodying the invention consists in general ofthe receptacle 1, divided into two compartments 2- and 3 by a longitudinal partition l. The compartment 2 is divided into sub-compartments by means of the cross partitions 5 and 6. Mounted between the cross partitions 5 and 6 is a terminal board 7 which carries the binding screws 8 which serve to secure and electrically connect conductors leading from the various pieces of apparatus forming the set. In the lower part of the compartment 2 are mounted a plurality of cells of primary battery 9 and in the upper portion is a signal bell 10 with its actuating magnet (not shown). This bell and magnet are carried by the bracket 11, which is secured by means of screws to the partition 4. The compartment 3 is partly closed at its upper end by a transverse cover plate 12. This plate is secured to the partition "l, the outer side wall 13 and upper wall 14 of the case. This cover plate forms a pocket in which is adapted to be inserted the receiver end of a hand telephone 15, which includes a receiver 16 and a transmitter 17 mounted on the opposite ends of a handle. on that part of the handle portion adjacent the receiver, and on the opposite side from the receiver, there is provided a projection indicated at 18, which projection is adapted to pass under the edge of the cover plate 12 and to spring into a hole or aperture 19 in such cover provided for the purpose of holding the hand telephone in place. In order to protect the telephonic apparatus during transportation and when the set has been mounted for use, there is provided a cover 20 for said receptacle. This cover is made in two portions, 21 and 22, which are hinged together by means of a flexible strap 23. The cover is adapted to be placed on the receptacle in such a manner that the left-hand portion of 21 is disposed over the compartment 3 and the right-hand portion over the compartment 2. In order to hold the cover in place there is provided on both longitudinal edges of the cover, one member of a two-part clasp 24, the other member of which is mounted on the corresponding longitudinal side wall of the receptacle. In addition to these clasps there are provided on the part 22 of the cover,

straps which are secured to the top and bottom edges of the cover and cooperate with buckles 26, secured to the top and bottom sides of the receptacles. in order to permit the set to be conveniently mounted for use, there is provided a pair of straps aperture 29 disposed immediately over the bell 10 so that the bell may be heard while the cover isin place.

While in use, and while being transported to the place of use, the cover issecured to the receptacle by means, of the four clasps 24 and the straps 25. This operation does not require the use of any tools andmay be easily accomplished without the removal of gloves or mittens from the hands of, the user- Because of the strap which secures the other portion 22 of the cover in place, the portion 21. canbe swung about the hinge piece 23 without in any way disturbing the portion 22. Under ordinary I circumstances it will not be necessary 1n use to remove the cover portion 22 except at long intervals. However, if it becomes necessary to remove such portion of the cover, this may easily be done without the. use of any tools by opening the clasps and unfastening the straps. i

A portable telephone set comprising a receptacle divided into two compartments by a longitudinal partition, means secured to said partition for supporting a signaling device in one of said compartments, a plate extending betw en said partition and the opposite side wall of the other compartment forming a pocket therein for the reception of a. hand telephone, and means cooperating with said-plate for holding the telephone in position.
