Application filed October 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODOR O. ARPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Shovel Excavator and Operating Means Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved dredging shovel excavator and means for operating the same, particularly adapted for use in connection with machinesfor dredging gold and similar minerals, but may be constructed for other dredging.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a lifting boom, and a dredging shovel or scoop, the handle of which is pivotally and slidably mounted on the boom, whereby, as the boom is raised and the shovel or scoop drawn toward the apparatus, said scoop or shovel may be positioned so that its contents may be deposited or dumped into a trough.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a suitable turn table especially adapted for carrying the lifting boom and the operating means therefor,

By means of the headed pins 24, said plates 22 are pivoted on the bearings or brackets 19, thereby pivotally mounting the lifting boom. A head block 25 is provided for the outer end of the boom, the outer end portions of the bars or rods 20 and 21 are bolted or secured, as at 26, to said block. Secured to the outer edges or faces of the bars 20 and 21, as at 27, substantially midway the ends of the boom, are the plates 28. A swiveled plate, block or member 29 has its laterally extending pins 30 mounted in bearings of said plates 28. This block or plate 29 has an opening 31 provided with six faces or sides 32 and 33. The faces 33 are recessed, to receive the rollers 33, and their babbitt bearings 34, which receive the These recesses 33 open also toward the upper face of the block or plate 29, whereby said rollers and their bearings may drop into place. Suitable bolts or screws 33 are threaded through the block or plate 29 in their arrangement, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whereby the inner ends of said screws or bolts may extend slightly into the babbitt bearings and hold them and their rollers in place. A scoop or shovel of an improved type is provided and projecting from the shovelor scoop '35 is a beam or arm 36. This beam or arm in cross section is hexagon shape, in other words it is provided with six faces, and wear plates 34 angular in cross section are secured by screws 34 to the arm or'beam, are fastened to adjacent faces of the arm or beam, in order to be engaged by the antifrictional rollers 33, as the 'arm or beam moves through the block or plate. It is to be observed that owing to the pivotal mounting of the block or plate 29, the scoop or shovel is capable of pivoting relative to in any suitable manner.

. The scoop or shovel 35 comprises a sheet metal casing consisting of a top 39 and bottom 40, and the two ends 41. Each end has an end plate 43 connecting the top and bottom pieces of scoop casing. The end plates of thescoop are secured and reinforced to the top and bottom pieces and the strips by means of the frame 44, which is constructed angular in cross section. The frames 44 have transverse bars 45 to which the end plates 43 are secured at 46, said bars 45 having pintles 47, to which the ends of the arms of the bails 51 and 52 are connected pivotally. The scoop has its front and backopen, and the open back is normally closed by the closure 48, which has ears.49. These ears are pivoted at 50 to the lugs 50, and by means of the sliding spring tensioned bolt or latch 50 (the spring of which is not shown), the closure is held secure when closed. The beam or arm 36 is rigidly secured to the top of the scoop The bot-tom of the scoop has an extended portion 53 provided with a cutting edge 54", whereby the forward portion of the bottom of the scoop will cut into the material to be dredged. The bails 51 and 52 have eyes 53 and 54 and to the eye 54 a cable 55 is connected. This cable 55 passes over a suitable pulley 56, which is carried by the block at the end of the boom. This cable 55 passes backwardly toward the portable structure of the apparatus, and is connected to any suitable hoisting engine, whereby the cable 55 may be drawn in or let out, for manipulating the shovel or scoop toward the portable structure of the apparatus or outwardly toward the end of the boom. Connected to the eye 53 of the bail 51 is a cable 60, which passes over the pulley 61, and is in turn connected to an engine on the platform 1 which engine imparts movement to the cable 60 in either direction. It is to be noted that by manipulating the cables 55 and 60 the shovel or scoop may be moved toward and from the portable structure or frame of the dredging apparatus. The outer faces of the bars or rods 20 and 21 are braced by the zigzag braces 64. The upper face of the block or head of the lifting boom has an eye to which the cable 66 is connected. This cable, in turn, passes over the pulley 67, and has its other end portion connected to an engine on the platform 1, by means of which engine the cable may be controlledv and the boom raised or lowered as desired.
In dredging gold or other minerals, the material is scooped or shoveled from its bed by the manipulation of the scoop, and then the scoop is' operated so that it may be positioned over the upper. end of the chute 79, after which the closure 48 is unlatched, and the material allowed to pass'down the chute, where it is gathered, and conveyed upwardly by any suitable means (not shown) and allowed to dump into the separating drum 75.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a revolving base, of a skele: ton boom, pivotally mounted thereon, bearing plates secured to the sides of said boom between its ends, a hexagonal shaped guide block having laterally extending axially alined trunnions rockably mounted in said bearing plates, said guide block having a central correspondingly shaped opening provided with anti-frictional roller bearings, an excavating shovel, a stick secured thereto, correspondingly shaped in cross section to and guided through'said opening on said roller bearings, means connected to the shovel for operating the same forwardly and rearwardly, the stick sliding movably through the opening and the block rocking at the same time in its bearing.

In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a revolving base, of a skeleton boom pivotally mounted thereon, bearing plates secured to the side of said boom between its ends, a guide block having laterally. extended axially alined trunnions rockably mounted in said bearing plates, said guide block having a hexagonally shaped opening, antifrictional roller bearings within said hexagonal shaped opening, one roller being so mounted in each of the walls of adjacent walls of the opening so as to form said adjacent walls, an excavating shovel, a stick secured thereto, said stick being correspondingly shapedto and guided through said opening on said roller bearings, means connected to the shovel for operating the same forwardly and rearwardly, the stick sliding movably through the opening and the block rocking at the same time in its bearing.

In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a revolving base, of a skeleton boom pivotally mounted thereon, bearing plates secured to the sides of said boom between its ends, a guide block having laterally extending axially alined trunnions rockably mounted in said bearing plates, said block havinga hexagonally shaped opening, a roller bearing pivotally mounted in the walls of the ends of the opening, a stick having an excavating shovel thereon, said stick being hexagonally shaped and disposed within the hexagonal shaped opening of the block, said stick being narrower in width than the openin of the block, the forward and rear sides 0. said stick being in slidable engagement with the rollers in the end walls of the hexagonally shaped openin said stick being said openlng on said rollers, means connected to the shovel for operating the same forwardly and rearwardly, the stick sliding movably through the opening and the block rocking at the same time in its bearing.
