Description

R. POWERS.
Gotten-Presses; N0, 135,486, Patqnted Feb.4,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT POWERS, OF CHARLESTON, MISSISSIPPI.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,486, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Pownns, of Charleston, in the county of Tallahatchee and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Press, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of the hereinafterdescribed arrangement of apparatus for working the screw of a screw cotton-press, both for pressing the cotton and withdrawing thefollower.
Figure 1 is partly a side elevation and'partly a sectional elevation of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig.3 is a transverse sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
A is the follower; B, the screw for working it. C is a large revolving nut, through the center of which the screw works, the said nut being confined between the cross-bars D in the top of the vertical press-frame E, so as to rise and fall by the turning of the nut, which is effected by a belt worked by a small pulley, G, on a counter-shaft, H, one end of which runs against the end of another shaft, I, which may be the ordinary band-wheel shaft of a horse-power for driving a cotton-gin, and is to be provided with a clutch of any approved kind by which it can be readily connected to said shaft to be turned by it, or disconnected; and the two shafts have each a bevel-pinion, K, near the ends, facing each other, with which there is another pinion, L, arranged in such manner on an adjustable support, M, that it may be readily brought into gear with them, when the aforesaid clutch is disconnected, to reverse the motion of the nut O, and raise the follower, after it has been forced down to press the bale, by the direct action of the drivingshaft I on the counter-shaft, through the medium of the aforesaid clutches.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--' The combination, with the revolving nut O and press-screw B, of the counter-shaft H, driving-shaft I, pinions K, and the adjustable pinion L, substantially as specified.
ROBERT POWERS.
