Description

L. BLAIR.
Gas Betort Scrapers.
NCL-135,397. i ParentedFeb.4,1873.
. AM. PHoro-LnHos/Mmlcca MX(0saoRNE.'s mocess) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LA FAYETTE BLAIR, OF PAINESVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-RETORT SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,397, dated February 4, 1873.
^ in Scrapers for Gas-Betorts, of which the following is a specification N atar@ and Objects of the Invention.
This invention relates to the combination of the sectional springscrapers with the slotted plate C, for the purpose of removing the carbon which forms on the inside of the retort. It has been proved by experiment that if the layer of carbon is removed by scraping at each charge of the retort it prevents the carbon from forming in any thickness, as is the case where the retorts are charged in the usual manner, said carbon forming in successive layers, sometimes to a thickness of two inches. The spring sections are secured to the slotted plate in any convenient manner. The use ot' the slotted plate is to form a support for the attachment of the springs. The addition of the slide-guides D is for the purpose of steadying the plate. The said plate has attached to it the coal-distributer, already allowed to the said BLAIR by patent dated May 28, 1872, for an improvement in gas-retorts.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the retort A and shows the action of the sectional spring-Scrapers B; Fig. 2, view of the slotted plate C with the sectional spring-scrapers attached, also it shows the slide-'guides l); Fig. 3, vertical section of the same.
General Description.
O is a plate made to conform to the interior form of the retort A. Said plate has the sectional spring-scrapers B attached to it in any yconvenient manner, said springs conforming to the form ot' the plate.
The plan of forming the springs in sections is to compensate for any inequalities in the interior ot' the retort and to make them more elastic.
The slide-guides D, which are attached to the lower edge of the slotted plate C, serve as a guide when the plate is worked in or out by the rod E.
Wvhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sectional spring Scrapers B, said Scrapers conforming to the form of the plate C, substantially as and for the purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the spring-Scrapers B, plate O, and the slide-guides D, substantially as and for the 'purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
