Around the outer part ofthe periphery of the body, is arranged a band 28 preferably of wire which is seated in an annular groove 24 in' the body for confining this band in place on the body. The opposite endsof the retaining .memberC are connected with diametrically opposite sides of the band in such manner that these parts may bedetached to permit of removing'` the spring Y from the body .and replacing the same by 1 j oneof greater orv less strength and thus permit of adapting the resistance of the valve to the pressure it is desired'to maintain vin the barrel. When a bung of his construction-is-ap# plied to the barrel the pressure willv be held therein until the tension of the spring is ex` ceeded and then the valve will beopenedvautomatically and permit the excess 'pressure to escape, thus preventing the barrely from bursting. When pressure in the barrel has been again reduced to normal the valve is vclosed automatically by the spring without permitting any external air to enter the barrel, which otherwise might impair the con- 7 tents of the barrel, but instead preserving the same in a pure condition.
A device of this character enables the contents of the barrel to developk naturally and in the best condition without liability of losing the saine or impairing its qualities as would be liable to occur if no safety means were provided to relieve any eXcess pressure on the barrel. Y
I claim as my invention:
l. A safety bung comprising a body adapted to be placed in a bung hole and provided with a longitudinal passage the inner part of which is narrow Vand the outer part wider forming an outwardly facing valve seat between the narrow and wide parts of said passage, a longitudinally movable valve arranged in the outer wide part of said passage and engaging said seat, a spring arranged on the wide part oi' said passage and engaging its inner end wi-th said valve, a follower vengaging with the'outer end of said spring, aV retaining member arranged transversely on the `outer end of said body and .engaging said follower, and a band secured around the outer end of .the periphery of said body and connected yon diamotrically opposite sides with opposite ends of said retaining member.
