Be it known that I, LUIGI VIEZZI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West New York in the county of Hudson and State of hew Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Scriber, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved scriber for use on squares and similar drafting tools such as are gener-' ally used by carpenters and other persons and-arranged to enable the user to accurately set the scriber for conveniently drawing a desired line over the surface of the work.

Another object is to permit of conveniently and quickly attaching the scriber to one of the legs of the square or to remove it therefrom when not needed for scribing purposes.

Another object is to permit the use of a pencil or a steel pin as the scribing tool.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the scriber as applied to a carpenters square and with the parts in position for making a line on the surface of the work;

Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of a portion of the improved scriber.

The body 10 of the scriber is in the form of a rectangular block and is provided at V the sides with notches or guideways 11 in which fit slidingly lugs 12 rising from the sides of a clamping plate 13 provided with a clamping bolt 14 extending through the body 10 to the top thereof. On the upper end of the bolt 14 screws a wing nut 15 to permit of moving the clamping plate 13 in clamping engagement with the under side of one of the legs of a carpenters square, straight edge or similar drafting implement 16 with a view to clamp the said leg between the clamping plate 13 and the front end of the Specification of Letters Patent. The top of the clamping plate 13 is preferably provided at the sides with ridges or ribs 17 adapted to engage the under surface of the leg of the drafting implement 16 to insure a good hold on the said leg. It is understood that the lugs'12 guide the clamping plate 13 in its up and down movement on clamping the scriber in place on the drafting implement.

i The body 10 is provided at its front end with a forwardly extending pointer 20 adapted to indicate on the graduation 21 representing linear measurement and formed on the outer edge of the leg of the implement 16 on which the scriber is used at the time. The point of the pointer 20 is in transverse alinement with a scriber pin 25 removably l mounted in an aperture 26 formed in the body 10v near the rear edge thereof, and the said scriber pin 25 is fastened in place by a suitable set screw 27 screwing into a threaded boss 28 forming a rearward extension of the body 10. Instead of using a steel scriber pin 25 use may be made of an ordinary lead pencil inserted in a hole 31 formed in the body 10 and intersecting the aperture 26 (see Fig. 4), the center of the hole 31 being in transverse alinement with the point of the pointer 20 and the center of the scriber pin 26. The pencil is adapted to be fastened in position by the set screw 27. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described, the scriber can be readily moved along'the leg of the implement 16 until the pointer 20 indicates on the graduation 21 the desired distance the line is to be drawn from'one edge of the work and afterthe scriber has been adjusted it is clamped in'place by the operator screwing up the wing nut 15. It is understood that as the point of the pointer 20 and that of the scriber pin 26 or the lead pencil are in transverse alinement, the in scribed line is the same distance from the edge of the work as the pointer 20 is from the corner of the implement 16 less the width of the adjacent leg of the implement 16, the distance being indicated by the graduation 21 on .the other leg of the implement 16.

One side of the scriber body lO is pro vided at the rear end with a storage compartment 40 adapted to contain a number of scriber pins 41, and this storage compart ment 40 is normally closed by a screw plug &2. It is understood that the extra scribe! pins 41 are intended for use in the aperture 26.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A scriber for attachment to a straight edge, square or similar drafting implement, comprising a body, a clamping iember adapted to coact With under side of the body to clamp the scriber in place on the implement, the said clamping member having guide ns slidingly engaging the said body, the guide arms forming an abutment for the edge of the implement, a clamping bolt en ging the said body and the clampingme her to draw the clamping member toward the body, a pointer on the said body and adapted to indicate on the linear graduation or the implement, and a scriber point held on the said body in the same plane With .the point of the said pointer.

2. A scriber for attachment to a straight edge, square or similar drafting implement, comprising a body, a clamping member adapted to coact With the under side of the body to clamp the scriber in place on the implement, the said clamping member having guide arms slidingly erigaging the said body, the guide arms forming an abutment for the edge of the implement, a clam ing bolt engaging the said body and the clamping member to draw the clamping member toward the body, a pointer on the said body and adapted to indicate on the linear uation of the implement, the said body ha:- ing two apertures of oifierent diameters, one of the apertur s being adapted to receive a scriber pin and the other being adapted to receive lead pencil for use as a scriber, apertures being in the same plane with the pol it of the l said pointer, and a "histenii scr w screwing 1n the 52nd body and adapted to fasten either the said pm or pencil in place.
