mllliiiii WWWGW UNITED? STA V if Application filed July 23,
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at St; Louis, Missouri, have invented the new and useful Improvement in Measuring and Cutting Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to measuring and cutting mechanism, and more particularly to measuringand cutting, mechanism for table oil cloth. This application is a con tinuation in part of application Serial Nuin ber 833,934, filed April 23, 1914..
Table oil cloth is supplied in rolls and is often sixty inches wide; the rolls are, therefore, as much as sixty inches in length. Such oil cloth is comparatively thin and has no stiffness, so that it is rather inconvenient to handle. Such oil cloth has, moreover, a pattern on one side, and this pattern is on the inside when rolled up; but when displayed, the pattern should be on the outside.
One of the objects of this invention, therefore, is to provide mechanism for accurately. dispensing, measuring and cutting oil cloth, constructed so that the oil cloth can be measured directly from the rolls, and accurately measured and cut square across. Another object is to provide mechanism for rewinding the oil cloth, so as to place the pattern on the outside.
Further objects will appear from the detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination display and dispensing device embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail taken in the direction of the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Flg. 1; Fig. 4 is. a detail of Fig. 3, showing the measuring device;
Fig. 5 is a detail of one end of the carrier, showing the latching device;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on the line 66, Figs. 1 and 2; and,
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the windin roll.
Tteferring to the accompanying drawing, 10 designates a base supporting a rotary carrier 11, which rotary carrier is adapted to detachably support rolls of oil cloth 12, at the top and bottom. Clamps 13 are provided for clamping the rolls intermediate their ends, and hold the oil cloth in'rolled f MEasUnme AND CUTTING MECHANISM. V I

up'condition; The carrier is also provided 1E5? PATENT) em? JOHN L. MUELLER, or sit, LouIs,.1vrI ssoU1tIQ with a removable'to'p 14, for covering the ends of the rolls. This; display stand is fully shown and described in my patent Number 1,144,229, patented June 22,1915. 1
-'The base 10 has secured'thereto, a later-j ally extending'bracket 15, provided with a foot 16 for supporting a sta'ndard17i This standard has mounted thereon, a bracket 19, which forms a bearing for ashaft 20 of the dispensingcarrier, as hereinafter- 'de-' scribed.
The dispensing carrier comprises a pair of end plates 35 connected by cross bars 36 and 37', in any suitable manner. The cross bar36 has secured thereto, the shaft 20,
heretofore described aspivoted in the bearing bracket 19. Connecting the bars 36 and 37, is a formed sheet metal plate 40, which forms a pocket for receiving the roll 12 of oilcloth. Aroll 42 is provided with pintle's one 44 entering ahole in one plate 35, and
Y the other 45'being engaged by andjlocked in position by a latch 47, pivoted on-the other plate 35. This roll is provided with I a crank 48;
Pivoted on the'crossbar 36 is arm '55,
which supports; the measuring mechanism, this mechanism comprislng-a case 60, carry-- mg a dlal' 63, graduated in yards or any other suitable denomination, and carrying also a' wheel 66, engaging the upper surface of'the pipe 'or guide 37. ';This wheel has a shaft geared to'the shaft of the pointer 68, by a worm and wheel connectiomso that rotation of the wheel 66, will :rotate'the" pointer 68. The shaft of this pointer is frictionally connected with the worm wheel,
and a kn'urle'd head 67 is provided which is fixed to this pointer shaft, so as to permit'setting ofthe pointer by the hand. The
that when this arm is swung, back, this tail piece will engagethe cross bar 36, and limit:
the movement of the arm and the measuring devices attached thereto. p I,
' The cross bar36 is provided with an; arm
22, the extremity. of which moves over a quadrant 23, .attachedtothe standard 17.
This arm carries a boss 24, which is formed hollow and is provided with, a plunger 25, 1 engaged bya spring 26, and adapted to en-;
the goods from the roll, a support fixed inthe carrier between said rolls constructed and positioned to form a bend in the goods as they pass thereover, said support having a cutting slot extending therealong and atthebend formed in the goods, and a measuring-device engaging the goods at a point coincident with said slot as the goods pass over said support.
5. In a device of the class described, a dispensing carrier constructed to support a roll of goods and permit the goods to be unrolled therefrom, a fixed support over which the goods pass, constructed and positioned to form a pronounced bend in the goods, said; support having a cuttlng slot extending therealong and at the bend formed in the goods, and a measuring device on said carrier movable to position over the roll to engage the goods at a point coincident with said slot as the goods pass over said support.
6. In a device of the class described, a dispensing carrier constructed and arranged to removably support a roll of goods and permit the goods to be unrolled therefrom, measuring means mounted on said carrier and adapted to engage the goods when said carrier is in horizontal position, and means for pivotally supporting said carrier for movement from vertical to horizontal posi-,
tions, adapted to permit said carrier when in horizontal position to receive the roll of goods.
7. In a device of the class described, a dispensing carrier constructed and arranged to removably support a roll of goods and permit the goods to be unrolled therefrom, measuring means on said carrier, means for pivotally supporting said carrier for move ment from vertical to horizontal positions, adapted to permit said carrier when in horizontal position to receive the roll of goods, and means for latching said carrier.
8. In a device of the class described, a dispensing carrier constructed and arranged to removably support a roll of goods and permit the goods to be unrolled therefrom, measuring means on said carrier, means for pivotally supporting said carrier, constructed to permit itto move to operative and inoperative positions, adapted to permit said carrier when in operative position to receive a roll of goods, and means for latching said carrier in either of said positions.
9. In a device of the class described, a dispensing carrier comprising a skeleton frame having a plurality of bars adapted to form a longitudinal roll receiving recess, dispensing means on said carrier, and means for pivotally supporting said carrier, constructed to permit it to move to operative'and inoperative positions and adapted to f permit said carrier when in operative position to receive a roll of goods.
