EMULSIFYING-MACHIINE.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Sept. 21; 1920.
. Application filed April 2, 1920. Serial No. 370,833.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JorrN FREDERICK SoHLArrI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City,-in the county of VVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emulsifying-Machines, of which the following is a specification;
My invention is an improvement in emul sifying machines, and has for its ob ec t to provide a machine of the character specified by means of which an emulsion between two or more substances, not. capable of chemical combination may be intimately mixed to form' the emulsion.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the emulsifying machine,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a cup shaped casing is provided, con sisting of a body portion 1 and an integral end 2, the other end of the casing being closed by a head 3 which has a'flange 4 fitting about the end of the body. Thi casing is mounted on a shaft or spindle 15, which may be connected with any suitable means for rotating said spindle at a high rate of speed, and the closed end 2 of the casing has an opening through which a threaded portion 6 on the spindle is passed.
The spindle has an annular rib 7 betweenthe threaded portion and the body of the spindle, which rib abuts the outer face of the bottom 2, and a sleeve 8 is threaded onto the threaded portion of the spindle. This threaded portion of the spindle has oppositely arranged notches 9 which form ports for placing the sleeve 8 in communication with the interiorof the cup shaped casing, that is, with the annular space between the body of the casing and the sleeve;
Referrlng to Fig. 1, it will be seen that these ports extend longitudinally of the spindle and then radially, and the sleeve has openings at the outer ends of the ports.
The sleeve is threaded onto the threaded end.
of the spindle, as before mentioned, and it passes through an opening in the head 3 at the opposite end from the splndle.
Outside the head a nut 9 is threaded onto the sleeve for holding the head in place. The body 1 of the casing has an annular rib 10 just above the ports 9, the said rib being of con siderable depth, as shown," and above the rib and between the rib and the head there is provided a series of longitudinally extending slots or passages 11. At the forward.
side of each slot thereis arranged a blade or'vane 12 extending radially of the casing,
the said blades or vanes being spaced a slight distance from the slots or passages, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.
In operation, the materials to be emulsified are fed through the sleeve 8,being conveyed to the outer end thereof in any suitable or desired manner. These materials pass through the sleeve and byway of the ports 9 into that portion of the casing l-2 between the rib 10 and the closed end 2.
The centrifugal force tends to hold the materials against the peripheral wall of the casing, and such materials are compelledto travel inwardly over the rib 10 as they move toward the ports 11. thoroughly mixed and emulsified during their passage from the sleeve to the ports The materials are 11 into any suitable container which is are i ranged outside of the casing, it being understood that the casing is rotatable, within the container which is fixed. The vanes 12 prevent the liquid from circling with the casing 12 during its operation. The emulsifier is simple in construction,easily operated and inexpensive.
Iclaim: I 1. A device of the character specified,
comprising a closed casing, means for ro--.
tating the casing, said casing having discharge ports near its outer end, a feed tube at the axis of the casing, said tube having discharge ports at its inner end and at the inner end of the casing, and the casing having an internal annular rib between the discharge ports of the casing and the discharge ports of the feed tube for constraining the material to move inwardly toward the center' of thecasing before passing through the discharge ports, the casing having radial tongues adjacent to the discharge ports, and said feed tube bein imperforate between the annular rib and t e outer end of the cas 2 I l 1 ,s53,425
the outlet, said casing having an internal circumferentially extending annular rib be- 10 tWeen the inlet and the outlets, and means for feeding the material at thebottom of the casing and between .the rib and the said bottom.
