SIGNAL roa" noroa vnmotns. I
To all/whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Jnssn G. Rosnnooivr, a citizen of the United States, residing at, Cincinnati,in theicounty of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signals for Motor Vehicles, of which the following is'a speclfication.
My present invention pertains to vehiclesignals and it contemplates the provision of av-ehicle signal that may be readily se-. cured to a vehicle and easily operated to indicate the direction in which-the occupant or occupants of the vehicle desire to travel; The invention in all of its details'will be fully understood from the following .description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specifica-. tion in which: 7 r
Figure 1, is a front elevation illustrating the signal box and the organized meohanism I employ to designate directions-oftravel. f Fig. 2 is a side elevation'of the. devlce.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of my novelyoke for moving the signal box. The signal box 1 is ofthe constructlo'n illustrated and in the walls of the box I )lace slides bearing such legends a -.Stop, Right, Left, etc.
Within said .boX .1 an .electricibulb 2 is provided on the socket 3. The socket 3 is secured to a threaded conduit 4 through which the wiring passes, it being apparent that the wiring 5 is connected to a suitable source of electric energy (not shown).
The conduit 4 at its outer end is threaded to enter a similarly threaded opening in the support 7, and is secured by a threaded bushing arranged on the support 7. Thus the conduit 4 becomes an axle around which the journal 6 revolves.
Keyed or otherwise movable with the journal 6 is a toothed-wheel 8 that meshes with a toothed-wheel 9 which in turn is loose on the bolt that passes through the support 7 and is secured thereto by the nut 11. As clearly shown, I provide a collar between the support 7 and nut 11 and sald .collar by preference is threaded to the bolt 10.
By reference to Fig. 1, it will be apparent that the support 7 extends downwardly and has an integral portion 71 formed at rlght angles to its upstanding portion and secured to. the

support 13 of U-shapedform.

nertion 71 y bolts 141s asec ndaryf cent the lower end thereof'is ashaft15 and secured on' the shaft 15 is a 'yokelfihaving port1ons17, 18 and 19 that surround the shaft 15 and movable independently thereof."
' By reference toFig'.' 3 itwill beseen that a miter gear 20 .isfast onthe' shaft 15 and meshing with the gear 20 is'a'mite'r gear 21' made fast to the: shaft 23 that" passes through the yoke 16 and rests adjacent the" shaft-15 and. portion'18 of said yoke16. At 1135 outer end the shaft 23- 'is provided with a handle 24.
At this point I would distinctly have it" understood that the shaft 15 passes through and is .movable in' the comparatively long upstanding arm .of the secondary .supportf 13. However the boltlO is secured in" permanent manneronthe said long arm of the support. Z I would have it understoodfthat the support 13 may when occasion demands be dispensed with 'exce'pt that por'tion illus trated to the left of the gear 21in Fig. 1'; I l the principal purpose of this support 13 being to hold the inner' end o'f'the"shaft 15' in proper position with respect topo'rtion ii 71. of support 7.
Between the supports13 'and*7' respec tively, theshaft 15- ispr'ovided with i'a toothed-wheel 25 that is keyed and movable with said shaft and between the wheel 25 and support 7 is a collar 26 fast on the Shaft 15;.
In order to at'alltimes cause the gears 20 and 21 to mesh, I provide in the hubs 27 and 28 respectively of each gear spring washers 29 and 30.
I would distinctly have it understood that the gears 20 and 21 may be of the miter gear or beveled type or of any type compatible with the purpose of my invention. I
In the use of the signal, the support 7 is secured on the cowl or in fact at any convenient place on an automobile, so long as r the handle 24 is in ready reach of the driver upward direction when the gear 21 will impart rotary motion to shaft 15 and toothedwheel 25 through gear 20.
I V The wheel willimpart motion to wheel 9 which in turn will rotate Wheel 8 and hence journal 6. The'journal 6 being secured to signal box 1, naturally another destination signal will be presented to persons front of or in rear of the VGhlOlG.
It is'obvious that-the operator will befamiliar with the s1gnal .-that is presentedto pedestrians or other vehicle occupants and hence will know in What. direction to move the handle 24. e 1 It isto be understood that the gears may bedecreased or increased in size as well as thewheels and shafts in order to accommodate the same to a larger or smaller signal box. I Also when desired the wheel 9 may be dispensed with when occasion demands.
I would; have it understood that I do not I Wish to confine myself to the exact construe-- the combination of a main support ofsubst antially L -shaped form, a secondary support of substantially V-shaped form secured to the main support, a signal box arranged adjacent the main support near' the upper end thereof,'a journal that passes through the main support and into the'signal box, a toothed wheel mounted on the journal between the box andmain support, a short journal passed through the main support and secured at one end to themain support and having its opposite end passed through the V-shaped support and secured to said support, a toothed wheel mounted on the about the shaft, a second shaft extending through the yoke and a gear arrangedon the inner end of the shaft and having teeththat mesh with those of thebeveled gear, and a handle formed integral on one end of the second shaft that extends through the yoke. I In a device for the purpose set forth the combination of a main support, a secondary support arranged in the main sup port, a signal box arranged above the sec-. ondary support, a journal arranged in the main support and box, a toothed wheel mounted on the journal, a journal arranged below the first-named journal, a toothed Wheel secured on the second journal and engaging the first toothed wheel, a shaft passing through the main support and secondary support, a toothed wheel arranged on the shaft directly below and engaging the second toothed Wheel and means secured on the shaft for operating the several wheels; said means comprising a yoke, a beveled gear arranged in the yoke and a bevel gear actuable by the first gear and mounted onthe shaft and a handle mounted on the yoke.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMILIE HERTWIG, VICTOR WM. HERTWIG.
