WIENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rothschild, county of. Marathon, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Re ulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in regulators.
In the accompanying drawin I have shown my improvements as em Iodied by me in a temperature regulator, the machine controlled or driven by the second motor not being illustrated as my present improve ments do not relate to such features.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved regulator by means of which temperatures, speeds or pressures may be very accurately controlled.
Second, to provide an improved regulator means having these advantages which is entirely automatic.
Third, to provide an improved control apparatus which may be adjusted to the tem perature desired and the temperature very evenly maintained at the point to which the apparatus is adjusted.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description tofollow.
I accomplish the objects ofmy invention e devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

The device illustrated is especially designed by me for regulating? the temperaing machine and the numeral 6 represents a thermometer bulb adapted to be inserted into the drier. This bulb is connected by a flexible tube 7 with a recording thermometer vl5 is. provided clearly illustrated having a chart 8 and a pen carryin arm 9 pivoted at 10, the pivot being provid ed with an arm 13 connected by, the link 14 to the recording thermostatic mechanism which is not here shown as such mechanism forms no part of this invention.

The arm. 15 also swings or moves to tilt the balance beam 17 through the pin and slot connection described.- This balance beam carries receptacles 19 containing. mercury or other suitable liquid adapted to '00- I act with the contact pins 20. These contact pins are of graduated length, the length being such that when the balance beam is on center the pinsare partially submerged and partially above the mercury. These contact pins are connected by the wires 21 to a series of resistance'units 22 in the motor circuits, so that as the contact pins are submerged in or withdrawn from the mercury ,the resistance units are cut into or out of the motor circuit, thus increasing or diminishing the speed of the motor. In the structure illustrated, the apparatus is designed to control two motors and the speeding up or reducing' of the motors depends on whether the resistance is cut into the field or on the rotor of the motor, so that by connecting one set of resistance units to the rotor of one motor and the other set of resistance units to the field, both motors may be speeded up or their speed reduced simultaneously.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the contact points are about one-half submerged, a coating over the surface ofthe mercury to prevent sparking as the contact points are with.- drawn or submerged. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various adaptations of my improvements as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of motors, control means for said motors each comprising a series of resistance units, groups of contact points of graduated length connected to said seriesof resistance units, a recording ther mometer comprising a pen arm pivot, an arm adjustably attached to the pivot, a beam having a central arm'operatively associated with said arm on said pen arm pivot, and receptacles carried by said beam groups of contact points and means for controlling said balance beam.
3. In an apparatus of the class described,
. the combination of a motor, a control means for said motor comprising a series of re sistance units, a group of contact points of graduated length connected to said series of resistance units, a recording thermometer comprising a pen arm pivot, an arm ad- 'ustably attached to the pivot, a pivoted eam operatively associated with said arm on said pen arm pivot, and a receptacle carried by said beam and containlng mercury coacting with the said group of contact points, for the purpose specified.
4. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination of a pair of motors, a beam,
a thermostatic means for controlling the said beam, control means for .said motors each comprising a series of resistance units, groups of contact pins of graduated length connected 0 said resistance units, and receptacles carried by said beam and containing a liquid coacting with said contact pins, for the purpose specified.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a motor, a beam, a thermostatic means for controlling the said beam, a control means for said motor comprising a series of .resistance units, a group of contact pins of graduated length connected to said resistance units, and a receptacle carried by said beam and containing a liquid coacting with said contact pins, for the purpose specified.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a motor, a control means for said motor comprising a series of resistance units, a series of contact points connected to said series of resistance units, a receptacle containing mercury coacting with said contact pins to control said resistance units, and a thermostatically actuated means for raising and lowering said receptacle, for the purpose specified.
7. The combination in a temperature regulating apparatus including a motor, of
a control means for said motor comprising a series of resistance units, a series of contact points'connected to said series of resistance units, a receptacle containing a fluid coacting with said contact pins to control said resistance units, and thermostatically controlled means for regulating the submersion of said contact pins in said liquid.
8. The combination in a temperature regulating apparatus including a motor, of.
means for controlling the current to the motor comprising a series of contact pins, a receptacle containing a liquid coacting w1th said contact pins and thermostatically controlled means for regulating the submersion of said contact pins in said liquid.
