My ealculatingmachine being one intended,' moreparticularly, to be placed in operation through the medium of the numeral key levers of a typewritingmachine I will, without limiting'myself to any particular means for rendering it operative, describe the machine as operated by the numeral key levers of any ordinary typewrit ing machine, as contemplated in my U. S. Patent No. 933,600, issued September 7, 1909.
With this understanding I will first state that A designates the numeral key levers of a typewriting machine which is intended to be placed above my calculating machine, these key levers being provided with keys B and being of denominations from one to nine.
l designates the base of my calculating machine surmounted by side members 2, which, with said base, form the frame of my machine. The frame thus formed preferably has attached to it a top housing 3 by which an inclosure for the calculating mechanism is completed.
4 designates a transverse rod mounted in the side frame members 2. 5 are integer wheels loosely arranged on said rod, there being nine of these wheels responding to the numeral key levers A. The integer wheels 5 are provided with peripheral teeth that are adapted to be placed in mesh with wheels on a constantly rotating shaft, whereby said wheels will have partial rotation imparted to them in different degrees, each integer Wheel being rotated a distance that causes it to impart to the transmission shaft a movement that is the equivalent of a series of steps corresponding in number to the numerical value of the integer wheels.
6 designates the drive shaft and 7 the Wheels fixed thereto to which the peripheral teeth of the integer wheels are moved, in order that the integer wheels may he partially rotatedduriug engagement between their peripheral teeth and the drive wheels. 9 is a transmission shaft parallel with the integer wheel supporting rod 4 and the drive shaftG and on which are rigidly mounted a series of transmission wheels 8. All of the transmission wheels 8 are operable by the integer wheels to a degree corresponding to that to which said integer wheels are operated by the wheels on the drive shaft 6. The operation of the transmission shaft by the integer wheels is in conformity to the degree of operation of each integer wheel during engagement of its peripheral teeth.
The transmission shaft 9 is provided with a miter wheel 10 that meshes with a miter wheel 11 on a transmission shaft 12 leading to'registering mechanism. The parts just described arequite similar, in general, to

This lilechanism is operable by thenunieral key levers A and comprises aseries of levers 32 located beneath said key levers and loosely mounted upon a pivot rod 33. The arms of the. levers. 32 which are engaged bythe key levers A are maintained in normal positions by springs 34 (see Fig. II), and said levBrS'are prov ded with tails 32' connected by pull rods 35 to the dogs 18. When a numere-a1, key lever A. is depressed, the lever 32 beneath it is operated, and the pull rod 35 attachedto said lever isdrawn forwardly,
whereby the dog operable by said lever is operated to free the integer: wheel normally restrained thereby, and said integer Wheel is brought into action in the manner set. forth. 7 s
The parts of my machine thusfar described are such as may be used in calculations involving addition and substraction, and no invention is herein claimed for them ase, y
36 designatesa multiplying wheel shaft in front of the transmission shaft 9. This shaft 36hasjfixedto it a series of mu lti'pl ingv w eels 3? havin teeth fvarving 1mm, rs. suitable for ma tiplication of the integers 2', 3, 4, 5,6, 'I, ,8 and 9. The shaft 36' is drivenb V a drive wheel 38 on the transmis sion' sha t 9,' whieh meshes with a pinion 39- loosely mounted on said shaft 36, and it will be understood that said pinion is' driven whenever the transmission shaft 9 is rotated by the integer wheels 5.
When my machine is in service for other than'multiplying, the pinion 39 turns idly on the multiplying shaft and it is brought into operation to operate said shaft by clutch mechanism comIpri'sing the following 'parts'f '41, (see Figs. VI and VII), is a 10 clutch sleeve splined to the multiplying shaftjjadjacent the pinion 39, and provide with teeth 42, which'may be moved into mesh with clutch teeth 40 on the side of the pinion 39. The clutch sleeve 41 is provided 7 with an annular groove 43 which receives the fork of a shifter arm 44 pivoted to the base of a post 45 in which the multiplying shaft '36 is journaled. A retracting spring 5346 (see Figs. VI- and VII), connecting the,
.3 shifter, arm to the post 45,'serves to .hold the clutch sleeve 41 normally separated from the ciutch teeth of the pinion 39, and the clutch sleeve is shifted to engage said pinion by a bell crank lever 47, the said lever having one .of its arms fitted to a' rotatable cam 48 mounted on a horizontal support 49, extending from the post 46 beneath the multiplying shaft. By mbvement of the bell crank Ieve 47, the cam 48 works against the 80 shifter arm 44, and causes it to carry the clutch sleeve 41 into coiiperative engagement with the pinion 39,thereby providing for the rotation of the multiplying shaft with said inion. The bell crank lever -47 is operated y a connecting rod 50 extending from said lever to mechanism for imparting longitudinal movement thereto, as will be hereinafter described. 7 51 desi ates the transmission shaft of the 40 multiplyu mechanism, (see Figs. I, II, V, {VIII and 1X), operable by any of the multiplying wheels 37 through the medium of 'transmission wheels 52 movable into and out .of engagement with the multiplying wheels.
lijlach transmission wheel 52 is loosely mounted on the shaft 51 and .is provided with a "lutch member 53, which is shiftable to and 1mm an adjacent clutch member 54 fixed to said shaft. Beneath the transmis 5 0 sion shaft 51 of the multiplying mechanism is a frame member 55, secured to the base 1, including posts 56 which are I located in proximity to the several transmission wheels 152. 57 are shifter arms pivoted to the frame member 55, and having'forks which are fitted in grooves in sleeves 52' carried by the multiplying mechanism transmission wheels 52. -These shifter arms serve to move the clutch members 53 of the transmission wheels 52 60 into and out of engagement with the clutch members 54 fixed to the multiplyin mechanism transmission shaft. 1 Desire movements of theshifter arms 57 aresecured by toggles 58, each having one link pivoted to $5 the sleeve of the transmission wheel 52 shift- II), are opera able thereby, and its other link pivoted to the adjacent post 56. To gle operating rods 59 lead from said toggies to' mechanism which will be subsequently setforth.
The multiplying mechanism transmission shaft 51 has fixed to it at its end nearest the transmission shaft 12, leading to the registering mechanism, a gearwheel 60, which is constantly in mesh with a gear wheel 61, fixed to a short shaft 62, carrying also a bevel gear 63, meshin with a bevel gear fixed to the shaft 12. onsequently, any rotative movement imparted to the transmission shaft 51 of the multi lying mechanism by the multiplying wheel 37 1s communicated to the transmission shaft 12.
The registering mechanism operable by the transmission shaft 12 comprises total wheels 64 meshing with gear wheels'65, and a traveling drive wheel 66 lined to a drive shaft 67, the traveling whee 66 being'adapted to mesh with an of the gear wheels 65,, The drive shaft 67 isprovided with a bevel gear 68, (Fig. I), meshing witha bevel gear 69 on the transmission shaft 12. The travelmg drive wheel 66 turns with the drive shaft 67, and said wheel travels on the drive shaft step by step, as will be hereinafter. more particularly set forth.
The multiplying keys M, (Figs. I and 96 is to shift the clutch sleeve 41, on the multipl in wheel shaft 36, into engagement with .t e c utch teeth on the pinion 89, at the same time shiftin' one of the pinions 52 so that its clutch teet will interlock with a clutch member 54 on the transmission shaft 51, alsodisengaging the miterwheel 11, on the transmission shaft 12 from the miter wheel 10 on the shaft 9. I will now describe the key connections for shifting the different clutch members. Each multiplying key M is secured to a bell crank lever 70 supported by a pivot rod 71. A series of lever arms 72 supported by a pivot rod 73 are secured at their upper ends to the several bell cran'k levers 70.
74 designates restoring springs connecting the lever arms 72 to a stationary cross bar 75. The toggle 0 )erating rods, 59. connect the toggles 58 to t is lever arms 72, so that any one of the multipl ing keys M may be operated to shift'one o the shifter arms 57, thereby moving one of,the clutch members 53 into engagement with a clutch member 54 fixed to the shaft 51. This 0 ration will no cause the shaft 51 of the multip ying mechanism to turn in response to movements of the multiplying wheel shaft 36.
The means for disengagin the miter wheel 11 from the miter whee 10, and at the same time engaging the clutch member 41 with the clutch teeth on the drive pinion 39, comprises ah abutment rod 76 engaging the several key levers 70 and connected at its ends to arms 7 7 the latter being pivotally 180 supportedby a rod 78. One of the arms 77 is connected to apull rod 79, (Figs. I and III), which may be operated to shift the miter wheel 11 as I will be presently described, and the other arm 77 is connected to the pull rod 50, (Fig. I), located at the right hand side of the machine, and connected to the cam operating lever 47. When the pull rod is pulled toward the front of the machine, the bell crank lever 47 is rocked,v with the result of rocking the cam 48 and shifter arm 44 to shift the teeth of the clutch sleeve 41 into engagement with the clutch teeth on the pinion 49. This causes the multiplying wheel shaft 36 to turn in response to movements of the drive'wheel 38 on the transmission.shaft 9. The miter Wheel 10 on the end of the transmission shaft 9 is disengaged from the miter wheel 11 by the following mechanism, (see Figs. I, II, and HI) 80 designates a shifter arm secured to a rock shaft 81 and provided with a bifurcated'upper end which lies in an annular groove in the miter wheel 11. A rocker arm 82, secured to the inner end of the rock shaft 81, is formed with a slotted end to receive a pin at the end of a bell crank lever 83. The bell crank lever 83 is pivoted at 84 and provided with a short arm 85, to which the pull rod 79 is connected.
'86 designates a restoring spring (Fig. III), tending to shift the miter wheel 11 into engagement with the miter wheel 10.
When one of the multiplying keys M is depressed, its bell crank lever 70 is rocked to shift the abutment rod 76 toward the rear of the machine. The arms 77, at the ends of the abutment rod 76, are then rocked on the pivot rod 78 so that the pull rods 79 and 50, secured to the arms 77, are pulled forwardly. The ull rod 79 operates the parts shown in F 1g. III so as to disengage the miter wheel 11 from the miter wheel on' the shaft 9, while the pull rod 50 at the right hand side of the machine moves the cam operating lever 47 to shift the clutch sleeve 41, as previously described. This operation causes the movements of the integer wheels 5 to be transmitted to the registering mechanism through the following parts: One of the wheels 8 meshing with one of the integer wheels 5, transmission shaft 9, drive gear 38, pinion 39, clutch sleeve 41, multiplying wheel shaft 36, one of the multiplying wheels 37, one of the inions 52, one of the clutch members 54, s aft 51, bevel gear at the end of said shaft, bevel gear 61, short shaft 62,.miter wheel 63, transmission shaft 12, miter gears 69 and 68, and the drive shaft 67 to which the traveling drive wheel 66 is splined.
In performing addition the parts of the machine occupy the positions seen in Fig. I
the miter gears 10 and 11 being engaged with each other so that the movements of the integer wheels 5 are transmitted to said miter wheels through the transmission wheels 8, (Fig. II), and transmission shaft 9, the miter wheel I'Obeing secured to the shaft 9.
In performing calculations involving multiplication, the desired multiplying key M is depressed to throw the clutch mechanism, previously described, and the selected multiplying-key is held down by a latch rod 90 carried by sprin actuated arms91 pivoted to a rod 92, see igs. I and H. One of the numerals keys B is then depressed to release one of the integer wheels 5, thereby permitting saidinteger wheel to be turned a certain numher of steps by one of the constantly rotating drive wheels 7 (Figs. II and The motionofithe integer wheel is then transmitted to the registering mechanism through the long train of gearing, including one of the multiplying wheels 37 and one ofthe pinions 52. The motion of the integer wheel is multipliedthrough the medium of the multiplying wheels 37 and 52, and the registering mechanism is driven to indicate the product of-the multiplier and multiplicand represented-by the two select- .teger wheel to-move four steps; and ifthe 5 key of group M has been depressed, one of the multiplying pinions 52 will be interlocked with a clutch member 54, so that the movement of the pinion 52 selected by the 5 key will be 5 x 4 steps; The transmission shafts 51 and 12 willthen move 20 steps and advance the registering mechanism accordingly.
The traveling drive wheel 66 of the registering mechanism is stepped along the drive shaft 67 in unison with the movements of the paper carriage of the typewriting machine, the movements of the paper carriage being transmitted to the traveling drive wheel by mechanism uite similar to that shown in my Patent o.- 933,600. I will therefore only briefly describe'this mechanism. The traveling drive wheel 66 is rotatably fitted to a traveling carriage in the form of a feed arm splined to a feed shaft 96, said feed shaft having spiral grooves for the reception of lugs or pins on the feed arms 95. 97 is a bevel gear fitted to one end of the feed shaft 96, and meshing with a bevel gear 98 on a shaft 99 which extends to the rear end of the machine. The'paper carriage, see Fig. I, includes a platen 100 and a rack bar 101, the latter being in mesh with a pinion 102 at the upper end of a vertical shaft 103. A bevel gear 104 fixed to the lower end of shaft 103 meshes with a inion 105 on the rear end of the shaft 99. t will be noted that a longitudinal movement of'the aper carriage C will rotate the vertical sha 103, horizontal shaft99, and the spirally grooved feed shaft 96, thereby stepping the travlin drive wheel 67 to the registeringwheels 0 different orders. a 1 i n The rotary movement of the traveling drive wheel 66 must be completed before the said drive-wheelste s away from the registering wheel in which the sum or product is to be retarded. ':I therefore provide means for restraining the'traveling wheel' and paperacarriage during-the operation of 'the calculating mechanism, said traveling wheel and carriage being released automatically at the end fof'each calculating operation; "106 is a 'tooth'edwheel fixedto the obliquely arranged shaitt 99, and 107 is a -lockin "do adapted toimbve between the teethlgo said wheel. The lockin dog is pivotally .sup portedat 108,:(Fig' V), audits rear-end is connected to" the rod .15 b 'means of a 'link 109 A spring. 110, (Fig. V), tendsfto-pull the-locking do "away from the toothed wheel 106;. A ebentil'll arrangedzzbelow the locking dog, is pivoted at '=1-12, and -pro vided with a tail 113, which overlies? a rockalile plate ll thelattenbeihg ipivoted to a rod 115.;- Therockable plate :114 extends transversely'ofE the machine andits' free ed e overlies the tails of the cam levers 25." 5' previously described, "when one of .the typewriting machine key's Bis depressed, one of the dogs 18, .(Fig: II),'ls rocked :so that its arm 2L moves upwardly," Thisraises the transverse rod 15, and at the same time begins :the calculating 0 eration by releasing an integer'wheel 5. he transverse rod 15 being; connected to theilocking dog 107 by the link 109, an upward movement of rod 15 acts to, movesaid locking dog between two of theteeth on the wheel 106, thus locking the shaft 99. When the locking dog 107 rocks into engagement with the wheel 106, the 'sprin r actuated detent 111,- (Fig. IV), rides un er a nose 117 on the lockin 3 dog 107, thereby holding said dog engage with the wheel 106. At the end of the calculating operation one of the pins 5' carried by an integer wheel 5' rides over'the apex 28 of acam lever 25, and the cam lever is thus'moved to elevate the free edge of the rockable plate-114;. This action 'moves the detentlll to the position seen in Fig. IV, and the spring 110 then pulls the locking dog 107 away from the toothed wheel 106. It will be understood that the mechanism just described locks the shaft 99to prevent the traveling wheel 66 and paper carriage C from traveling while said wheel is driving one of the register wheels, and thereafter automatically releases the traveling members to permit the desired traveling movement.
