MEANS T0v CHANGE THE SPEED OF DRIVING-PULLEYS.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILFRID DORION, residing at Gros Pin, Charlesbourg, in the Province of Quebec, in theDominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means to Change the Speed of Driving-Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to improve,- ments in a means to change the speed of a driving pulley, and is here shown as adapted to a motorcycle not fully illustrated in the drawings.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple, efiicient and comparatively inexpensive means of varying the speed imparted by a driving belt.
The present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts with a shaft, of three pulleys of different diameters sliding one over another, all being connected together on the same shaft and operated by a single lever whereby they can be shifted into operation one after the other and shifted out of operation all simultaneously by the same lever.
The invention will hereinafter be fully explained in the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

In the drawings, 1 is a portion of a motor cycle'f'rame, 2 is the motor and 3 is the crank shaft.
On one end of the crankshaft 3 is rigidly mounted the main driving pulley 4, preferably of small 'diameter,which isprovided with the upwardly projecting sides or guides 5 and inclined inner sides 6; and 7 are slotsin the said pulley 4- in which the pulley 8 slides.
The pulley 8 is preferably larger in diam eter than the pulley; 4. This pulley has a drum-like shape and is provided with lateral grooves 9 and oblique lugs 10 projecting therefrom which are adapted to slide on the pulley 4 and support the pulley 8. The pulley 8 will be hereinafter called the medium pulley.
The grooves 9 and lugs 10 correspond to the slots 7 in the pulley 4 so that the medium pulley 8 will entirely fit within the sides 5 of the small pulley 4 as disclosed in Fig. 2. The medium pulley 8 has .on one end a sleeve 11 which fits over the shaft 3 and 12 is a circular groove in which fits the sleeve 13 and 14 is a forked rod pivotally engaging lugs provided on said sleeve 13.
Slidable over the medium pulley 8 is pro vided a pulley of larger diameter 15 hereinafter called the large pulley, of practically similar shape to the medium pulley 8. This'larger pulley has a sleeve 16 which is slidable on the sleeve 11 of the medium pulley 8 and 17 are lateral slots corresponding to the slots 7 in the small pulley 4, so that this large pulley may fit within said pulley together with the medium pulley 8 as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The lateral slots 17 are so made as to engage the guide lugs 18 projecting from the medium pulley 8.
On the outer end of the sleeve 16 is provided a circumferential groove 19 and 20 is a rod forked at one end and adapted to pivotally engage the lugs provided in a collar or sleeve 21 which is provided in said groove 19.
A bracket 22 is secured on said motor and projects outward, and on its outer end is secured a stub shaft 23.
The rod 14 is pivotally mounted on said shaft 23. The rod 20 is also pivotally mounted on said stub shaft 23 and projects beyond said shaft at an angle and 24; is a hand lever pivotally secured at 25 and pivotally connected at its other end to the rod 20. On the frame 1 is provided a bracket 26 suitably notched to lock the said lever in position. Adjacent the shaft 23 is provided a flat spring 27 which is adapted to rest against the rod 14-.
Secured on the rod 20 is a guide member 28 preferably slotted and through which passes the rod 14 so that it will be carried forward, when the rod 20 is operated.
In the operation of the invention, it will readily be seen that on operating the hand lever 24, the rod 20 will be pushed forward carrying with it the pulley 15. The guide 28 which is secured to the rod 20 will pull the rod 14 and pulley 8, so that when the hand lever is pulled into the middle notch in the bracket 26, the pulley 8 will enter the main driving pulley 4:. On further pulling the hand lever into the next notch, the pulley 15 will be carried over the pulley 8 increasing the diameter of the main driving pulley 4. By reversing the operation, the

A device of the character described, comprising a driving pulley mounted on a driving shaft, said pulley having a plurality of slots therethrough, a medium'pulley having a plurality of projections adapted to register with the slots in said driving pulley, said medium pulley being loosely mounted and slidable on said shaft adjacent said driving pulley, a large vpulley loosely mounted and slidable on said shaft adjacent said medium pulley, said large pulley having a plurality of projections adapted to register with the slots in said driving pulley, a hand lever, rods connecting said medium and large pulleys to said lever, and means to cause said medium and lar 'e pulleys to saddle said driving pulley when said lever is operated substantially as described.
