' 1 Application filed 31111616,
To all whom it may concern? 7 v l3e it known that I,-H NRY J. Mitrnnsya cltlzen ofcthe-United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ofLos. Angeles and State of Calitornia, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the f following isa specification;
This invention relates to a folding. bed and particularly: pertains to abed of the vertically swingingtype; In folding'beds of the type adapted to be swung in and out of closet openings,,.it is usually necessary to constructthe bed of a length shorter than that of the ordinary bed to avoid forming the closetopening of disproportionate and unsightly height or forming the closet space with a sunken floor in order to give the space required to swing the bed vertically on 'its'support and to provide room for counterbalancing ele- It is, the. object of this invention to 'pro vide a folding hed. of compact construction andso arrangedasto permita spring frame and mattress of a lengthfof slxfeet'and four lnches: being. swung --Vvert1cally and passed. through anyopening. six feet and 'eightinches in. height. 1 7
Another 'ob'ect is to; provide a vertically movable. folding, bed. having a foot board pivotally and slidabl'yl mounted thereon in such mannerthat may be lowered' on the bedframe when the latter" is-at or near its vertical. positionto dispose the upper edge of therfootiboard substantiallylon a plane .witlithe. upper end fofi-thebedframe and theuhedifi'amer Another object is to provide a horizon in which the" foot. board is detachably con nectedJ-to the. framesothatvariOuS styles and, designs of' foti boards may ,beconstructed to be interchangeably, connected to V any shifting pivotal-"mountingzfor the bed framelwhereby the head :end portion ofi'the hed', frame projectingjheyond the pivotal mounting thereof'may be caused to move on a lverticalplane, in swinging the bed frame up. or down; Y e

fitted with casters 11.: p
In carrying out my, invention.- a rectan gular frame, comprising horizontally extending end bars I 12- and side rods 13 and 14;, is" rigidly attached to the lojwer ends oi the posts 10 and isprovidedw'ith casters 15 spaced in front ofkthe casters .11 and forming a base'fon which" the jbed superstructure is carried.' Standards: 16 extend" upwardly abovethe' caste'rs 15 horizontally extending guide" their upper-ends, Theguide barsare'pi'ovided with pivot'p'iiis l8 lwhichfejntend into V sockets on the jipperfendsiof forming pivots onywhi'ch" they guide bars may swing .'lat'e rallyg .Moiinte'd on. aegis-51s bars to slide lengthwise thereof. are 1 9 which-form bearin' s" for hori z'ontallyextending "trunnion s: 2' carried, by the side V are npturnedpn itheir finn'er i otally connect with a'jhori'zo'ntal bar22yhavm guide: We t n ndevh di fi'filb y; V engage vertical dove-tail guide flanges 23 ea ne by theposts 10. connecti g with t the bar '22 is eries offspringsfi'lj which rail. These springs serve as a counterbalance in swlngmg the side rails and the bed Vertically.
The outer ends of the side, rails 21 are-"rig idly connected to the'ends of anangle iron 27 which may constitute the end member-of I a bed spring, the other end member of which comprises an angle iron 28 carried'at the bend of the inner ends of the side ra il. A woven wire mattress support 29 is sus pended between the angle irons 2'? and 28 and connect therethroughby coil springsSO.
Pivoted at 31 on the angle iron27 adjacent each end thereof are depending guide ways 32 adapted to slidably receive slide ribs 33 formed on the side posts 84 of the foot rail 35. T'heguide ways 32 are open at their upper 'end to receive the guide ribs and are provided with stops 36 at their lower ends to engage theguide ribs and limit the down- J Ward movement of the latter within the guide ways. The foot rail is thus detachably' connected to the guide ways so as to be interchangeable.- The upper ends of-the guide ways are ofiset in relation to their pivots 31 and are formed with shoulders '37 which extend beneath the angle iron as shown in Fig. 6.' These shoulders are soarrangedin relation to the guide ribs-that when the bed is in its horizontal positionand the foot rail is supported 'on'the floor, the
' shoulder will be disposed intermediate the guide ribs so that the upper ends of. the guide ribs will extend into lockingstirrups 88 carried on the angle iron 27 these stirrupsbeing formed :withQchannels open at their lower ends to receive the npper ends of the guide ribs and closed attheir ends by flanges 39 against which the upper ends of the guide ribs are adapted to abut. means for locking the foot rail against move- 7 ment in relation to the-guide ways when the bed is in its horizontal position and the gulde ribs are disposed to engage both the locking 'stirrups and the upper ends of the guide ways a spring pressed latch 40 is mounted in one of theposts' 34 toengage the 'As almeans for swinging the vbed frame in and out of a closet when in its foldedposition the frame ispivotallyconnectedto an arm 41 at the center of the headrail fil, the
-arm 4l being pivoted at 42 to the floor at a point within the closet. The connection between the bed and the arm 41 comprises a .yoke143 carried by the bed frame the lower leg'of which is formed with a fork 44 adapted to be disposed astride of .a pin 45 carried on the arm 41 and the upper end of'which is adapted to be detachably connecte'd tothe arm 41 a removable pivot pin 46as shown in Fig. 3.. By, removing the pin 46 the bed frame maybe detached from the arm 41 and moved about on its casters either inits open or closed position.
As a
For the purpose of automatically swinging the foot rail to fold and'unfold same in raising and lowering the bed, a draglink 47 is-pivotally connectedgto the bar 14 and branches at its outer end into pivotal engageinent witlrthe lower end of the guide ways 32. v
Assume the bed to be in its horizontal; po-
sition as shown in Fig. 1 and as indicated in full lines in Fig.2 in which position it'will be locked against upward movement by the latch 40 as shown in Fig. 6-withthe spri 24 under tension." 1 The fOOt rail will be r1g-' idly held in a vertical position reasonof t gui s ng engag 'j the ewically alined channels of the guide ways and locking stirrups. NVhen the parts ai'e thus positioned the v bed" may be freely, moved about on its casters on disengaging the pivot pin 46. \Vhen it is desired to raise the bed into its folded position thelatch40is disengaged from theflange 39 whereupon the lowerend of the bed frame is liftedin relation to the foot rail, as indicated indotted lines in Fig. 6, to dispose the guide ribs'entirely within the: guide ways; which are then the foot portion ofv the lbeid upwardly" the drag link will swing the'guide ways inwardly s that they will extend substantially with the side rails when tlie latter are disfree to rock on their pivots 81. 'On1 n'o ving posedin their vertical position as indicated 7 in. dotted lines in Fig. 2.. The' fo ot, railivill then belowered in relation to theigiridie ways and supported by the guide ribs seating on the stops 36 and will thus be disposed with the top of the foot rail extending on a plane with the foot portion of the bed'fra ne.
Inswinging the bed frame upwardly it turns on i the trunnions'l 20 .the'bar' 22 moves downwardly on the guide "flanges 23.
As the inner" end of the bed moves downwardly thesleevesli). advance on the guide bars17 to shift the trunnions 'or pivotal point. of the bed fr'ame so that the :22 may travel vertically on the guide flanges 23,"
the sleeve moving baclg to. a normal position on the guide bar asthe bar22traverses the lower half of its path ottravel. WVhen the 32 withthe foot rail thereon being disposed vertically by the action of thedraglink 47. Ondepressing the forward po i onof the bed the locking stirrups willl be' moved. astride of the guide ribs where pon the I latch 40 will reengage the locking. stirr p' to lock the bed against vertical movementfon ,its pivot thus effectively holding the .bed frame against being mqyed 'to its folded is in its vertical position, will permit constructing the bed proper of a length but a few inches shorter than the height of the opening through which it is to pass.
