Quinn/ oz BUREN THOMAS.
WILFRED VAN w'I-IirRnD VAN BUREN-THoMAsoFcATsKILn Nnw'YoRK; 1 j 1 s pF-oILrnG GOVERNOR.
Told?! whom it may concern y l 'B it know t I, WE-FRED VAN BUM-k THOMAS,I L citizen of the United States, residin at Catskill, in the county of Greene and tate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Oiling Governors, of which the following is a 'speci-' fication.
This'invention relates to self-oiling governors, and it cons sts in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
an even, regular and uninterrupted ispeec An object of the invention is to provide:-
a' governor mechanism with self-oiling means, whereby thedisk of the governor may move freely on the stop or friction bar and upon the shaft and a sensitivegoverp l vided at its periphery with an inturned an nular flange 8, in which is placed a lubricantnor is provided.
Another object of the invention is to provide a governor mechanism with self-oiling means, whereby the thorough lubrication of the friction speed control is had assurin and rotation. V
The self-oiling governor signed to be used upon talking machlnes, as, for instance, dictating machines, phonographs, dictaphones, ediphones and the like.
The invention consistsprima'rily in providing the disk of thelgovernor mechanism with an inturned periphery or flange, and means for supplying a lubricant to the intermediate portion of the body of the disk and within the flange whereby the said lubricant may gravitate or trickle upon the disk and the shaft and lubricate the bearing between the disk and the shaft and the face of the stop or friction bar where it contacts the disk. The inturned periphery or portion of the disk prevents the lubricant from flying from the disk when the disk is rotatmg.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of one form f of the self-oiling governor with parts in section.
Fig. 2, is a-transverse sectional view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5, are detailed sectional views of modified forms of the disks and oiling means which may be employed in the governor mechanism.
The governor mechanism comprises a shaft 1, which may be located in the usual manner. A collar 2, is fixed to the shaft 1, and resilient arms 3 are attached at one end to the collar 2, an a earry at their inter= 6' Application filea 'a rn 5, 1919. iSerial No; 287,811

Specification ofLetters l ateiitf "Patented S t 14 i I fiXedto-jthe hub 5, anda disk The disk 6, splined upon the shaft 1, that is to Say,
that this disk "may slide along the shaft .1
but is constrainedto rotate inunison with the same by means of the key 7, whichlis fixed to the shaft ,1, and which is slidably, re-
ceived the hub 5. Therefore, it willvbe seen. that afterthe shaft 1 rotates, the
. weights 4, are spread upon by centrifugal force, and the arms 3, are bowed outwardly wherebythe hub 5, and'disk 6, are drawn toward the collar in the usual manner.
Inlthe form of the invention as illustrated 1n Flgs. 1, 2, 4and'5, the disk 6 isrpro-v wick 10. A post 11, is located adjacent-to the upper portion of the disk 6, and may be mounted upon a fixed support '(not shown) The stop or,friction bar 12 is carried at the lower end of the post 11, and
extends to the edge of, the flange 8, and
itsfinner end'in the vicinity of the side of,
the disk '6, but normally spaced therefrom. The stop or friction bar 12, may be a tube and have connected an oil cup 13, carried at the outer end of the tube 12, to further supply lubrication.
Therefore, as the disk 6, is moved toward the collar 2, the body portion of the disk will come in contact properly lubricated with the end of the friction speed control bar 12, causing equal friction and producing an even and uninterrupted speed and rotary movement of the disk 6, and-the shaft 1, is checked and governed in a usual manner. At the same time the lubricant-may flow from the oil cup 13, through the tube 12, and deposit a further supply of lubricant to'the friction speed control bar 12, and
upon the sides of. the disk 6. The lubricant is prevented from being thrown off from the periphery of thedisk by the flange 8, and
the lubricant gravitates down lubricating the face of the disk 6, and saturates the r wicks. 10, and passes through the aperture 9, and lubricates the bearin between the.
hub 5, and theshaft 1 whereby the disk 6, may move freely and. regularly upon the.
shaft.
V Inthe' form of the invention as illustrated in'hig. 5, of the drawing, the oil cup 1'3,'is
attached directlyto=the intermediate portion of the disk 6, and in this case the usual :fric
tion speed control 12 is used.
In the form of the invention as illustratedin Fig. 3, the disk 6, is provided with an annular groove 14, which may receive the end portion of the member 12, whereby the oil or lubricant; is deposited in the groove 14' and by gravitation lubricates the stop or' friction speed controlbar 12, and may gravitate from the groove 14 through a provid ed"d'uct16,fto the bearing between the hub ofthe disk'andthe shaft. I
In the form of' th'e invention as illustrated in Fig. 4,-of the drawing, theintermediate portion of thedisk-ifi, is thickened as at 1 5, and the said thickened portion is provided with ducts 16; through which the oil may pass from the periphery or portion of the disk to the bearing between the hub of the rotated. p 7 While I havershown and"described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood" that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement; of' parts may be made, to suit practical conditions, comprehended Within the scope of the inclaimed is:
provided such alterations are vention. and what is-claimedi Having j l. A self-oiling governor comprising a shai'tya disk slidably mounted thereon and constrained to rotate with the same, means] adapted to be operated by centrifugal. force for moving the disk, a'brake means on friction speed control adapted to be lubricated described the invention, What is and engaged by: the disk, said. disk, being provided with means for. preventing. the
lubricant from flying: from the same by centrifugal force and means for supplying a lubricant to the diskand? friction speed control.
2. In a device as described, a shaft, a disk slidably mounted thereon, means for.
sliding the disk, said' disk having. 'an in turned periphery or'fi'ange, a tube located within the flange and} having aninstep to be engaged by the, disk andimeansifor supplyin a lubricant; to the tube, and disk;
3. n a device as. described, a disk, a
shaft upon which the disk. is slidably mounted, means for moving the di'skjupon the shaft, said disk having a hub provided with an aperture, a wick located in the aperture, said disk havingan inturnedperiphery' or flange and means for supplying a 1ubri cant to the intermediate portion of the disk,
