T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEFANO SANTILLI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fruit- Crusher, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to a fruit crusher and press designed to crush ripe fruit and press the juice therefrom.
Theobjects of the invention are the provision of a combined fruit crusher and press arran'J-Jed to crush the fruit into a pulp and deposit the same into a container which container is moved beneath the press, said press being arranged to be forced into the container pressing or squeezing the juice from the crushed fruit.
The above objects are attained by providing a frame in which is mounted a hopper having a rotatablecrusher head therein, a vertically movable press being mounted in the frame adjacent to the hopper, a 'containcr being provided below the hopper and press and arranged to be moved directly beneath either the hopper or press as desired.
ii ith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrange-ment of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions,
sizeand minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the-advantages of the invention.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which .Figure l is .a side elevation partly in section of a fruit crusher and press embodying the invention.

Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the crushing plate.
A practical embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

AI cylindrical hopper 5 preferably pro vided at its upper end with a flared mouth 6 is mounted upon the crushing plate 7 which plate is located within a suitable hopper 8 formed in the platform 4 and provided with attaching flanges 9 by means of which the plate is connected to the platform.
The crushing plate 7 is provided with spirally cut grooves 10, which grooves extend entirely through the plate and are comparatively wide at the top of the plate and comparatively narrow at the bottom. The left wall 11 of each groove is inclined slightly toward the left from top to bottom, while the right wall 12 of, each of the grooves is inclined at a considerably greater angle to the left from top tobottom.
The crushing head 13 is cylindrical in form and of such diameter as tofit within the cylindrical portion 5 and is provided with the spirally cut grooves 14:, oppositely disposed to the grooves in the crushing plate, that is the grooves 14 are inclined to the right from top to bottom of the head. A horizontally c disposed extension 15 communicates with the lower extremity of each groove 14: and extends to the right to a point adjacent the next groove 14 terminating in the downwardly and forwardly inclined edge 16.
The head 13 is provided with a central bore lTthrough which the vertical shaft 18 is located, said head being fixedly mounted upon the shaft by any usualand'well known means such as set screws 19. The shaft 18 is journaled in abearing 2 formed in the cross bar 3 and in a bearing 21 formed in the crushing plate 7 andis provided neariits upper end with a beveled gear 22 which meshes with a beveled pinion 23 mounted upon the horizontally disposed shaft 24, which shaft is j ournaled in suitable bearings 25 and 26 located in the frame, a pulley 27 being fixed upon said shaft and connected by means of the belt, 28 with the pulley 29 upon which is mounted a handle 30 by means of which the pulley 29 may be rotated by hand. If it is desired to drive the crusher by power a pulley 31 may be fixed upon the shaftQL and connected'by means of the belt 32 with a pulley 33 upon the shaft of the motor 3d, the motor being mounted upon a suitable bracket 35 carried by the adjacent upright 2.
A vertical shaft 37 is journaled in a bearing 38 provided in the platform 4, the upper end of said shaft being screw threaded as at 39 and mounted within a threaded aperture d0 formed in the cross bar 3. A gear ll is slidably keyed upon the shaft 37 in any well known manner and is held against vertical movement thereon by means of the brackets 32 and 33 which are mounted upon the bracket 44 which bracket is secured to the platform 4. A plunger 45 is mounted upon the lower end of the shaft 37.
The gear etl meshes with a similar gear d6 mounted upon the countershaft l? which is journaled in suitable bearings 48 and 49 in the cross bar 3 and platform l respectively, a beveled gear 50 being fixed upon said shaft and meshing with a beveled gear 51 mounted upon a horizontal shaft 52 journaled in a bearing 53 provided in the adj acent upright, a peripherally perforated disk 5% being fixed upon said shaft and arranged to be rotated by means of a handle 55 which is successively inserted in the apertures 56 formed in the disk.
A trough 57 is placed upon the table 1, said trough being provided with a drain opening 58 at one end. A crib 59 is placed within the trough 57 and arranged to receive the crushed fruit. In operating the device the fruit is first placed in the hopper 5 and the head 13 is rotated in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. l crushing the fruit between the rotating head and the inner wall of the hopper and feeding the crushed fruit downwardly through the spiral grooves 14; and rearwardly through the extensions thereof further crushing the fruit and forcing it through the spiral grooves 10 in the crushing plate, further crushing the fruit as it is ejected from the restricted lower ends of the grooves 10.
By the peculiar disposition of the grooves in the rotating crushing head and the crushing plate with which said head cooperates, it has been found that very satisfactory results may be obtained in the crushing of the fruit. The fruit being first fed into the up per end of the hopper 5 is initially crushed between the rotating crushing head and the inner wall of the hopper and at the same time is fed downwardly through the downward and rearwardly disposed grooves l t in the cutting head and into the reduced rearwardly disposed horizontal extensions 15 of said grooves being further crushed as it is forced into said extensions and between the crushing plate and the crushing head at these points. The crushed fruit is then conveyed downwardly through the forwardly inclined grooves 11 in the crushing plate which facilitate the feeding of the fruit therethrougln The fruit being thus forced through he downwardly tapered grooves. in the crushing plate are crushed to the proper degree as they emerge from the crushing plate.
The crushed fruit is deposited in the crib 59 as it emerges from the crushing plate, the juice of the fruit passing through the apertures in the crib and-into the trough 5'? from which it drains through the drain opening 58 into any suitable receptacle which may be provided for the purpose.
The press being in the raised position as shown in Fig. 1, the trough containing the crib is then moved to a point beneath the press and the handle 55 is operated to bring the power of the press to bear upon the pomace, the liquid being forced through the openings in the crib from whence it is discharged through the drain aperture58 of the trough.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical hopper, a rotatable cylindrical crushing head located in the hopper and provided in its periphery with downwardly and rearwardly disposed grooves, and a crushing plate connected to the lower end of said hopper and engaging the lower end of the crushing head and provided with grooves oppositely disposed to the grooves in the crushing head.
2. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical hopper, a rotata ble cylindrical crushing head located in the hopper and provided in its periphery with downwardly and rearwardly disposed grooves, and a crushing plate connected to the lower end of said hopper and engaging the lower end of the crushing head and provided with downwardly tapered grooves oppositely disposed to the grooves in the crushing head.
3. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical hopper, a rotatable cylindrical crushing head located in the hopper and provided in its periphery with downwardly and rearwardly disposed grooves having rearwardly disposed horizontal extensions at their lower extremities and a crushing plate connected to the lower end of the hopper and engaging the lower end of the crushing head and provided with grooves oppositely disposed to the grooves in the crushing head.
