.' GALLEY-QAGE. I
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application filed February 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,53
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH W. ScHILLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Galley-Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to adjustable gages or squares for use in connection with a printers galley.
Knowing that somewhat similar devices are old in the art the objects sought relate particularly to the novel structure substantially as hereinafter described, and principal among which is that of combining an adj ustable gage or squaring member with a carrying member upon which graduations are indicated by which to uniformly regulate the gage, this combination being bodily adjustable to or from the common printers galley.
Still another object is to provide such a combination having means whereby the carrying member may be allowed to remain intact with the galley and the gage readily removable to or from such means.
Other objects and advantages of the peculiar structure will appear in the further description of the invention.
In the inclosed drawings forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a galley having my improved gage attached thereto in operative position, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
1 represents a common printers galley having the two usual side walls 2-2 and the end wall 3 and in which type is set up and grouped in the usual manner.
The attachable mechanism comprises a rectangularly shaped supporting member or rod 4 which is of the same height as the side 2 of the galley and preferably approximately the same size. This member is made attachable to the side 2 of the galley by the L-shaped lugs 5 fixed one adjacent each end of the member 4. Screws 6 are mounted within the lugs 5 and are designed to impinge against the outer face of the s1de 2 when the member 4 is fixed in place with1n the galley.
Longitudinally the member 4 and ad acent the inner edge thereof is a rectangular groove or slot 7 into which slot the downthe gage by a plurality of suitable screws 11.
Centrally of the base 10 of the gage is mounted a hooked adjusting screw 12, the hooked end 13 of which extends upwardly through a notch in the plate 8 and reaches over and into the slot 7 within the member 4 and in line with the downwardly turned edge of the plate 8. This bolt has mounted upon the screw threaded innermost end thereof an adjusting thumb nut 14 which when screwed on to the bolt 12 will clamp the base 10 of the gage tightly against the inner face of the holding member 4. I have shown an expansive spiral spring at 15 which surrounds the horizontal portion of the bolt 12 and impinges against a suitable shoulder in the hole in which the bolt is mounted to normally retain the hook in its outermost extended position, ready for con- IXenient engagement with the holding mem- By this arrangement it is evident that on slacking the nut 14 the gage may be readily slid from one end of the holding member to the other or may be entirely removed from said member by simply lifting it from such engagement.
On the upper face of the holding member 4 I have shown numbered graduations as at 16, which represent printershpicas the use of which in connection with the gage is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a galley of the character described, of a single piece supporting member having pica graduations thereupon, clamping lugs thereupon for securely fixing same rigidly against one side of the galley, a longitudinally disposed slot in the upper face of the supporting member and a gage vertically removable and slidably mounted upon the upper face of the supporting member and cooperatively engage-able with said slot.
2. The combination with a galley of the character described, of a single piece supporting member having pica graduations thereupon, clamping lugs thereupon for securely fixing same rigidly against one side of the galley, and .an adjustable gage carried by the supporting member, substan tially as described.
3. The combination with a galley of the character described, comprising a supporting member having pica graduations there upon and means for attaching same to the side of the galley, of a slot formed longitudinally the upper face of the supporting member, a gage the base of which slidably contacts the face of said member toward the inside of the galley, a plate rigidly fixed t0 the upper face of the said base and engageable within the slot in the supporting memably engaged within the slot in the supporting member, substantially as and for the purpose described. 7
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in-the-presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH W. SCHILLA.
