This invention relates to a running gear for wagons and automobiles and the object of the invention. is the imp'rovementof the construction of a running gear which will make it, possible to. turn a wagon in a short or small space, and which gear will remove the strain or jar oif horses when the wheels are passing over rough or uneven ground. I With this and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointedout in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings by numerals,

1 designates the axles upon the ends of which are journaled the wheels 2. The hound frames 3 are positioned above the axles and between the frames is the coupling pole 4.

Each hound frame comprises curved end portions 5 integral at their ends with inwardly-extending central portions 6 and 7. The rear central portions 7 are bent at 8 to form parallel vertical portions 9 and 10. The outer end of portion 9 terminates in an overlapping horizontal portion 11 that rests u on the coupling pole 4 (Figs.

is to be understood; that both ends of my running gear are similarly constructed and hence it' is onlyjnecessary to specifically describe one end. Further, the tongue can be attached to either end and I make no claim for the tongue attachment, not shown. It is also to be understood that if the wagon should be mired, the tongue or drawing means can be removed from one end and attached to the" other end andthereby, in many cases-,quickly remove the wagon from its mired condition.

EXtGIlCllIl into the aperture 21 are threaded draw bolts 24; each draw bolt is provided with an outer hooked end 25 to which end is attached a chain 26; there are two chains used in my running gear,cross each other, so that when the axle that may be used as a front axle is turned in one direction, proper turning of the. other or rear axle will be caused, to turn' the wagon in a short space; furthermore, these chains prevent the axles from wabbling or unduly swinging, relieving considerable strain off the horses.

Each draw bolt 24 is threaded into the aperture 20 of the lug 18, and this keeps the draw bolt in position upon the axle, and at the same time locks thebearing plate 17 upon the axle under the hound frame; the apertured lug performs two functions, to wit: the anchoring means for the bearing plate and thereceiving means for the draw bolt. 7 i

In the foregoing description I have described the preferred form of my invention, but in the manufacture of the same on a large scale, certain minor alterations or "changes may be found desirable by one tending central portions, some of said central portions being bent at their inner ends and producing parallel portions, one of said parallel portions having an integral flat por tion, filling pieces between said parallel portions and under said fiat portion, means fastening said flat and parallel portions to said hound frame and filling pieces, a bolster resting upon each against the outer ends of the filling pieces, and a coupling pole positioned between the filling pieces and the parallel portions of the hound frames.

In a running gear, the combination of axles, each axle provided with a pair of elongated pockets formedin its upper face and with transverse apertures intersecting said pockets, bearing plates resting'upon each'axle, each bearing plate provided with a depending lug extending into the pocket of each axle, said lug provided with a threaded aperture registering with the intersecting aperture of the axle, each bearing plate provided at one end with concentric ends of'the draw bolts.
