Be it known that I, FRANK S. REOE, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Joints for Metallic Struo tures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to metallic structures, and particularly to a foldable joint adapted to be used in metallic'structures or various kinds to form a connection between one member and a member normally disposed at right angles thereto but adapted to be turned down into parallel relation to the first named member, such a :toldable joint being used in the crib illustrated in my pending application, filed May 11, 1918, Serial No. 233,867.
In the crib structure which forms the subject matter of my application above referred to, there is a supporting truck and a crib body. The supporting truck is provided with horizontally extending members and with vertical members, and the crib body is disposed between said vertically extending members and is adjustable with relation thereto. It is necessary for practical considerations of packing, transportation,
etc, that these vertical members shall be so connected to the longitudinal members of the truck that the vertical members ma be turned down into parallel relation thereto, or when the crib is in use, turned up into perpendicular relation thereto and held firmly against any chance of accidental movement out of its relation.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a joint so formed that normally the two parts will be held firmly in right angular relation without chance of accidental movement, but which joint will permit the parts to be turned into parallel relation.
A further object is to provide a very simple construction of this character which may be applied to a large variety of structures, not only in the construction of furniture, but in the construction of metallic buildings framework, etc.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 illustrates in perspective a portion of a crib structure with my invention applied thereto;

Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my crib structure as illustrated in Fig. 1 includes a transversely extending axle beam it having wheels B, and that disposed upon this axle beam are longitudinally extending members 10, these members ll) being attached to the axle beam in any suitable manner. The member 10 is preferably made of angle iron, the member being illustrated as being widened at one end to form a web 11, and formed with upwardly extending flanges 12. The web 11 at its extremity is cut away from the flanges 12, and this web is bent upward at right angles to the main portion of the web, as at 14c, and the extremities 15 of the flanges 12 are inwardly turned against this upwardly bent portion of the web.
The vertical member 16 is longitudinally slotted for the passage of set screws holding the crib body in adjustedposition upon said vertical members when these vertical nembers are in use, and the lower end of the vertical member is formed to provide a bea" 17 embracing a pintle 18 engag d at its ends with the flange 12. Thus, this member 16 is hingedly connected to the member 10 and specifically to the web 11 so that it may be turned down into parallel relation thereto or turned up into a right angular relation.
For the purpose of holding this member 16 at right angles to the member 10, I provide a slidable collar 19 carried by the member 16 which, when shifted downward, embraces the upwardly extending portion 14 and the lower end of the member 16 and holds the member 16 locked to the upwardly extending portion 14. When it is desired to turn the members 16 and 10 into parallel relation, this sleeve is shifted so as to release its engagement with the angular end 14 and then th members may be turned into parallel relation.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show another form of the invention wherein the member 10 has a relatively widened end web 11 formed with a plurality of perforations 20, the member 7 10" being substantially the same as the member 10 and being formed with an upwardly extending end portion 145 and the lip '15. The vertical member 16 at its lower end is formed with angularly bent tongues 21 which are adapted to enter the perforations 20, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and which provide a detachable hinge joint between the member 16 and member 10. On the member 16 is the collar 19 which operates in the same manner as the collar 15). In this last case, the two parts may either be completely detached from each other or they may be sim ply turned down into parallel relation formed by the engagement of the tongues 21 through the slots 20; T his construction permits the easy connection of the two elements or members to each other and their ready disengagement from each other.

I have found that a oint formed in this manner is very rigid and strong, that it is not liable to accidental disengagement between the parts, and at the same time per mits the parts to be folded so that the entire crib or other structure may be folded into compact form for shipment or packing.
I claim 1. A structure having therein a longitudlnal member having a web having an angularly extenoed terminal portion, a secable into a position to embrace and engage around said second named member and the angles to the body of the web and the flaw over the outer face of the terminal member,
and a second member hingedly connected to the first member at a point adjacent said terminal portion, a collar on the second named member engagable around said member and the terminal portion in one position of the collar to hold the two parts in right angular relation.
3. In a structure of the character described, a member having a web and lateral flanges, the extremity of the web being separated from the flanges and turned at right being bent over the outer face or the wardly turned extremity of the web, said web adjacent the angularly bent extremity being formed with perforations, and a sec ond member having angularly extending tongues at one end, these tongues being disposed through the perforations in the web whereby to form a hinge joint between the members, and a collar slidably mounted upon the second member and shiftable into position to embrace the second named member and said angularly bent extremity of the first named member.
4. A structure of the character described comprising one member having a web, the terminal end of the web being extended at right angles to the main portion of the web, and a second member having rocking engagement with the first named member at a point adjacent said terminal portion whereby the two members may be turned into parallel relation or'into angular relation with one of said members abuttin against said terminal portion, and means for detachably holding the members in said angular relation.
