ARRANGEMENT 0F LEADS FOR DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHTNES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be. it known that we, RUDoLF E. HELL- MUNI), a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and BENJAMIN S. Moonn, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Wilkinsbnrg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Arrangement of Leads for Dynamo-Electric Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
()ur invention relates to an arrangement of collector leads for the rotatable members of dynamo-electric machines and ithas for its object to provide novel means for preventing displacement and chafing of the leads under the influence of centrifugal force during the operation of the machine.
I t has heretoforebeen proposed to locate collector leads within the shaft of a rotatable member but considerable difliculty has been encountered in properly supporting the portions of the leads that extend between the outer surface of the shaft and the windings to which the leads are connected. It has also been found that the vibration of the leads within the shaft causes injury to the insulation thereof.
According to our present. invention, we provide means for spacing apart and individually supporting each lead at the point where it leaves the shaft and further means for protecting the exposed portions of the leads against injury. We also propose to embed the portions of the leads that are located within the shaft in a solid mass of insulating material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the rotating member of a dynamo-electric machine embodying our invention;

A plurality of collector leads? extend through the opening 4 and the passages 5 and 6, respectively, and project beyond the spider 2 to a point below the overhanging end portions of the winding 8 that is carried by the core member l.
The portions of the leads 7 that are located within the opening 4 are embedded in a mass of insulating material 9 that is surrounded by a tube 10 which is preferably composed of tough and fibrous insulating material. In applying the insulating material 9 to the leads 7, the tube 10 is first slipped over the leads 7, with the portions that are to be located within the passages 5 and 6 projecting beyond the ends of the tube 10. Insulating material 9, preferably in the form of bakelite or other similar material in a powdered or fusible condition is then placed in the tube 10 until it fills all the space between the leads and it is changed into a compact mass by the application of heat and pressure. The projecting portions of the leads 7 are then pulled through the and 6 until the end of the tube 10 reaches the end of the opening4. We prefer that the tube 10 shall fit rather loosely within the opening ber 11 further comprises supporting lugs 14 that are secured to the spider 2 by means of studs 15 in threaded engagement with openings 16 that are provided in the spider, as best shown in Fig. 2. The leads 7 are respectively connected to the end connections 17 of the winding 8 by terminal members 18. The projecting portions of the leads 7 are protected by a shield member 19 that comprises a U-shaped portion 20 that embraces the leads 7 and is provided with oppositely disposed wing portions 21 that are secured to the spider 2 by means of nuts 22 eoacting with the studs 15. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a shaft, a spider mounted thereon and provided with openings there in, a core carried by the spider and provided with a winding having overhanging end portions, of a plurality of leads'for the winding extending through the shaft and openings in the spider and projecting beyond the end of the core, and supporting members for "the leads mounted at the ends of said openings and comprising a plurality oi arms disposed at an angle to each other and extending parallel to said leads and means comprising stranded insulating material for binding said leads to said arms.
