Description

C. C. BAGNELL.
PULLING DRUM.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.27,19|9.
1,351,887, PawIitedSept. 7,1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER C. BAGNELL, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO MA I OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
PULLING-DRUM.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed August 27, 1919. Serial No. 320,093.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. BAG- NELL, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulling-Drums, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pulling drums and has special reference to a manually operated drum for pulling small stumps or the' like or one which may be conveniently carried about for use in an automobile in case of its requiring such service.
The principal object is to provide a sim ple and inexpensive device of this character.
Another object is to provide one of few and readily assembled parts.
Other objects and advantages of the novel construction will appear in the further description thereof.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which like reference characters represent like parts:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete device in operation, and
Fig. 2 is a view of the four unassembled parts of the device.
1 represents -a large U-shaped clevis or bridle made of metal and having an eye 2 therein through which any desired form of hold-fast means may be engaged, for example the line 3. In the free ends 4 of the clevis are formed two round concentric holes for the reception of the drum shaft, and 5 represents the pulling drum which when in operative position is rotatable intermediate of the free ends 44: of the clevis.
The shaft which supports the drum 5 is composed of two separate parts the lower portion 6 of which is round and has a pointed extension 7 formed integral therewith, there being a shoulder 8 formed at the of the drum, the lower half of the bore of the drum being round to accommodate that portion of the shaft indicated at 6. It is evident that being squared as at 10, segmental shaped corners are formed on the section 9 at 11 and said corners act as a stop when the section-is applied to the drum with the squared portion thereof inserted therein. This results in the drum being rotatably mounted on the shaft within the ends 4 of the clevis.
The end of the shaft-section 9 opposite to that which is squared is provided with a transverse tapered ferrule or socket 14, the same being preferably formed integral with .the shaft and which provides convenient means for the reception of the sharpened end of a hand-spike, as indicated at 12 for the rotation of the drum.
I have shown at 13 an extension or lug on i one head of the drum 5 about which the end vwhen carried about in an automobile.
.Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described a holding clevis, a drum rotatably mounted intermediate of the arms of the clevis, a shaft upon which the drum is mounted composed of two separate sections one of which being stationary and supporting the clevis and the other being rotatable and actuating the drum and means for rotating the last mentioned portion of the shaft.
2. In combination, a U-shaped holding clevis, a winding drum intermediate of the spaced arms of the clevis, a two-part shaft j ournaled within the arms of the clevis and supporting the drum, one of said parts for rotating the drum and the other of said parts supporting the clevis it being sharpened for such purpose, means for holding the device laterally against the draft of the drum when pulling and means for manually rotating the drum.
3. The combination with a device of the RY H. BAGNELL,
ported intermediate. of the spaced arms of In' testimony whereof I hereunto affix my character described comprisirig a holding to the drum in such a manner as to rotate clevls, and a wlndlng drum rotatably supsame, substantlally as deserlbed. 10
' h the clevis, of a two-part shaft supporting signature in the gresence eftw o Witnesses.
said drum, the lower part of said shaft be- CHRIST ing pointed and rotatably supporting verti- Witnesses: cally both the elevis and the drum, and the \V. H. DENHAM,
PHER G. BAGNELL.
upperportion' of said shaft being attached S. GEO. STEVENS.
