SEWING-MACHINE LOOP-TAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed April 24, 1918. Serial No. 230,407.
' Loop-Talrers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom a in drawin -s.
- This invention relates toimprovements in sewing machine loop-takers and more particularly to loop-takers adapted to cast needle-thread loops around a thread-case having a limited movement upon its own axis. v r
The invention has for its primary object to simplify and improve the constructions heretofore employed to effect an unobstructed passage for the needle-thread loop in itstravel around the thread-case, in so far as said needle-thread would meet with interference or resistance by the means'used for limiting the rotation of said case.
In the present construction, the threadcase is as usual provided with a stop-lug adapted to enter a notch formed in a lug on the under side of the throat-plate and is fur ther provided with a circumferential rib seated in anannular racewavin the body or the loop-taker. The thread-case is bodily moved laterally by positioning the annular raceway eccentrically to the axis of the loop taker. The consequent motion of: the threadcase is controlled by means of a cam-element projecting therefrom and intermittently in sliding contact with a cam-surface on a stationary cam-lug projecting from the throatplate. The'resulting action is such that the needle-thread loop obtains a tree passage past the opposite sides of the stop-lug and also past the controlling cam-surfaces.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional front side elevation of a sewing machine embodying the present improvement. Fig. 2 is aplan view 01": the
throat-plate and the loop-taker and shows the stop-lug in the position it attains tor the passage of one limb or" the needle thread loop immediately after the taking of the loop by the loop-taken] Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but with the stop-lug contacting with the opposite side of its coacting notch to provide a passage for the limb oi the loop and permit drawing up of the loop preliminary to setting the stitch. Fig. 6L is a top-plan view of the loop-taker with the thread-case removed and with the raceway cover partly swung out of position to better show the eccentric raceway. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line A-A. of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the throat-plate and coacting stop-elements.
Referring to the drawings, the sewing machine is as usual constructed with a base 1 supporting the overhanging bracket-arm 2 terminating inthe head 3. Journaled in bearings provided in the arm 2 is the main or driving shaft l adapted, in the usual manner, to actuate the needle-bar 5, journaled for vertical reciprocation in suitable bearings provided in the head 3 and carrying the needle The shaft 4 has driving connections with a shaft 7, journaled in bearings provided in the base 1 and adapted in a well known manner to impart to the vertical loop-taker shaft 8 a plurality of rotations to one of the main-shaft. Carried by the loop-taker shaft 8 is the body 9 oi the loop-taker having a loop-seizing beak 10. The cylindricalthread-case 11 is provided with a peripheral bearing rib 12 seated in an annular raceway 13 formed in the body of the loop-taker eccentrically to the axis thereof. In order to permit insertion and removal of the thread-case a cover 14: forming a portion of the upper wall of the raceway is secured by means of screws, as 15, to the loop-taker,
Rotation of the thread-case 11 upon its own axis is limited by the provision thereon of a cam-element in the form of a stop-lug 1" adapted to contact with either of the walls 1' and 18 of a stop element in the form of notch provided in a lug 19 projecting from the under side or" the throatplate 20. The thread-case 11 is further provided with a cam-element 21 adapted to intermittently Contact with a cam-surface 22 formed on a lug 23 projecting from the throat-plate.
In operation the loop -taker beak 1O the'loop of thread presented by the needle 6 and casts it around the thread-case ll in the usual manner. The normal tendency of the stop-lug 16 owing to the frictional contact between the thread-case and the loopaker is to aontact with the wall 18 on the lug it. After the seizing oi" 'the loop by the loop-taker, it is necessary for the limb of the loop cast around the outer 2 I p i 1,351,869
face of the thread-case to pass hetweentho stop-lug l6 and the Wall-1S. In order to facilitate its passage the eccentric raceway at mechanism in'ciuding a o, r of said thread-case in opposite direct'ons upon its own axis,
a are this time carries the thread-case laterally to cause the cam-element 21 tocontact-with the cam-surface 22 and slightly-osciliate the thread-case oppositely to the direction of rotation of the loop-taker. This position is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. As the loop is drawn up by the usual take-up 2-lit is necessary for it to pass between the cam-element 21 and the cam surlace 22, and also between-the stop-lug 16 and the Wall 17. Before the limb of the loop reaches the cam-element 21, the eccentric raceway carri'es thethread-caselaterally to open'a pas-' sage for the loop, the thread-case at time following its normal tendency to rotate With'tie looptal:er until the stop-lug- "lhis' position 1s contacts with the wall 18. illustrator in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The present improvement therefore pro vides" simple and eifectiye means ob 'iating the necessi y of the needle-thread loop to at any time force a passageway past either side of the stop-element usually employed tor limit-in rotation of the threadcase upon its own Having thus set torththenature of the invention, What I claim herein is- V 1. In a sewing machine, a stitch-forming niechanisnrincluding a reciprocating needle,a loop-taker, a thread-case mounted in said loop-taker and around Which said loop-taker isadapted to cast a loop of needle-thread, a stop-element for limiting the rotation of said thread-case upon its own ELXlS, a cam-element upon said thread-case, a c acting cam-surface, and means for ineving said thread-case axis laterally to rende said cam ele nent and care-- urface active to oscillate the thread-case and thereby pro "lClQ 'a free passage for the needlethread loop past said stop-element.
5. In a sewing machine, mechanism including 'a TSUl dle, a rotary l oopt-aher, mounted in said lOOP-tiil r and eccentrically to the axis of rotation of the latter, a stop-element for limiting rotation of said thread-case upon its own axis, and including the ;eccentric mounting of the thread-case in saidlooptaker for providing a free passage past said stop-eleinent for a thread-case by said loop-taker.
6. In a sewingmachine, astitch-forniing mechanism including a reciprocating needle, a rotary loop-taker hav ng an ecccn trio raceway, a thread-case provided with a peripheral bearing rib journaled in said raceway, a stop-lug upon said'thread-case, a throat-plate provided with a notch adapted to be entered by said stop-lug for limiting rotation'of said thread-case upon its own axis, a cam-element upon said threadcase and stationary cam-surface adapted to coact with said cam-element to provide free passage for a loop of needlethread past said stop-element.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
