Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed November 14, 1919. Serial No. 337,924,
To all yl1/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB G. GERHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredericksburg, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AirPumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in air pumps, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the inliating of pneumatic bodies, such as automobile tires or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying two relatively movable members coacting in a manner whereby the pump is double acting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two tubular members telescoping one within the other, and wherein one of said members is mounted for rectilinear movement with respect to the other, and wherein said members coact in a manner to discharge a substantially constant flow of air under pressure during a working operation of the pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved pump of this general character embodying two telesco iically coacting members movable one with respect to the other, and wherein air, under pressure, is discharged from one of the members upon relative movement of the members in either direction.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved pump. of this general character embodying a tubular member or cylinder coacting with a piston n and wherein the piston is arranged therein, provided with means movable therewith for lubrication.
rI`he invention consists in the details of construction and in theA combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved air pump, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section of a pump constructed in accordance with an embodi ment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation illustrating the lubricating means carried by the piston working within the inner tubular member or cylinder, and,
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of one of the parts comprised in the lubricating means, particularly illustrated in Fig. 2.
- As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes an elongated tubular member or cylinder of brass or other material, and which has one end portion closed by a `plug l, said plug being herein shown as being partly threaded within an end portion of the barrel or cylinder B. The outer end portion of the plug 1 is provided with an extension 2, herein disclosed. as threaded within a pocket 8, formed in a base member M. AThe inner end of the extension 2 is defined by an outstanding shoulder 4 for limiting` .he extent of insertion of the extension 2 within the pocket 3, so that'the maintenance of a chamber a at the inner end of the pocket is assured. The plug 3 has disposed therethrough substantially axially, a restricted port In communication with the chamber' a is the bore 6 of an outstanding nipple 7. Secured to the nipple T in any desired manner is an end portion of a ilexible tubing S, adapted to be suitably engaged with an inflating valve of a pneumatic tire, or to be directed to any suitable place of delivery.
C denotes a second tubular member or cylinder of desired length, and preferably of brass. The member or cylinder C has its internal diameter greater than the maj or diameter of the member or cylinder B. Suitably fixed within one end portion of the member or cylinder il is collar 5l', provided with an internal shoulder 10. The internal surface of the collar 9 in advance or outwardly of the shoulder 10 is screw threaded to permit engagement therewith of an end portion of a guide sleeve 11. rfhe sleeve l'l entends a material distance outwardly from the member or cylinder C.
Extending within the incml er or cylinder C and through the sleeve l1 is the member plied position.
r cylinder B, liereinbetore referred to, said sleeve closely fitting the member or cylinder B, and operating Vto hold the member' or cylinders B and C against relative lateral movement when the same are in extended relation one with respect to the other.
Also surrounding the member or cylinder B, and having close contact therewith is an annular or cylii'idrical packing 12 of liber, leather or other suitable material. Cne end portion of the packing 12 is provided with the outstanding continuous flange 1e', which is engaged between the shoulder andthe adjacent-end of the sleeve 11, whereby said packing 12 is effectively maintained in aprlfhe packing 12 is or' a length to extend inwardly oi' the member or cylinder C, a decided distance beyond the upper face of theV collar 9. Y The packing 12 operates to prevent leakage between the niemeer or cylinderB and the collar 9,' and f particularly when the member or cylinder i P, to be hereinafter more particularly re1 Y C Vis on its compression stroke as the pres .sure o'l the air within the member orcylinder and surrounding the member `or `cylinder B, will torce the extended end portion ot the packing 12 in close engagement with the member or cylinder B.
The opposite end portion ot themember ercylinder C has threadedor otherwise secured thereto a perforated cap 15. Secured,
as at 16, to the axial center of the cap 15 is a rod 17. rllhe rod 17 extends inwardly of the member or cylinder C, and within the member or cylinder B, and the inner end'portion of said i'od 17 has Secured thereto a piston erred to. I
rlhrcaded to, or otherwise secured around the end portion of the member or cylinder B, remote 'from the plug 1, is a sleeve 18, ei;- tending outwardly and beyond the acjacent end'oil the member or cylinder C. The inner endjof the sleeve 18 is dened by an outstanding continuous flange 19, and engaging the outer iace ot said iiange 19 is an inwardly facing cup washer 20ct' leather or other suitable material. Vlhe cup washer 20 is clamped to the `flange 19 by the nut 21 threaded upon the sleeve 1S, as is clearly Aillustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying' .dra-wings.
Extending within the adjacent end por-V tion or' the member or cylinder 9 is an aunular membei' 22, having its outer end defined b an outstanding annular fiance 23V engaging the adjacent end ol the member or cylinder B. The rod 17 extends through the member 22. and extending within the bore oit the niember 22 is a packing member 2&1. having its outer portion defined by an outstanding continuous flange 25V overlying the adjacent end of the member 22 and the flange 23 thereof. The packing member 2st is clamped te the l.directed hand grasps S5, whereby the Surrounding the rod 17' member 22 and maintained in tion by the plug 26,'tlirez'ided in applied posi A. L the outer end portion 01"' the sleeve 18. rlhe packing memplate 27 is a cup washer 28, of leather or the like.
rlhe cup washer 28 may be held in applied position in any desired manner, but it preferred that the structure be employed which is particularly illustrated Fig. 2 of the drawings.- A plate 29 surrounds the the cup vasher 28. ,A second plat 30 surrounds the rod 17 and is provided with an inwardly directed hub 31 fFor maintaining the .plates 29 and 30m spaced relation, The marginal portion ot the plate 30 is deiined by an inwardly directed dange 32 bridgi the space between the plates 29 and 30, l.
lprovided with the spaced recesses or slots' 33. Threaded upon the rod 17 is another plate 34;, Awhich operates to maintain 'the plates 29 andfSO in assembled relation, and y to clamp the cup washer 28 in working position. T he plate 3-1 is ot a diameter in e3:- cess of the plate 30 with which it coacts, l is of a major diameter slightly less than internal diameter of the'member or cylinder i3. lt is also preferred that the edge of the plate 311 be slightly tapered in a direction toward the cup washer 2S. lt is also to be noted that the plate 34 is of a diameter to lunderlie the tree marginal edge ot the cup washer 28, and in close proximity thereto.
The member or cylinder B, at a point inr mediately adjacent the annular member 22 is provided with the ports 35 alici-ding communication between the interior thereof, and the interior of the 'member ot cylinder C. y
rllhe end portion of the member or cylinder C, at a point preferably closely adjacent the cap 15 is provided withthe oppositely linder or member C may be manually operated to reciprocate the Same'with respect to the member or cylinder B.
Carried by the outer tace ot the plug 26 is a buffer 37 herein disclosed as a coil spring encircling the rodY 17. The butler `37 coacts with the cap 15 upon undue moyerod 17 and bears against the outer tace or Y this second movement .of the cylinder orV member G a fresh supply of air is being admitted therein inwardly of the cup washer 28, said air entering through the openings or perforations 15in the cap 15, and readily passing the cup washer 19 owing to the flexibility thereof.
During a Working operation it is found of utmost importance that provision be made for lubricating the member'of cylinder C and the piston P coacting therewith,
, as the heat generated thereby is such as to from dropping directly otherwise affect the efciency of the device.
.The requisite lubrication is obtained by arranging between the plates 29 and 30 and inwardly of the flange 32, a case 38 of lubricant, which liquelies under heat. The lubricant asit liquefies passes through the slotsV or recesses 33, and engages the cup washer 2S. rlhis molten lubricant is prevented through the member er cylinder Bby the plate 34, and which plate also serves bricant to the inner wall of the member or cylinder B. T he tapering edge of the plate is of decided advantage because, after the pump becomes inactive, the molten lubricant congcals, and said tapering edge serves to retain a portion of said congealed lubricant, so that upon further use of the pump, the lubricant is in position to immediately become active.
VThe outer face of the plate 30 is convex,
and the plate 34 at diametrieally opposed points is provided with openings therethrough. By this arrangement the air passes through the openings in the plate 3a and strikes the convex face of the plate 32 and spreads out against the cup washer 2S. The operation just referred to occurs upon the downward or compressing stroke of the piston l), and whereby the efficiency of the pump is materially facilitated. This spreading of the air also facilitates the proper distribution of the lubricant.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an air pump constructed in accordance with my inven-y tiony is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and to deliect the molten lu-l modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
