\ LOPE VICENTE CALDERON, or LA OEIBA. HONDURAS. i
SPUR.-
To all fr0/1.0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LOPE VICENTE CAL- DnRN, a citizen ofthe Republic of I-Ionduras, residing at La Ceiba, Honduras, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to improvements in spurs, and consists in providing a special form of spur in whiclithe rowel may be securely held in the projecting or operative position when desired; but in which it may also be swung to the masked or inoperative position when desired and securely held in place in said position.
The invention is not only intended to apply to ordinary horsemens spurs, but to military spurs. It is well known that. certain riding animals require the spur, and' that with others the use of a spur is frequently not only one of irritation but of danger to the rider; and the object of my present invention is to provide a spur to be used as such only when needed, which may be thrown out of operation entirely when not needed. In the same way the military spur is apt to be very much in the way at social functions, or in the ordinary pursuits of an oicer who is obliged to wear spurs as a part of his uniform, but rarely needs to put the same into actual use.
The invention is intended to provide a practical spur for military purposes also.
My invention will be more fully understood after reference to the accompanying drawings, in'which like parts are indicated by similar reference symbols throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the spur with the rowel in the operative position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view Of the device shown in Fig. l, parts being broken away.
' Fig. 3 is a rear view of the spur with the royel in the masked or inoperative position; anc
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 3, parts being broken away.
v A represents the U-shaped heel piece of the spur adapted to fit over the heel of the wearer, and is provided with a hinge plate B to which the yoke D, carrying the rowel E, is connected by means of the hinge pin C.l
Specification of Letters Patent. Pittlitd Aug. 31, 1920.
Application ied April 2e, 1920.
Serial No. 376,817.
The rowel E is journaled in the yoke D in the usual way, as by means of a pin F.
G represents the' U-shaped guard plate which is hinged, as at g, to the sides of the heel piece A, and is provided with a notch go adapted to` engage the-portion cl of the yoke D, as shown most clearly in Figs. l and 3. When the rowel is in the operative position the yoke D is swung out to the position shown in Figs. l and 2, and the notch go engages the part d of the said yoke and holds the yoke firmly in place with the rowel projecting and ready for use. When it is desired to mask the .rowel the guard plate G is lifted far enough to clear the notch go from the upper edge al of the` yoke D, and the said yoke is swung about its pivot to the right or left, and the guard plate G is swung down again, masking the rowel, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The parts should be so arranged that the guard plate` will not pass down below the rowel when in the position shown in Figs. 3` and 4, and this may be accomplished by having the parts so adjusted as to hold in frictional engagement; but if a positive stop is desired vsuch a stop may be provided, as at h, see Fig. 1. Such a stop, however, will ordinarily not be necessary.
The heel plate A may be attached to the foot of the wearer in any convenient way, as by means of the usual straps or chains, not shown, connected to the studs I shown in Fig. 1.
It will 'be obvious that the herein described construction may be varied in certain details which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention; and I do not mean to limit the invention to such details except as particularly pointed out in the claims.
Having thu-s described my invention what I cla-im and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is r.
l. In. a spur the combination with a U- shaped heel plate adapted to engage the heel of the wearer, of a hinge plate secured to the rear thereof, a yoke hinged to said hinge plate, a rowel journaled in saidyoke, and a guard plate pivoted to the exterior of said heel plate-and adapted to lock said hinged yoke in the-open or closed position. 2. In a spur the combination with a U- shaped heel plate adapted to engage the heel of the wearer, of a hinge plate secured to the rear thereof, a yoke hinged to said hinge plate, a rowel Journaled in said yoke, and a U-shaped guard plate hinged to said heel plate and provided with a centrally disposed notch adapted to engage the upper edge of said yoke and to lock the same in the distended position, the said yoke and rowel being adapted to fit snugly inside of said guard plate when the said yoke is swung laterally to the closed position.
3. In a spur the combination with a U- shaped heel'plate adapted to engage the heel of the wearer, of a hinge platev secured to the rear thereof a oke hinged to said hinge 7 y t) D of the wearer, of a hinge plate secured to the rear thereof, a yoke hinged to said hinge plate, af rowel journaled in said yoke, and a U-shaped guard plate hinged to said heel plate and provided with a centrally disposed notch adapted to engage the upper edge of said yoke and to lock the same in the distended position, the said yoke and rowel being adapted to fit snugly inside of said guard plate when the said yoke is swung ylaterally to the closed position, and a stop carried by said heel plate to liinit the downward travel of said guard plate.
5. In a spur the combination with a U- shaped heel plate adapted to engage the heel of the wearer, of ayoke pivoted to the rear of said heel plate, a rowel ournaled in said yoke, and a guard plate pivoted to the exterior of said heel plate and adapted to lock said hinged yoke in the open or closed position. Y
6. In a spur the combination with a U- shaped heel plate adapted to engage the heel of the wearer, of a yoke pivoted to the rear of said heel plate, a rowel journaled in said yoke, and a U-shaped guard plate hinged to said heel plate and provided with a eentrally disposed notch adapted Vto engage the upper edge of said yoke and to lock the same in the distended position, thesaid yoke androwel being adapted to fit snugly inside of said guard plate when the said yoke is swung laterally to the closed position.
