. Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toll collecting mechanisms and particularly to mechanisms for collecting entrance feesto places ofentertainment such as moving picture theaters.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a'payas'you enterarrangement in which each person mayhaveI admittance only afterVY having paid his entrance fee, subyis formed an annular ratchet 23, concentric sequent manipulationA of the apparatus serving to release a turn-stile,v dump the fee and register its payment.

The spindle'l't is illustrated as rectangular'in cross section and it is provided with a longitudinalfgroove 2O in each of its faces, that receives the corresponding edge offa wineV 21 of the turnstile. The turns'tile is held normally against rotation to permit of entrance, through the medium of apslidlng detent 25 mounted 1n a U-shaped Aframe 2G within the cashiers vbooth and having the free ends of its sides turned laterally and boltedy against vthe infree longitudinal edges are provided with wear shoes 30,` the forward faces of which are beveled where they successively engage 'the' correspondinglybeveled outer face of the detent finger 29 to slide the detent rearwardly and permit of movement of the wings into position for engagementV in the notch 27.

The detent 25 is held normally projected' intoposition to engage a turnstile wing, through the medium of a helical spring disposed between the inner end of the detent and the bight of the U-shaped frame 26 and through which helical spring there extends the bolt 34 carried by the detent 25 and which extends through and beyond the bight 33 where it is provided with a pair of nuts 35 which when locked one against the other, limit the extent of projection of the detent through the partition 13 and serve to properly position the beveled face of the finger 29 so that it will be properlyY engaged by the wear shoes 30 to effect retrograde movement of the detent.

In order to manually retract the detent when an entrance fee has been paid, the detent is provided with a depending ear36 behind which is engaged the crank 37 of a. shaft 3S mounted in bearings 39 and 40 that depend from the counter 41 that projects into the cashiers booth from the sill of the window opening 42 in the booth partition 13. The shaft 38 is provided with an operating handle 43 that extends above and lto one side of the counter 41 and it will be understood that when this handle is drawn rearwardly, the shaft 3S is rocked and the detent retracted against the action of the spring 32.

The detent mechanism is operated to release the-turnstile only after payment of the entrance fee, which is deposited upon a tray 44 fixed to the shaftY 33 andnormally closing an opening 45 in the counter 41. The opening 45 leads to a coin receptacle 46 mounted upon a foot 47 that depends from the counter supporting bracket 48 and is provided with a door having an ordinary form of lock. vVhen the 'shaft 38 is moved an angular distance to retract the detent and release the turnstile, the tray is tilted so that the coin or coins of admission placed upon it, slide from it to the coin receptacle below.

The shaft 38 vis continued beyond its crank 37 where there is fixed to it a supplemental crank-arm 49 between the terminal ears 50 of which is disposed the lower end of the pull rod 51 of a registering mechanism 52 the operating lever 53 of which is received between the ears 54 at the corresponding end of the rod 51,. The rod 51 is connected with the levers 49 vand 53 through the medium of pivot pinsV 55 and 56 respectively which are headed at one4 end and are each provided at its other end with a pair of perforations to receive a cotter pin 57 and a seal wire 58, respectively.

In use, a person presents himself at the cashiers window 42 and deposits the entrance fee on the tray 44, whether or not change has been made for him on the counter 41. 'lhe cashier then operates the handle 43 to retract the detent, tilt the tray 44 to discharge the coin and operate the registering mechanism to register the receipt of a stipulated fce. When the person has passed into the turnstile and has given initial movement to it, the lever 43 is released and the detent returns to position to again engage and hold the turnstile. y f

To hold the turnstile closed when desired, a locking pin 59 is engaged through perforations 60 and 61 that are formed respectively in the frame 26 and detent 25 and which register when the detent is projected.

By reason of the fact that the ear 36 is in the form of a hook behind which the crank 37 lies, the detent 25 when forced rearwardly as the turnstile engages it, will not rock the shaft 38 and operate the registering mechanism.

Vhat is claimed is l. The combination with a turnstile of a detent for the turnstile, a dumpable coin tray and a single means for retractingthe detent and simultaneously dumping the coin tray.

The combination with a turnstile of a retractible detent for holding the turnstile at times against operation, aV dumpable tray to receive a fee, a-single means for simultaneously retracting vthe detent and dumping the tray and a single means connected with boththe tray and the detent for registering said simultaneous operations.

3. The combination 'with an entrance way, of means for closing the entrance way at times, means for holding theclosure at timesv in operative position, a receiver for coins and a single means having connectionsV for retracting the closure holding means and for shifting of the'coins from the receiver. 4. The combination with an entrance way, of a closure movable into and out of operative relation tothe entrance way, a detent for holding the closure at times operative, a rock shaft, connections between the rock shaft and detent for retracting it, a coin tray carried by the shaft and movable therewith into position when the detent is re-` tracted to dump therefrom coins placed thereon and means for oscillating the rock shaft. l

5. The combination with an entrance way, of a closure movable into and out of'operative relation to the entrance way, a detent ,for holding the closure at times operative,

a rock shaft, connections between the rock shaft andv detent for retracting the latter, a coin tray carried by the shaft and movable therewith into position when theV detent is retracted t0 .dump therefrom coins placed thereon, a registering mechanism connected with the shaft for registering each oscillation of the latter and means for oscillating the rock shaft.
