PRESS-BODY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. Gnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvemenets in Press-Bodies, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as well.
My invention relates to improvements in press bodies, and has for its object the construction of a cast body which is adapted to afford maximum movement for the thrust block, and one that is hollow interiorly, yet suitably shaped to resist the strains and stresses of heavy service.
My improvement is herein explained and shown in connection with a straightening press; the body of which is formed of a hollow casting reinforced in cross section at such points exteriorly andinteriorly. as will best stiffen and strengthen the same against excessive strains, while avoiding any interference with the free operation of the press upon all classes of work.
Specifically, my improvement is embodied in a press body wherein the base and up right are hollowed out in the portions of minimum stress while the front inner wall of the upright is thickened above and below the jaws of the press body and the upper jaw, moreover, is provided with side fillets permitting the thrust block to be elevated to the maximum capacity of the press, while affording extreme stiffness and strength at the upper angle of the jaw. My invention may be explained as thus embodied in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure l is a view in front elevation, of a straightening press constructed in accordance with my invention.

In order that the thrust block 0 carried at the extremity of the screw (Z and operated by the hand wheel (Z or bar d, may have its maximum elevation and movement, within the limits of the press, lateral fillets f are integrally cast at the upper angle of the jaw. These in cooperation with the interior reinforcing member a sufliciently strengthen the press to resist strains equally at the upper and lower angles of the jaw, while interfering in no respect with the travel of the thrust block 0, which may be made of such size and shape, if desired, as will it completely within the upper angle of the press aw. The lower jaw is provided with a relatively larger reinforcing member a", which with the widened or flaring form of the lower portion of the u night, is substantially equal in resistance to the reinforcing members a, f, f. Almost of necessity, the lower jaw or bed portion of the press must be substantially rectangular in vertical section, to afford room at the rear of the bed, but the lower portion of the upright admits of ready extension laterally, so that the extra cross-section of metal may be provided if desired, without the reinforcing member a, but ordinarily I prefer the type shown.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the press body may be made much lighter and yet resist the strains necessarily placed thereon. Moreover, the upper angle of the jaw is left of rectangular form interiorly, not only for the accommodation of the thrust block, but also affords a cylindrical and easily accessible socket for the removable nut e, which is held in position within the upper jaw of the press by the set screw 6.
l lhile I have explained the preferred d position and relation of the reinforcing members, I do not desire to be understood as necessarily restricting my invention thereto, inasmuch as one or more of said membe altered, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described mechanism embodying my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following i 1. A press body integrally formed of a casting hollow in its upright portion and interiorly reinforced transversely approximately in the zones of the upper and lows angles of the press jaw, and exteriorly reinforced integrally at the sides only of the upper angle thereof, whereby adequate working space is aflorded therebetween, substantially as set forth.
2. A press body formed of a hollow castcast at the angle of the upper jaw at a vdistance from each other to afford adequate working space therebetween, and an interror reinforcement cast approximately in the Zone of the bed or lower aw of said press, substantially as set forth.
3. A press body comprising an integral hollow casting affordin a bed and an overhanging upper .jaw; the latter being strengthened by lateral fillets at its angle at a distance from each other to afford adequate working space therebetween, and by an interior reinforcement positioned adjacent to the angle of said upper aw, substantially as set forth.
4. A straightening press comprising a hollow body cast with interior reinforceing having substantially rectangularupper V and lower aws with angular lateral fillets reinforcing theang'le 'of the upper jaw spaced apart from each other, and an interior reinforcing section cast in the zone of the lower jaw, in combination with a traveling member adapted to be elevated substantially into engagement with the upper'j aw between the lateral fillets. ing having exterior lateral reinforcements 6.
