To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roscon C. PATTISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Use in Making Cores or the like, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to apparatus for use in forming molds and cores of the kind used in metal molding.
The objects of the invention are to provide an apparatus of this kind by means of which a core box or pattern can'be rapidly and accurately drawn from a core or mold without requiring the. accuracy and skill which is necessary in withdrawing the core boxes or patterns by-hand; also to provide an apparatus of this kind which rapidly alines the core box or pattern in such a manner that the withdrawing of the parts of-the box or of the pattern can be quickly effected; also to provide an apparatus of this kind which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture; also to improve the construction of apparatus of this kind in other respects hereinafter specified.

Briefly stated, the apparatus shown in the drawings and embodying the invention in cludes a base having a supporting part on which the work, such as a core box with a core, may be placed, and guide portions or tracks on which one or more core box'gripping devices or electromagnets are slidably arranged. These gripping devices or electromagnets are provided withfaces or parts adapted to grip or to be drawn by magnetism into engagement, with corresponding parts, plates ordisks on the core box in such a manner as to aline the core box on the apparatus. The apparatus is hereinafter described more particularly as used in connection with the forming of cores, but it will be un derstood that the apparatus is not limited to such use but may be used for making molds or for analogous purposes.
A represents the base or frame of the apparatus which may be of any desired shape or proportions, that shown having an enlarged intermediate portion preferably provided with raised ribs a on which a plate or board supporting an inverted core box and a core may rest. The base is also provided with longitudinal guide rails or tracks at, those shown forming the edges of a central slot extending lengthwise of the base, and being arranged parallel to the plane of the upper faces of the raised ribs 64. The base is preferably provided with a plurality of connecting members a which connect the two sides of the frame and with feet or legs a" by means of which the apparatus may be supported on a bench or table. A frame or base of any other suitable construction may be employed.
Gripping devices or magnets are slidably arranged on the guide tracks of the base in any suitable manner. In the construction shown these gripping devices have bory portions B provided with base portions 6 having slots or guide parts adapted to co operate with the guide rails or tracks a so that the gripping devices are movable lengthwise of the base. Any suitable means may be provided for causing the gripping devices to engage the core boxes relatively to the base of the apparatus. In the con struction shown for this purpose the gripping devices are in the form of electromagnets, each comprising a coil C which is inclosed in an annular slot or recess in the head 0 of the gripping device. The coil surrounds a central post or core 0 and is preferably held in the recess by means of a disk or plate 0 of non-magnetic material which may be held in place in any suitable manner, for exampleby means of a nut which engages the outer threaded end of the post or core 0. The open end or face 0* of the head 0 is preferably arranged in a plane perpendicular to the guide rail or track. In order to enable the core boxes toJcooperate with the apparatus described, each of the two halves I) I) of a core box is provided with parts with which the ping devices can cooperate to alin'e the core box and to draw the two halves of the core box away from the core. I'Vhe'n the gripping devices are in the form of electromagnets as shown, the core boxes "must be either made of magnetic material or made of wood or other non-magnetic material, they must be provided with plates or parts (Zsecured to the core boxes'and provided with fiat facesjwhich are arranged in planes perpendicular to the direction in which the parts of the core boxes must be moved in order to clear the core. These faces are so arranged on'the core box as to cooperate with the :taces of the electromagnets. d d represent devices for locking'the two parts 0t thecore box'together when the sand is packed therein, (Z3 represents a plate or board which is adapted to be placed over the open end of the core box after the box is packed with sand, and which forms a base or support for the core alter the two halves of the inverted core box have been drawn from the core and E, Fig. 2, represents a core.
In the'operation of the'apparatus the core box, after the sand has been tl'ioroughly packed therein, is inverted and the plate d is placedupon the supporting ribs a or" the base. The gripping devices are then moved into operative rdation to the core box and the current is passed through the coils of the 'electromagnets to energize the same. hen the electromagnets are energized, the outer faces of the plates or parts (J will be drawn into contact with the faces 0 of the electromagnets, so that the core box will be properly alined on the base. The locking devices which hold'tl e two parts of the core box together are then releasedv and. the two halves of the core box can be drawn away from the core by moving the gripping devices lengthwise of the guide tracks. By
means of this apparatus the making of cores 1 greatly facilitated so that this work an be done by unskilled men. It is not necessary to use any precautions in drawing the parts of the corejbox away from the core since by means oftheelectromagnet's the proper aliningiof the core boxon the apparatus is insured and: the guide rails insure the proper drawing of the parts of the core box away from the core so as to prevent any damage to thecore.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparatus fortorming sand, the
' combination with a sand-forming device, of a base having a part adapted to receive the sand-forming device, and a gripping device adapted to engage said forming device to aline the same on said base and adapted to be moved relatively to said base to move said forming device from the formed sand.
2. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand-forming device, of a base having a part adapted to receive the sand forming device, guide means on said base, and a'gripping device movable on said guide means and adapted to engage said forming device to aline the same on said base and to move said forming device from the formed'sand.
3. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with asand-forming device, o a base having a part adapted to receive the sand-forming device, guide means on said base, and a gripping device movableon said guide in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the sand-receiving part of said base, said gripping device being adapted remove said forming device from the formed sand. i
4. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination witha sand-forming device, oi
a base having a partjadapted to receive the sand-forming device andto move said parts in opposite directions from the formed sand.
5. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand-forming device,'of a base having apart adapted to-receive the sand-forming device, guide means onsaid base extending into proximity to said receiving part and arranged in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of said receiving part, and a pair of gripping devices movable along said'guide means and adapted to engage different parts of said forming device'to aline said device with said guide means, said gripping devices being adapted to move saidsand-formingdevice from the formed sand.
6. Inan apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sanddorming device, of a base'having apartadapted to receive the sand-forming device, guide means on said base arranged in a plane parallel to the plane 01" said receiving part, a magnet movable on said guide means, and a part of magnetic material on said forming device with which said magnetmay cotiperate to draw said sand-forming device from the formed sand.
7. In an apparatus for forming sand, the
combination with sand-forming device, of a base having a part adapted to receive the sand-forming device, guide means on said base arranged in a plane parallel to the plane of said receiving part, a magnet movable on said guide means and having a flat face, and a flat face of magnetic material on said sandforming device with which said face of the magnet is adapted to cooperate for alining said sand-forming device with said guide means, said magnet being movable on said guide means to draw said sand-forming de vice from the formed sand.
8. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand-forming device, of a base having a part adapted to receive the sand-forming device, guide means on said base arranged in a plane parallel to the plane of said receiving part, a pair of electromagnets movable on said guide means, and parts of magnetic material on said sand-forming device adapted to be engaged by said electroniagnets for drawing said sand-forming device from the formed sand.
9. In an apparatus for forming cores, the combination with a core box having a part of magnetic material secured thereto, said part having a face arranged ina plane ex tending substantially at right angles to the line along which said core box must be removed from the core, of a base for said apparatus, means on said base, and a magnetic device movable on said guide means and having a face extending substantially at right angles to said guide means, said magnetic device being adapted to draw the face of said part into contact with the face of said magnetic device for alining said core box on said base, said magnetic device being movable in said guide means to with draw said core box from the core.
10. In an apparatus for forming cores, the combination with a core box made in two parts, each of said parts having a portion of magnetic material provided with a face arranged substantially in a plane at right angles to the line along which the part of the core box must be removed from the core, of a base for said apparatus having guide means, a pair of magnets movable in said guide means and having flat faces arranged in a plane extending substantially at right angles to the direction of movement of said magnets, said magents being adapted to d aw said flat faces of said portions of the core box into contact with the flat faces of said magnets to aline the core box on said base and being movable to withdraw said parts of said core box from the core.
11. In an apparatus for forming cores,
the combination with a core box having a part of magnetic material secured thereto, said part having a face arranged in a plane extending substantially at right angles to the line along which said core box must be removed from the core, and a plate on which said core box and core are adapted to rest, of a base for said apparatus having means for supporting said plate, guide means on said base extending into operative relation to said plate supporting means, and an electromagnet movable on said guide means and having a face extending substantially at right angles to the direction of movement of said electromagnets, said electromagnet when energized drawing the face of said part of the core box into substantially parallel relation to the face of said electromagnet for alining said core box on said base and drawing said core box from the core when said magnet is moved on said guide means.
12. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device having a part of magnetic material, guide means extending into operative relation to said device, and a magnet movable on said guide means into engagement with the magnetic material of said device to aline said device with regard to said guide means and to draw said sand forming device from the formed sand.
13. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device having a part of magnetic material, a base having a partadapted to receive said sand forming device and a guide portion, an electro-magnet movable on said guide means into operative relation to said magnetic material on said device, to aline said device with regard to said guide means and to draw said sand forming device from the sand.
14. In an apparatus for forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device, of guide means extending into operative relation to said sand forming device, a gripping device movable on said guide means, and cooperating parts on said gripping device and on said forming device whereby said gripping device is adapted to first aline said sand forming device with regard to said guide device and then withdraw said sand forming device from the formed sand by the movement of said gripping device on said guide means.
