Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Ailg, 17, 1920.
Application filed November 25, 1919. Serial No. 340,446.
It is often desirable when employing screws as fastening means to insure against their accidental loosening or removal, and
it is object of this invention to provide a device which, while being simple in character and consequently economical to manufacture, will satisfactorily serve this purpose and may be readily employed in connection with screws of the usual type without, in any way, mutilating the screw to adapt it to the lock.
In the accompanying drawings in which are shown two forms which my invention may take, it being understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my lock showing it as used with a screw,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the lock detached from the screw, r
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the lock shown in Fig. 1 detached from the screw, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of modified form of lock, and
' Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the form shown in'Fig. 5.. i
Referring to the drawings in more detail and having particular reference to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 indicates a screw having the usual flared head 9 adapted to be countersunk in j the work W.
A look is shown as a washer-like annulus 1 adapted to be countersunk in the work so that its surface lies flush with the material into which the screw is to be inserted, and is provided with means for holding it in fixed position, the means employed, in this instance, being two laterally disposed wings 2. At substantially its center, the lock is provided with an opening, 3 to receive the screw, and to provide a neat fit for the screw head, there is formed around the opening, a countersink 4.
As shown in Fig. 2, the lock has'located thereon an upstanding flange 5, surrounding the countersink 4 and opening 3, and serving as the means to fixedly connect the screw and the lock 1. The flange 5, as well as the entire lock member, may be formed of a relatively soft metal although, in order to serve the purpose of the present invention, it is only necessary that the flange be formed of the soft metal. After the screw is placed in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, a portion of the flange, at the end of the head slot 6 of the screw, may be superimposed on the screw head or, as shown being done in any suitable manner, as by a chisel or the like. 7
In the form of my device'shown in Fig. 5, the lock is provided with a tubular shank 7, which will serve to satisfactorily guide the screw into the work and thus afford a lock which may be found to be of more suitable structure'in certain classes of work. In this form ofmy device, the wings 8 extend to the end of the shank but operate in the same manner as in the form shown in Figs. land 2.
It will beobserved that I have provided a screw lock which will be very economical to manufacture and will, by reason of its p in Fig. 1, disposed within the head slot, this fixed connection to the work and the screw, insure the latter against accidental loosening andremoval. It is, of course, understood that such modifications may be made in the devices shown'in the accompanying drawings as come within the scope of the following claims wherein I define my i11- vention.
What is claimed is:
1. A look for screws, having a countersink for a screw head, a member adapted to be inserted into the material into which the screw is to be placed, andan upstanding fixedly securing the shell in position, and relativelysoft metal surrounding the coun-. means adapted to be displaced into thescrew tersink and adapted to have portions dishead-slot, said means comprising an upplaced overthe screw head. 10 standing flange of relatively soft metal. In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set 4. A screw lock consisting of a central my hand. countersink for the screw head, Wings adapted to enter the Work, and a flange of I WILLIAM CLOPTON.
