To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, ERNEST R. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Door Rabbet-Strips, of which the followin is a specification.
ne object'of my invention is to provide a novel form of rabbet strip for mounting or holding in place the striker plate, the
buffer elements and the anti-rattling device of a motor vehicle door, which in addition to being substantial, simple and relatively inexpensive to make and apply, shall have an ornamental appearance.
It is further desired to provide a rabbet strip of the above noted type with novel I forms of anti rattling and buffer devices deing a motor vehicle door and its cooperating jamb equipped and constructed in accordance with my invention;

In Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive of the above drawings 1 represents a portion of the side of the body of a motor vehicle having a recess constituting a doorwayfor the reception of a door 2. This door is provided with the ordinary spring latch 3 controlled by a handle 4 and likewise has fixed to its outer edge a plate 5 carrying a projectlng block or head 6.
The edge of the doorway which is designed to coact with the outer edge of the door 2, has mounted upon it a hollow metal rabbet strip 7 removably held against the edge of the face or jamb of the doorway by screws 8. In accordance with my invention I utilize this strip to hold in place a striker plate 9 designed to coact with'the latch 3,

two rubber covered rollers 10 and a spring grlpplng device 11. The latter is designed to receive and cooperate with the head 6 of the plate 5 to constitute an anti-rattling device for the door.
The keeper plate 9 consists of an inclined body of metal, preferably brass, having two arms or projections extending through the sides and into the hollow of the rabbet strip 7 where they are permanently gripped and held by two other screws 8. These arms 12 of the striker plate are each forked so as to extend on opposite sides of the screws 8 respectively and have their edges which engage the wooden face' of the door jamb toothed as indicated at 13, so that when the screws 8 are set up, the pressure upon the outer face of the rabbet strip 7 forces the toothed portions of the striker plate into holding engagement with the face of the body portion 1. Between the arms 12 the face of the rabbet strip is recessed to prov1de an opening 14 for the reception of the latch 3.
If for any reason it is desired to remove the striker plate 9, this may be conveniently accomplished without removing the rabbet strip or in any way injuring or defacing any of the parts, merely by loosening the screws 8. Thereupon said striker'plate may be conveniently withdrawn.
The rollers 10 are mounted on spindles 15. preferably non-rotatably held in bearings provided by two inwardly bent tongues side thereof. As a consequence when the door is closed, its outer edge engages the two rollers 10 and as it is forced into a position permitting the latch?) to enter the recess 14, it compresses said rollers so that when finally closed, it is not only brought to rest without serious jar or shock but is thereafter y'ieldingly held from movement.
The spring gripping device 11 for coaction withthe head 6 of the plate 5, consists of a strip of spring metal such as brass, suitably formed into -a number of convolutions and mounted within the hollow of the rabbet strip within a holder 17 of elongated U-shaped form Said holder I is likewise made of bent or struck up sheet metal and the ends of its parallel arms are turned at right angles so as to extend parallel with and immediately adjacent the inner surface of one side of the rabbet strip within which it is mounted. Rivets 18 are employed to permanently connect this holder with said side.
The rabbet strip itself is cut away or recessed on one side and in the face adjacent thereto to permit of the entrance of the head 6; the spring strip 11 being so formed and mounted that its central corrugation provides a socket having a narrow entrance and a wider interior for the reception of said head. When the door is moved to within a short distance of its closed position, the head 6 is forced betweenthe sides of the central corrugation or convolution of the spring member 11 and ultimately enters the same, thereby laterally compressing the remaining convolutions with the re- I sult that it is firmly held against possibility of movement and efi'ectually prevents rattling of the door in its doorway in th vehicle body. Not only does the device 6-11 prevent rattling of the door but it assists 1n supportingthe same against sagging on its hinges.
In that form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 I have provided fixed bumper blocks 20 of rubber or other suitable mate- 'rial which, as in the case of the rollers 10, project at one side as well as from the face of the rabbet strip. These projecting portions of said blocks 20 are of substantially rectangular section and are held in place by a body portion which projects into the hollow of the rabbet strip and is clamped by one of the adjacent retaining screws 8. As before these blocks not onlyp'revent iriju rious shock to the body whenthe door is violently closed but prevent rubbing of the door against its jamb and the associated parts as well as assist in preventing -rat- -tling or relative movement after the spring catch 3has entered its opening 14 in the rabbet strip. I v Not only is the above described construction relatively inexpensive tomanufacture and of such a nature" that any of the elements 9, 10 and 11 may be conveniently removed and replaced, but the arrangement is such as to minimize the labor of mountingthese various devices, since they may be simultaneously applied to the jamb of the door at the time the rabbet strip is screwed or otherwise fastened thereto.
I claim:
1. The combination of a hollow rabbet strip; a striker plate extending into said strip; with means acting on the rabbet strip to clamp said plate in position.
2. The combination of a supporting structure; a hollow rabbet strip mounted thereon; a striker plate extending into the hollow of said strip; with screws for holding said late to the rabbet strip.
3. he combination of a hollow rabbet strip; a striker plate extending into said' strip and coacting therewith to define a latch receiving recess; with means for hold ing said plate in position.
4:. The combination ofa supporting structure defining a doorway; a rabbet strip mounted thereon and having a recess for the reception of a latch; a striker plate having two projections and coacting'with vide bearings; a spindle mounted in said bearings; and a resilient roller mounted on the spindle in position to project beyond the side and faceof-the rabbet strip.
6. The combination of a hollow rabbet strip having an opening; acasing fastened in said rabbet strip and a corrugated spring element mounted in the casing with one of its convolutions adjacent the openingof the rabbet strlp; with means engaging the ends of said spring element for connecting them to the rabbet strip.
