T 0 all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, RYUJI Saro, a subject oit the Fmperor of Japan, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys and Games, or" which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in amusement devices, and particularly to a ball throwingn game with the main object in view to provide a device of this kind in which dexterity and sure aim on the part oi" the player is required, who throw balls with the intention to direct them through a certain opening, the approach to said opening being provided with means to deflect the course o1 the ball, means being provided to return the ball to the thrower whether it passes through said opening or is deflected from its course.v j

A preferred form of the invention has been described herein and shown in the ac companying drawings, in which Figure u1, is a longitudinal sectional view of the amusement device` taken on line 1`1 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 2, is a similar sectional view, but showing the ball releasing means in releasing position.

My improved device comprises an inclined base plate 1, which is rigidly attached at opposite encs to support 2 and 3.

A foot-board 4 and a head-board 5 extend across the ends of the base plate, the footboard projecting only slightly above the base plate while the head-board projects a greater distance above its end of the base plate. A pair of side-boards 6 and 7 connect the foot- Merging into said base plate 1, as shown at 8, and supported by the'side walls 6 and 7 is a second plate 9 which has a greater inclination than the base plates and leads to a bridging member 10, said member 10 being mounted upon a third plate 11, which is also supported by the side walls 6 and 7, and arranged parallel to the base plate 1, at a certain distance above the same.

teeth-like obstructions 15 leave a ccntei" opening 16 large enough to permit a ball of select size to pass=through- Between the target 13 and head-board is a trap door 17, having a hollowcd out upper surface 18, hinged to a supporting member 19, by means oi a spring actuated hinge 20, which has the tendency to retain the trap door normally in a closed position, the upward movement ot the trap door being limited by a stop 21.

The aforementioned s idable door 9b, rests upon and is guided by means of rails 22 and 23, projecting from side walls G and 7, and retained normally in closed position by means oic two coiled springs 24 and 25. This slidable door 9b, as well as the trap door 17, are actuated and opened by means ot two cords 26 and 27 which pass over grooved pulleys 2S, 29, 80 and 31, and engage the respective doors as shown at S2 and 33. These cords lead outwardly through an opening in the side-board 6 and are attached to a ring 34.

The upper surface of the bridging member 11 is on a level with the bottom of the opening 1G, in target 13, and is gradually rcduced in its width toward said opening, so as to increase the difficulty of directing a ball into said opening.

Two vertical ribs 35 and 36, are further provided on plate 11, for the purpose of guiding balls, which do not pass through opening 1G, into the aperture 9a.

An opening 37 is provided in the lower end of plate 9 adjacent the side wall 7, this opening' extending up the plato a sufficient distance to permit of balls passing down the base-plate therethrough. A diagonal rib 3S extends along the base-plate under plate 9, the lower end of this rib being adjacent the opening 37.

The operation of the device is as ilollows:

The player, standing in front of footboard el, throws or rolls a ball in the direction of the target, aiming at the center open- Any ball missing said opening 1G will be 'deflected by target 13, rolling baclr over plate 1l, and coming to a stop in aperture in 9, where it will rest upon the slidable door 9b. r

By pulling the cords 26 and 2T both the slid-able door 9", and the trap door 18 will be actuated and opened, whereupon the balls ccumulated thereon will be released and fall upon the base plate 1, rolling out through the opening 37, toward ywhich they will be guided by rail 3S and arriving inally at theifront partition 11.

While a preferred form of my Vinvention has been described and shown herein, itis obvious that modification in form and arrangement of parts .can be made without de parting from the spirit ol my invention and rom the scope of the annexed claims.

I claim:

1. In an amusement device of the character described, the combination of a target v having an oblong mouthlike slot, a larger opening in said slot, an inclined ball runway leading` to said target, said' ball runway constituted of portions of varying-in-- cline, a narrow member leading` toward the opening in said target, said member heilig narrower toward the said target, an aperture at a certain distance in front ol the target, a slidable door closing` normally said aperture, means to open said slidable door, a trap door Vbehind said target, means to ope ate said trap door in cooperation with said slidable door, and a guiding member underneath the adapted to cause the thrown ballsto return by gravity to the starting point of said runway, and separate releasablc retaining devices adapted to prevent access respec-V tively to said guiding means of the balls passing through said openingand the l failing to ypass through saidl opening'.
