FURNANDO O. G. BARR, OF GABTERS CREEK STATION, TENNESSEE.
AIMPRQVEMENT IN SAWING'MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,007, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FURNANDO (1G. PARR, of Carters Creek Station, county of Maury, State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Sawing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The vobject of my invention is to produce a portable, durable, and effective sawing-inachine,whicl1 shall supersede the present laborions mode of sawing wood by hand, and the complicated and costly machinery now in use. It consists in attaching to a suitable frame an ordinary saw, moved backward and forward 'by means of a connecting-rod attached to acrank-Wheel, which rotates through the action of cog-Wheels and a crank.4 The piece of wood to be saWed is placed between two saddles, one at each end of the frame.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I will refer to the accompanying drawing.
Figure I is a side view of my invention. Fig. II is a plan view of the same.
A represents the frame of the machine, supported by four legs, a, b, c, and d. To give portability to the machine, and to enable it to be moved from place to place as desired, rollers f and g are placed on the legs e and d. Running crossWise of the machine is a shaft, B, working in the journals C and D. On the outer end of this shaft B is a Wheel, E, connected-With a sliding bar, F, which Works in a guide-Way, G, on the outer side of the frame of the machine by a connecting-rod, H. To this sliding barF is loosely fastened the saw I, which can be raised to any height for the accommodation of any-sized log, but is prevented from dropping beyond a desired distance by pin h. J and K are saddles or supports to lay the log in, and are fastened to the outside of the frame A. In order to facilitate the operator in raising the saw I, and to allow the log to pass underneath, a spring-board, L, is fixed below the frame A, and connects With the saWI by the cord 0 running over the roller Il in the standard B. S is a cog-wheel on the shaft B, Working into another cog-wheel, T, on the shaft V. W is a balance-wheel. X is a crank attached to the shaft V.
In order to operate my invention, the log is first put into the saddles J and K; the saw I is then raised and allowed to rest on the top of the log. The operator then turns the crank, which, through the assistance of the cog- Wheels, moves the saw back and forth over the log. When the pieces are cut off, and the saw must be raised again, the operator simply presses his foot on the board Y.
Having thus fully described my invention, I desire to claim- The saddles J and K, saw I, pin h, springboards L and Y, standard B, cord o, rollers f and g, in combination with the frame A, cogwheels S and T, crank-Wheel E, balance-Wheel W, connecting-rod H, sliding bar Gr, and crank X, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
