Description
STATES PATENT Genion.
JOHN E. GAR'SIDE, )FAHENNEPIR ILLINOIS.
IMPRov-'EMENT IN HAND-SEEDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 134,986, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may conce-rn:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GARsiDE, of
Hennepin, in the county of Putnam and in tion; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a
side elevation with end taken oif; Fig. 4, a plan or birds-eye view of central portion.
This invention consists of a hollow cylinder or tube of a light construction, having the ends closed, and one or more partitions at equal distances between said ends, and between each of the latter a perforated partition.. Running along the entire length of the cylinder is a line of perforations to discharge seed from each of the divisions thus formed. Said divisions have also each an opening to receive seed, and a proper cover. .lhe whole is mounted in proper bearings in a frame suspendcd to the neck of the operator, and turned by a winch 0r by a band passing around the cylinder, and a pulley or band-wheel actuated by said winch, which rotates the cylinder either fast or slow; or the cylinder may be conveniently mounted on wheels and made to rotate with proper gearing, or be attached to any convenient drill or other similar machine now in common use.
One of the forms in which I construct this machine is as follows: A represents a cylinder of sheet metal, closed at both ends, and having one or more vertical fixed divisions or partitions, 2 3, and midway between each a perforated partition, 5 6 7, or a partition having a hole, b, in the center; also a door or sliding lid, e e e, which covers a hole for the admission of seed into each receptacle thus partitioned oii", which door or slide slips under tongues m cut out and turned up from the body of the cylinder, or some equivalent of a similar nature for retaining the doors or lids.
Along the entire length of the cylinder runs one or more lines of seed-holes, a a a, tc. On each side of the middle of the cylinder is a collar, E E, each having a circular rib, d d,
around it and projecting therefrom; lB, aboard,
to which is attached a projecting horizontal frame, h, which rests against the breast ofthe operator, and supports intermediate braces l Z, in which are pivoted the axle and winch 7c of a vertical band-wheel or pulley, D, around which and that part of the cylinder thereto opposite the band g passes. C C are circular bearings, each ending in stems, above which they are attached to the board B, and severally having a recess around the interior to receive a rib or flange, d, of one of the collars; F, a band or strap attached to either end of the board B, and, passing around the neck ofthe operator, rests upon the back of his neck or his shoulders.
The cylinder may be attached to any convenient machine as a drill or other mounted wheeled implement or machine, and connected with and rotated by any operative gearing.
The operation of this invention is as fcllows: The sower places the machine in front of him, the frame being horizontal, and the cylinder A extending to right and left of him, the whole being supported by the band F passing over the back of his neck. The winch 7c is turned, and the band g rotates the cylinder according to the speed at which he requires to distribute or sow the seed, which passes out at each revolution from the holes a a, &c.
The partitions 2 3 are imperforated in order to keep the seed from settling toward either end of the cylinder, and the intermediate partitions 5 6 7 are so placed between the others 2 8 as to counteract the same tendency of the seed, letting some pass, but holding back the main body of said seed.
The cylinder is charged with seed by sliding back the hatches or doors e c e and running the seed into the holes f f f in each division of the cylinder.
In a seed-sewer, consisting of a revolving cylinder, A, with closed ends, the combination of the fixed partitions 2 3', intermediate In testimony that I claim' the foregoing perforated partitions 5 6 7, sliding doors e, seed-sewer I have hereunto set my hand this perforations a, xed ribbed collars E d E d, 17th day of October, A. D. 1872.
circular angedbearings G C, board B hav- JOHN E. GARSIDE. I ing the pulley of Winch 7c arranged so that the Witnesses: Y band will pass around the cylinder, subst-an- A. P. PURVIANCE,
tialiy as set forth. JOHN E. ALLEN.
