Description

M. R. PONTIUS AND A. L. WEST.
SAND REEL SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31. 19:9.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.

snnnrnnnn surroiar.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we,MERL R. Pomuus and AL'VER L. WEST citizens of the United States, residin at Fildorado, in the county of Butler aiid tate of Kansaahave invented new and useful Improvements in Sand- Reel Supports, of which the following is a s 'ecification.
his invention relates to improvements in well-drilling rigs and more particularly to the structure of the' sand reel and the invention has for its object to provide a structure of this character constructed entirely of metal th'ereb to increase the rigidity and dm'ability or the rig and possessing such novel features of construction as will permitof the'entirestructure being readily taken apart for convenience in transportation.
Another object is the provision of an improv'ed fsupport for-sand reels which will permit ofswift and convenient adjustment of, the supporting shaft in order to bring the friction pulley into and out of engagement with the driving wheel, as desired.
With these and other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a fragmental side elevation of the rig illustrating the improved sand reel support in detail.
Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the reel and improved support therefor,
Fig. 3 represents a fragmental longitudinal sectional view through one of the supports for the wheel shaft, and
Fig. 4 represents an end elevation of the relatively stationa bearing.
Referring to the rawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 indicates generally the relatively stationary bearing standard which is supported by an integral base plate 6 upon the supporting platform of the drilling rig and is provided in its upper portion with a transverse aperture 7 receivin the top andbottom bearings 8 and 9 respectively which are of such size as to admit of a relatively wide range of adjustment thereof in planes at right angles to each other within the opening 7 in the bearing standard. Specification of Letters Patent.

lower bearing member is adjustably supported by and clamped between three screws 10 two of which are disposed horizontally andarra'nged in diametrically opposed relation in the opposite sides of the opening 7 and the third screw of the group is dis.
posed vertically and threaded in an aperture formed in the lower part or wall of the opening 7. several supporting screws are engaged at spaced intervals with the external surface of the lower bearing member 9 and, by proper'manipulation of the screws the position of the lower bearin member 9 may bevarie'das desired within theopening 7 and, as will be readily appreciated, lock nuts or other suitable types of locking devices are employed for securing the adjusting screws in the desired positions. Thenpper bearing member 8 is arranged above the bearing member 9 and confined between longitudinal ribs 11 formed thereon and is maintained in adjusted position by a screw 12 threaded in an internally threaded aperture formed in the top wall of the opening 7.
The inner or bearing surfaces of the members 8 and 9 are formed with opposed concavities 13 shaped conformably with and confining the spherical head 14 formed integrally with one terminal of the hand reel shaft 15, the body portion of which latter is of less external diameter than the internal diameter of the bearing formed by the members 8 and 9 whereby the axial position of the shaft 15 with relation to the axis of the bearing may be varied, as desired.
The opposite terminal of the hand reel shaft 15 is supported in a movable bearin designated generally by the numeral 16 an which is pivotally supported upon a pivot pin 17 secured in the opposite ears 18 of a base plate 19 arranged upon the supporting platform of the drilling rig at a point removed from the relatively stationary bearing member 5.
he movable bearing 16 is in the form of a lever which is constructed in two sections 20 and 21 having their adjacent terminals flanged and detachably connected as at 22 by bolts or equivalent fastening devices. By constructingthe leverintwo parts in this manner, the parts may be readily disassembled for convenience in transportation. The sections or parts 20 and 21 are formed with an aperture 7 similar in size and shape to the aperture 7 in the relatively stationary bear- The inner terminals of the ing standard 5 and receiving superposed bearing members 5 and S)" which are also identical in construction to the bearing nn-inbors H and 9 except that they are formed with a plane bore for engagement with the plane external surface of the terminal of the sand reel shaft l5 with which they are engaged. 'lhelowerlieai'ingmeinberWissupported inadj nsted position by a series of angularly disposed screws 10 and the upper bearing member 8 is adj ustably supported in position by a screw 12.
In applying the invention to use, the shaft l5, usual, is disposed adjacent the driving wheel a fragment of which is illustrated in Fig. 1 and a friction pulley 23 is supported upon the shaft 15, and by proper manipulation oi the lever is movable into and out of engagement with the circumlerential edge of the driving wheel in or dcr that the rotary movement of the latter may be transmitted to the shaft 15 at the will of the operator, in order to actuate the sand reel indicated at R in dotted lines in Fig. :2. As is clearly evident, the lever or post 16 is movable outwardly and inwardly with relation to the driving wheel upon the pivot pin 17, the spherical head 14 at the terminal of the shaft 15 engaging in the concavities 13 of the superposed bearing memhers 8 and 9 permitting a limited swinging movement of the shaft suflicient to permit of the desired adjustment oi the friction pulley 23.
What We claim is:
In a well drilling rig constructed entirely of metal, a drive Wheel, a stationary and a pivoted standard, each having an opening to receive a shaft hearin a sectional shaft bearing mounted in each opening, said opening being of a size to permit a relatively wide range of adjustment of the bearing therein, means for supporting each bearing in adjusted position, the pivoted standard being composed of detachably connected sections separably connected at the opening therein, a sand reel shaft mounted iii-said bearings, a friction pulley carried by said shal't, a ball and socket joint between the shaft and the bearing of said stationary standard to allow a limited swinging movement of the shaft sufficient to permit of the adjustment of the friction pulley carried by the shaft to cause it to engage said drive Wheel.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures hereto.
