To all whom t may concern Be it known that vI, SAMUEL L. ADELsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Sockets, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for the prevention of the removal of electric light bulbs excepting by those authorized to do f so; in other words, my improved device is intended to4 prevent the stealing offsuch bulbs. To carry out my invention,I` provide an auxiliary socket to receive a bulb, arranged to engage a standard socket, and means toprevent the manipulation orrotation of the socket after it has been connectediip for use. y
` I'will now describe my invention in detail, and refer to the accompanying drawing,

In the drawing a standard socket is indicated by 9 having the usual threaded bushing 1.0,iiis'ulating sleeve 11 and casing-member 12. One of the elements ofmy invention consists of a threaded plug 13 to engage the bushing 10 of the socket 9, said plug 13carrying heads 141- aiid 15 of insulating material, through which a conducting post 16 passes. A further elementof the'invention consists of a threaded sleeve 2O to engage the plug 13; said sleeve or socket member carries4 the bulb indicated by 21. The bulb and sleeve 20 preferably tightly eiigage'eachrother for a purpose to bede scribed. In other wo`rds,"there will notbe 'any looseness upon the part ofthev engagement of saidy parts, and hence thesleeve 2() will have to be lheld while the bulb is being removed or applied thereto. The sleeve 2O is' preferably provided with stops22 to engage the plug end of the bulbito limit the inward position of same. The sleeve 20 carries a head or flange23 of insulating material, for a purpose to be described, said head or flange being knurled at the peripliery thereof, as indicated by 24. The sleeve or supplemental socket 20 is iiiclosed by a casing 25secured at its upper end to a head 26, which in turn is secured to the sleeve 13 in any desirable manner, said casing being secured to said head byscrews 27 or otherwise. The casing 25 Ais insulated from sleeve or socket 20 by means ofa lining 28 of insulating material. rIhe casing 25 and lining 28 are provided with aliningopenings 29 and`30 large enoughfor the passage of the tips of the lingers therethrough.- The device also includes an outer casing 31, the function "of which is to cover openings 29 and 30 after a bulb has been installed to pre; vent tlie removal of the bulb. To retain the outer casing 31 in position to cover the openings 29 and 30, I provide a channel-ring 32 which, in this instance, is split and secured to the casing portion of the socket *.9 byl a binding-screw 33a. lt will be seen that the casing 25 is reduced in diameter to form a neck 42 slightly larger than the supplemental socket 20, but smaller than thebody of the sleeve, thereby producing the said shoulder 39. The head 23 of the socket 2() is slightly smaller than the body of its casing, but larger than the neck 42; hence said socket 2O cannot be removed i from the casing when said casing'is inwranged to have stalled. The socket 20 may be unscrewed from sleeve 13 to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 1, but the bulb cannot be removed therefrom because the head 23 cannot be grasped, as the openings L11,29-
and 30 are not in ali-nement. The bulb 21 will lit the socket 20 tight enough to prevent its removal unless the head 23 is held. lf A the head is not held, the vbulb and its ,socketwill-rotate together. To remove the bulb from the socket 20, the screw 33- will be unscrewed to release the casing 31, which can be lowered to cause openings 11, 29 and V30 to aline, after which head 23 can be held and the bulb removed. Should the socket 20 be unscrewed at any time, the head 23 will drop upon shoulderBS, hence is free to rotate without resistance. When outer casing is inposition, the inner `casing 25 cannot be removed, asis evident from an inspection of Fig. 1. Theouter casing 31 prevents the entire device from being manipulated for the purpose of separation.
