Be 1t known that I. ED\\ARD SrmonL. a c1t- I izen of the United States, residing at Brooklvn, in the city of New York, State of New ork, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Automobile-Tops, of which the'following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawing This invention relates to the construction of the roofs of automobiles and has for its object providing a ready means for affording and controlling ventilation to the inclosed portion of a car.

In many cases it is desirable to have only the rear end of the movable top raised and in some cases to have both ends raised but the rear end with a greater outletthan the front; This result would not be available in a'case where the movable part of the top was simply hinged to the roof at the front .or rear end. The use of a movable side portion is not available for the purposes of my ventilating top as the draft ofwind when it is in use would be directly on the body of the occupants.

In the drawings A represents the main body of a passenger carrying automobile and B is the roof.

In the roof I provide a rectangular adj ustable cover portion G, which is preferably made to conform generally with the outlines of the roof but is of smaller dimensions. The cover C, has its edges rabbeted as shown at a, to fit. a corresponding rabbet b, on the inner edge of the opening in the roof. On its under side at each corner of the ventilating adjustable cover C, I provide a confining slide way D in which slides a carrier block 0, having attached thereto, by a swiveljoint d, an arm E. The arm E, at'its end opposite to the swivel oint d, is hinged to the underside of the roof B. The hinge portion It, extending slightly past the inner edge of the opening in the top'B.

In the block 0, is a screw f, secured at its outer end to a handle a, and the under side tend to press the end of the screw .f, into the sockets 2', when it is travelingpast them. The construction provides for the movable part of the top being hinged at each end as well as being adjustable to difierent elevations and means for retaining the same at various elevations. This provides an advantage not heretofore obtained. Where the four corners are adapted to be separately raised and lowered, one side of the movable top may be raised to a greater height than the other. In operation the adjustable cover portion 0, is readily pushed up by one hand of the occupant at any point when the handles a are turned to free the screws from the sockets. The'block c then travels along the slide way as the ventilator is raised or lowered at either end when a slight turn of the handle awill settle the adjustable top in pow sition. By this means the air may be readily admitted to any desired extent at the back or bear slightly on the traveling block 0, and

The inconvenience of having either end of the ventilating portion or top part C, secured in position on a level with. the main body is avoided by my new construction. IVhile one end of the center part of the top may be raised higher than the other if desired, both the ends are free to be raised and allow air to pass.

Having described my improvements what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
