Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 17, 1919. seriai No. 297,737. f
To all whom it may concern.'
Bc it known that we, ELIsHii A. Pos'i and EMIL F. SCHMITZ, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Allegan, county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a full and clear specification'.
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section through one ofthe lower moldings; i D
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in vertical section;
Fig. 4l is a transverse section on the lineKL 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 54-5 of Fig. 4. i
The bottom wall A of our casket is constructed of a single panel consisting entirely of a body of hardened plastic or cementitious material a inclosed in paper-board sheets b which adhere to the plastic mass and form virtually an integral part thereof. The edges of this bottom panel are fastened to the bottom molding strips B by means of nails c driven through the edges of the panel and up into the molding. The molding is rabbeted to the depth of the panel along its lower inner corners, so that the bottom-face of the panel is flush with the bottom-edge of the molding. In this Way, the rough edges of the plastic mass a and paper-boards b are virtually inclosed in the wooden body ofthe molding, these edges abutting against the vertical wall al of the rabbet and thereby protecting the edges of the plastic filling as well as the paper-boards. In this way, a strong, durable and light bottom structure is provided with the least possible use of lumber.
The upper inner edge of the bottom molding is rabbeted in a manner similar to the bottom edge thereof to receive the lower edges of the side-panels C, which panels are made of the same materials and in the same manner as the bottom wall, the raw edges of the plastic body as well as the raw edges of the paperboards Z) abutting against the upwardlyfacing wall of the rack. In the top edges of the panels C are nailed in the same manner the top moldings D, the lower` edges ratenteaaug. 3,1920.
of these top moldings being rabbeted to receive and protect the upper edges of the panels. In this way, a very substantial, durable, light body structure is provided, the composite panels C being entirely sufficient in strength to `withstand the usual strains. By rabbeting the moldings B` and D along their inner corners, these moldings may receive the usual ornamental nish on the eX- terior sides, leaving exposed `only those poi'- tions of the panels which are smooth and finished. It will be observed also that, the outer` ysurfaces ofthe panels being paperboard, they form-a good adhering surface for theglue used for fastening the nishing cloth thereon in those cases wherevlinishing` cloth is used; and in those cases where finishing cloth is not used, these paper-board surfaces may be readily paintedand varnished so as `to be indistinguishable from wood. e v
Thetop section of the casket is made in the same manner as the body, the composite side-panels E of the top section being rabbeted into the inner corners of the molding strips F, while the toppanel G is similarly rabbetedinto the upper corners of the top molding strip H. To reinforce the casket, We extend across the bottom at intervals a series of Wood vstrips or battens d and nail or otherwise fasten the ends thereof to the base-moldings o; rabbeting the ends of these base-strips into notches in the moldings. The bottom panel is not only nailed to the corner moldings as set forth, but also nailed or otherwise fastened to these bottom battens. At two or more places along the length of the casket, we fasten pairs of vertical strips e which form anchorages for the handles. These strips c are fastened at the lower ends to the base-moldings and atthe upper ends to the margin or top moldings d. These vertical strips e serve not only as anchorages for the handles, but also as braces for the side-walls, serving to' tie the top frame d to the bottom frame b in a rigid manner andv thus take the strain off the side panels,
this being particularly advantageous where, as in the present case, no .vertical corner pieces or posts are used. s
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically..
plastic material and paper-board being abutted against said vertical wall of the rabbet, and side-panels of the same material as the bottom wall having their lower edges fitted into the rabbets formed along the upper edges of said corner moldings.
2. ln a burial casket, bottom and top margin moldings, unitary kcomposite plastic panels connecting these moldings, and pairs of vertical battens lying against the interior of the walls and having theirl ends connected with the top molding as well as the bottom molding, handles, fastening means for said handles extending through the side walls and being anchored in the vertical battens, substantially as described.
3. ln a burial casket, top and bottom margin moldings iabbeted along their edges, independent panels formed of plasticV material and faced with paper-board having their raw edges inclosed and protected by being fitted into the rabbets formed margin moldings edges, side panels formed of plastic ma` terial having their edges inclosed and proalong the edges of said moldings, as and for the purpose set forth.
.4a ln a burial casket, top and bottom margin .moldings rabbeted `along their edges, panels formed of plastic material and faced with paper-board, the edges of said panels being fitted into and inclosed in the rabbets formed along the edges of said moldings, and reinforcing battens arranged along the inner side of said walls, as and for the purpose set forth.
In a burial casket, the combination of top and bottom margin moldings rabbeted along their edges, unitary panels formed of plastic material having their edges fitted into the rabbets formed along the edges of said moldings to inelo'se and protect the same, 'and reinforcing battens arranged transversely of the bottom panels and having their ends anchored in the bottom moldings, as and for the purpose set forth.
6.111 a burial casket, top and bottom rabbeted along their tected by being tted into. the rabbets formed along the edges of said moldings, vertically-arranged battens disposed along the side panels and fastened to the inner faces of said moldings, handles, and securing means for said handles extending through the side panels and anchored in the said battens, as and for vthe purpose set forth.
In testimony' whereof we hereunto aflix y oursignatures this 10th day of May, 1919.
