Application filed October 30, 1919. Serial No. 334,392.

An object of the present inventionis to provide a'bed which may be constructed of the desired usual size, and which may be folded compactly and into a form which stands above the floor aiheight corresponding to that of an ordinary dining room or library table, and which may be folded into such dimensions as follow the usual size and design of a table. I

:Another object of the invention is to provide a convertible article of furniture of this nature which, when folded, may be conveniently used as a table, providing ample feet and leg room beneath the" top of the table so that one or more persons may be seated 1n the usual manner about the table without inconvenlence.

A further object is to provide a structure .of this character which is of simple con.-

struction, provided with relatively few movable or folding parts and which when adjusted possesses substantial strength in either of its foldedpositions.

The above, and various other, objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described in, and in part understood from, the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, wherein;

Referring to the drawings; wherein like parts are designated by similar numerals of reference throughout theseveral views, 10 and 11 designate a pair of leaves which are connected by hinges 12 to their respective leg sections '13 and 14 the leaves 10 and 11 being attached to the sections near the outer ends of the leaves and forming therewith, when unfolded, the head and foot sections of a bed. The leg sections 13 and 14 are provided with side pieces 15 of suitable depth and which extend from the leg sections toward each other and are supported at their inner ends upon intermediate leg sections 16, which are spaced a suitable distance inwardly from the leg sections 13 and 1 1, and are rigidly connected therewith. The opposite end sections of the article of furniture, thus formed, may for convenience in moving the end sections to ward and from eachoth'er, be provided with casters or rollers 17 on. the lower ends of the legs forsupporting same and for contact with the floor.

The legs 16 are disposed in pairs one of each pair being disposed at the end of the adjacentside-piece 15; and to each pair of legs 16 is hinged a folding section 18 of a width equal to the depthof the side-piece 1'5 and adapted to over-lap the same when the hinged sections 18: are raised as shown in Fig. The sections 18 are connected by hinges 19 located at the lower edges of the sections 15 and 18 so that when the sections '18 areswung down into the position shown in Fig. 1,' the sections 18 project inwardly from the legs 16'and are adapted to meet and form an inclosure between the sections .18 and the legs 16. The inner ends of the sections 18 extend beyond the hinges 19a distance equal. sub stantially to the depth of'the side pieces 15 so that when the sections 18 are swung down the inner ends of the sections lie flush with the upper edges of the side pieces 15. The leaves 10 and 11 are adapted, in one position to be folded down upon the upper T edges of the side pieces 15 and upon the inner ends of the hinged sections 18 to form the table top. The leg sections 13 and 14 are provided with end pieces 21 which are secured between the legs of thesections 13 and 142 and extend down from the leaves 11, and may be employed for supporting the hin es Theend pieces 21 together with the side pieccs15 form an inclosure for a'mattress 2 bedding andthe like, which is adapted to be'stored in the device when folded.

The free ends of the sections 18 are hing edly connected together at their, upper edges by a hinge 23 which is adapted to open downwardly as shown in Fig. 1, and which is adapted to bring the outer ends of sections 18 together when the latter are raised, as shown in Fig. 4. For holding the sections 18 raised a suitable latch2d is mounted upon the lower edge of one section 18 at each side of the device, the latches 2 1 being mounted upon and connected for. simultaneous movement by a crossrod 25, pivoted to thesections 18 and having a handle 26 at one end in position for engagement by the hand by turning the rod and moving the latches 2% in one direction. A spring 27 is carried by the section 18 and bears against the latch 27 for urging it to move in one direction for interlockingengagement with a keeper 28 carried by the opposite section 18; The sections-18 each comprise a pair of side pieces, and a latch 27 and its lreeper 28 are arranged upon the opposite sides of the sections 18 so as to registerat opposite sides of the bed when set up. y

The mattress22 is supported upon a suit able spring 29 which is secured at opposite ends to the lower portions of the end pieces 21 and is adapted to fold down with the hinged sections 18 when the device is collapsed orfolded intotable form.

The leaves 10 and 11 may be provided with a latch 30 for holding the leaves together when folded down into table form.

The leaves 10 and 11 are adapted to be swung into raised position as shown in Figs. 4: and 6, and for the purpose of holding the leaves so raised to provide head and foot boards for the bed, the leaves each have in their outer ends a latch3l adapted to engage with a keeper plate 32 seated inthe acL jacent end section. Each latch 31 has a projection or finger piece 38 extending outward through the edge of the adjacent leaf to an extent sufiicient tobe engaged by the thumb or finger to facilitate the release of the leaf when folding the same. 7

From. the above it isyapparent that when the device is in table form, and it is desired to convert the device into a bed, it is only necessary to raise. the leaves 10 and 11 and the latches 31 automatically lock the leaves in raised position. The end sections are then drawn apart to raise the hinged sec-- tions 18 when the latches 24: automatically lock the sections 18 extended. The device being new set up as a bed holds the spring 29 taut to support the mattress 22.

In folding the device into a table, the handle 26 is operated torelease the latches 24 and the sections 18 are swung down and at the same time the end sections are moved toward each other. The sections 18 meet at the opposite sides of the table'and inclose the mattress 22, the spring 29, and bedding or the like which may be pressed down into the space between .the end sections. The leaves 10 and 11 are now released and swung down to cover the collapsed bed and form the top of the table.

W hat is claimed is? 1. A convertible table bed comprising end sections, hinged s ctions connecting the end sections,said end and hinged sections having compartments adapted to receive and house bedding,andleaves carried by the end sections adapted to be raised when the latter are extended to expose the bedding and adapted to be lowered to cover the bedding when said sections are brought together and to form the top of the table.

2. A convertible table bed comprising end sections, havingcompartments for receiving the ends of bedding,aleaf hinged to each section for covering the bedding and adapted to be raised for forming an end board for the bed, and hinged sections connecting the end .sections, having compartments for receiving the intermediate portion of the bedding adapted tohe swung down between the end sections to permit the bedding to fold downwardly and house the same, and

adapted to be raised between the endsections forsupporting the bedding in fiat position for use.

8. A convertible table bed comprising end sections, hinged sections connecting the end sections for. holding the same separated when, eXtended and adapted to be folded down between th sections when collapsed, saidien'd 'and hinged sections having side and endportions for supporting and housing bedding when the sections are extended and when collapsed, and leaves hinged to the end sections adapted to be raised when extended for forming boards at the end of the bed and exposing the bedding for use and adapted to be folded down to cover the bedding and to form a table top when the sections are collapsed.

A convertible table comprising a pair of bedding receiving table sections having inclosing top leaves hinged to the sections adapted to be swung up to form the boards of a bed and expose the bedding for use when the sections are drawn apart, and hinged sections connecting said table sections adapted to be swung down between the same beneath said top leaves and having sides for inclosing th edges of the bedding beneath said leaves, and adapted to be folded up between the table sections to hold the same apart and support the intermediate portion of the bedding when used as a bed. 5. A convertible table bed comprising a pair of end sections, a pair of intermediate sections,said end and intermediate sections having bottoms and sides for holding b d ding and the intermediate sections being hinged together at the adjacent top corners of the sides and being hinged at their bottoms to the end sections, whereof the intermediate sections may be folded together downwardly between the end s ctions to form a vertical compartment adapted to reccive the intermediate portion of bedding I when folded down to permit the drawing together of the end sections, and hinged corners carri d by the end sections for closing the tops of the same and adapted to extend over said vertical compartment to cover the folded bedding therein, said corners providing a table top when swung down and adapted to be raised to provide end boards for the bed when the sections are extended.

6. A convertible table bed comprising a pair of table sections each having supporting legs at their inner and outer ends and a hinged leaf adapted to be swung down to cover the sections when used as a table, and hinged sections connecting the inner ends of the table sections adapted to be swung down between the legs at the inner ends of the table sections when used as a table and adapted to be swung up between the sections to hold the same extended when used as bed, said leaves being adapted to be swung up upon their respective sections to form the end boards of a bed.

7. A convertible table bed comprising a pair of table sections each having supporting legs at their inner and outer ends and a hinged leaf adapted to be swung down to cover the sections when used as a table, and hinged sections connecting the inner ends of the table sections adapted to be swung down between the legs at the inner ends of the table sections when used as a table and adapted to be swung up between the sections to hold the same extended when used as a b d, said leaves being adapted to be swung up upon their respective sections to form the end boards of a bed. i

S. A convertible table bed comprising a pair of end sections, hinged sections joining the end sections and adapted to be folded down between the same for collapsing the device into table form, leaves hinged to the end sections adapted to beswung down to form a table top and adapted to be raised to form the end boards of a bed, said hinged sections being adapted to be swung up to extend the end sections, and means for locking the hinged sections in raised position.
