The invention has for an lobjfectto effect improvements in magazine hammers, aiming to simplify the construction thereof, and improve the functionvof such devices,as well as to produce new and novel structure attaining the ends in view.- It is an aim to provide a device of this character which may be manipulated with one hand to feed and hold nails in a position upon a hammer whereby they may be started in wood or the like, and the driving of such nails completed withthe same implement, with speed and rapidity. It is also purpose to enable the embodiment of the necessary mechanism in such light and compact form that the com-:
bined hammer and magazine parts may be readily'manipulatedand will not be objec-v tionable because of clumsiness or peculiarity in form. It is also an'aim to provide an appliance of this character which may be readily and quickly taken down for cleaning or adjustment without requiring expert me chanical knowledge or special tools.

There is illustrated I a magazine hammer comprising a handle body. portion 1O which may be formed of any suitablen'iaterial, as aluminum, or wood, and carried thereby there is a face block 11 and blade l2,-each of which may be formed of such metal as customarily employed inthe art of hammer making. ,The outer part ofthe handle por tion is hollow, to form a "reservoir 13, the inner end of which is reduced so as to discharge into a recess lit formed in the handle and opening on the left face of the handle body whenthe hammer is in position for engagement ofi'ts face upon a nail to be driven. This recess. la is rectangular in form, and opens on the underside of the handle as well as upon the left side, extending from a .point near the middle of the handle, tothe end thereof, extending through what would be the poll of the hammer head in ordinary cases. The outer handle portion may be swelled or otherwise formed to afford a comfortable grip for the user.
Engaged in the recess 14, but'stopping short of its upper side so as to form a nail passage 14, there IS afeed block l7, having flange portions '18 secured by screws upon the plate- 16 and the handle body atfthe inner end of the recess 14 respectively. The block 17 is bifurcated by the formation of a slot 19 therein opening on the forward end of the block, the lower furcation 20 stopping short of the plate 16, while the upper one abuts the plate snugly, at the part where the flange 18 is formed to engage over the plate 16. The channel 141 is closed at the outer side by a plate 21, which maybe of metal or glass, the latter enabling an operator to quickly observe whether nails are being properly fed through the device. The reservoir13 opens on the rear end of'the handle, and is closed by a pivoted plate 22 of a suitable nature. By this structure nails may be introduced into the reservoir 13. By tilting the hammer downwardly toward its forward end nails are caused to feed into the channel it, the forward part of the reservoir being By the shortening of the portion 20 of the block 17, a lateral passage 23 is formed leading from the slot19, so that when the hammer is positioned with its left side downwardly nails feeding through the block 17 may pass laterally toward the left side of the hammer. i
The body of the handle 10 atthe forward lower part of the recess 1% stops short of the plate 16 so as to form a continuation of the passage 23, and reciprooable in a suitable recess in the right hand side of the hammer when the face is presented downwardly there is a T-shaped plate 24, spring-pressed soas to lie normally toward the forward end of the hammer and having a-nail-shaped slot 25 therein then alined with the passage 23, and reciprocable for movement of the slot 25 inwardly of the passage 23 in a direction longitudinally of the hammer handle. The head portion 26 of the plate 24 projects intothe face block of the hammer, which is suitably formed to permit this as indicated clearly at 27 in Figs. 3 and 8. The plate 24: is retained in the handle by means of a cover plate 28 suitably set flush in the handle; and the plate 24:, its spring and the cover plate may be removed as a unit assembly, as shown in Fig. 1, by reason of the construction followed. The stem portion 29 of the plate 2 1 extends longitudinally toward the rear part of the handle, and is formed with a lateral lug 3O engaging in an extension 31 of the recess in which the plate is slidably fitted, the extension 31 being of greater dimension longitudinally of the handle than the lug, so as to permit longitudinal reciprocation of the plate. In this position, the. nail will be unsupported except where its head portion rests upon the sides of the slot 32, thehead being too large to pass through the narrow end portions of this slot. Consequently the point of the shank will fall through the slot and the nail hangs'suspended at the narrow end of the slot. The material of the cover plate is slightly recessed at 37 in this part so that the nail head will drop below the plane of the trigger plate, whereby when the trigger is released the flat portion 36 of the trigger plate will move over the slot 32.
The nail may then be driven by delivering one blow with suflicient force to enter the point of the nail into the Work a sufiicient distance to support the nail, after which the hammer head is swung slightly to the left, the entered nail being held stationary by the work, so that the wider portion of the slot 32 is brought beneath the head of the nail, permitting the hammer to be raised away from the nail, and its driving continued, with the face of the hammer in the ordinary way.
In Figs. 10 and following of the drawings, there is illustrated another embodiment of the invention which may be considered preferable, under some circumstances, this device being arranged in two hingedly connected parts whichmay be swung upon their pivots to open the device and expose the various working parts, so that it may be quickly cleaned or repaired.

The recess 46 opens upon the inner and lower sides 'of the handle section and 'hasset therein a feed block 47 bifurcated to form a feed slot 48 therein, one side of the block being shorter than the other to form a lateral outlet passage 49, the edge. portion'of the block abutting on the slot and passage being suitably cut-away to permit the ready passage of a nail head, the slot 48, however, being only wide enough to permit free movement of the nail shanks therethrough. In order to accommodate nails of greater len th, the feed block may be extended laterally from the handle a distance toward the hammer face as at 50. The cover section 42"has a hinged or other connection with the handle 1 formedin the cover. section 42 adapted to aline with the nail slot 53 of the trigger plate when the trigger plate is at the rear limit of its movement. This slot opens at its outer side upon a'circ ular discharge feed passage 54 formed within the cover section 42 and leading toward the hammer face. Belowthe slot 53 of the trigger plate, a lateral extension 55 is formed on the head of the trigger plate projected outwardly through a slot 56 opening through the side of the feed passage 54, so that the member 55 may project across this passage at times for engagement upon a nail head to drive the same. This extension 55 clears the passage 54' when the trigger plate is at the forward limit of its movement. Extending across the passage 54 a short distance below the slot 56, there is a resilient device 58 to engage under and support the head of a nail yieldably against passage outwardly from the hammer. Driving of this nail may then be continued, pressure being maintained on the trigger to hold the triggerplateat its rear limit of movement to prevent projection of a succeeding nail upon the hammer face, and upon release of the trigger a new nail will fall threughthe passage 55 into position for driving, allowing a repetition of the operationdescribed, as long it is i desired to continue the driving of nails, or
the supply in the reservoir continues.
If desired, the passage 54' may open through the outer face of the cover section, and be closedby' a door plate 60, thereby enabling ready access to the discharge passage in case it should be necessary.
What is claimed:
1. A device of the character described comprising a hammer having a nail reservoir, nail ordering means associated therewith, a guide-way leading therefrom formed in the hammer and having a lateral delivery part, an ofi'set discharge slot being formed in the hammer, adjacent said delivery part of the first named slot, a trigger constructed to close said delivery slot at one position and movable to engage a nail in the delivery slot to shift the same to said discharge slot, said discharge; slot including means togreleasably engage a, nail while in 1 driving position. i

A hammer of the character described comprising a body having a handle portion and-head portion formed in two parts, di -Q vidednear th'el majorplane of the handle and head, a nail feeding slot formed in the handle portionz'of one section, a nail shank gnidingblock set removably-in saidsection beside the slot and bifurcated to receive the shanks ofnails slidably therein, one furcation being shorter than the other, said section beingrecessed in the block, therecess being the full length of the blockincluding its longer fiircations, whereby theshort furcation will stop short of (one end of the rev-W cess, a cover section of the hammer having a'T-shapedrecess'therein, a 'F-shaped trig-A ger plate slidable therein having a nail shaped slot adapted to aline with the space at the end of said short furcation at one position. of the trigger plate, yielding means to hold the trigger plate at one limit of its movement, La nail receiving wslot being formedjin the second section of the hammer inwardly of theltrigger part when in initial position, communicating with said T-shaped recess whereby to receive from said trigger slot ,a nail at times, said slotin the second section'of the hammer extended to the hammer face of the head, and means to releasably engagea nail head in the last named, slotin position. with its point projected; from the inner face, saidtrigger having a part positioned to engage across the last named slot above an engagednail head at one position'of the triggerplate, said trigger plate having a lug thereon to project through the side of said slot in the sec: ond section and reciprocable longitudinally thereaeross.
