Description

M. S. DICKSON.
CAN OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED 1AM.26.1920.

PATENT OFFICE.
MAE S. DICKSON, 0F HUBBARD WOODS, ILLINOIS;
CAIN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed January 26, 1920. Serial No. 353,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAE S. DICKSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Hubbard Woods, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Openers, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to that type of can opening implements in which a rocking movement is imparted to the cutter blade to attain a step-by-step circular cut in the top of the can to be opened, and has for its object:
To provide a simple and eflicient structural formation and association of parts providing means for effecting an initial puncture opening in the can top, and with which a powerful stress on the cutter plate is attained in a convenient and effective manner to attain a rapid opening of the can, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views from the respective outer and inner sides of the implement, illustrating the preferred arrangement of parts in the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the bearing plate or member of the instrument, by which bearing is had on the mar ginal rim of a can in an opening operation of the same. The plate 1 is of a flat rectangular shape and provided at its outer side with a depending flange or car 2 adapted to have bearing against the circular periphery of the can and prevent lateral movement of the instrument, in actual use.
4- designates the cutter plate preferably formed as an integral and angular extension of the aforesaid bearing plate 1 and formed with an open ended longitudinal slot or throat 3 dividing the plate 4: into a lower cutter member or blade 5 of a pointed form as shown, and into an upper member 6 constituting an integral and angular extensio n of the bearing plate 1.
i designates a fixed stem or shank extend iug away from the top of the bearing plate 1 and carrying a longitudinally arranged hand grip 8, the rear end of which is formed to fit the operators hand, while the forward end 9 is of a pointed formation adapted to effect a ready initial perforation of the can top, so that an entry of the point of the cutter blade 5 may be made in the operation of opening the can.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A can opener of the type described, the combination of a bearing plate carrying guiding and opeuing means, a stem connected centrally at the mid-length of said plate, and a longitudinally extending hand grip connected at its mid-length to said stem to afford finger grips at each side of the stem, the forward end of the hand grip having a pointed formation.
Signed at Winter Park, Fla, this 21st day of January, 1920.
MAE S. DIOKSON.
