UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CHOMOS, 0F TOLEDO, OHIO.
Application filed November 28, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHoMos, citizen of Hungary, and resident of Toledo, in the county f Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopical Bed and Collapsible-Chair Combination, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to furniture for bedrooms especially to beds, and chairs adapted for use in connection therewith.
The object of this invention is the provision of a combined bed and chair which can be used to advantage where space is limited, but which can readily be enlarged and unfolded when desired.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a foldable chair for use in connection with the bed, for undressing, for holding clothes thereon, and for a seat, but which can easily be folded out of the wa i when not in use.
1 still further object of this invention is the provision of a bed and a spring therefor, both readily adjustable in width.
To attain these and other objects, I cinploy the devices shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention, showing the chair part thereof unfolded for use.
Fig. 2 is a side view of my invention, showing the bed extended and the chair unfolded.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the same showing the bed in its narrowest position and the chair in its folded position.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the chair part of my invention, showing the back folded on to the seat.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the bed spring.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, the bed portion thereof consists of adjustable bed ends connected by the usual side bars 4. Each of said ends is made up of two sections 1 and 2. To the usual upright corner post of section 1 is attached horizontal extension bars 5 havin grooves 6 therein- In section 2 of the bed end, horizontal ungrooved extension bars 7 are attached to the corner post, and instead of grooves, have pins 8 attached for engagement with slots 6, whereby the parts 1 and 2 are made slidable one over the other for widthwise adjustment of the end Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920. Serial No. 341,091.
sections. An auxiliary le 17 is attached t the end of extension bar% and slides with it, spherical casters 36 being provided for said leg 17 and for the bed posts to allow easy movement along the floor when necessary.
The bedspring 9 for use with my adjustable bed is composed of the U-shaped bars it) and 11 to which the usual springs 18 and 19 are fastened. ar 10 is smaller than bar 11 and is adapted to telescope into the larger bar for sliding therein. To bar 10 is attached roller pin 13 having enlarged collar thereon for preventing relative longitudinal movement of the parts. Said pin 13 slides in groove 12 of bar 11 when the width of the spring is changed. The thickness of bar 11 and of springs 19 is such that there is no interference to the sliding of springs 18 and bar 10, when the bedspring 9 is collapsed, though the heights of the bedspring halves are not appreciably different.
To fold the chair, hook 20 and braces 19 and 39 are detached from the back and legs, which are then folded on to seat 15, forming a compact rectangular mass, which is then swung about hinge 25 on to the under side of the bed. To hold said folded chair in place under the bed, hook arm 29, supported by bracket 30, from rods 31 which run from end to end of the bed, is provided, said arm being pressed toward side 4 by sprin 32, attached at one end, to bracket 30. rm 29 being pivoted at its upper end to bracket 30, is thrown back against the action of spring 32 when the folded chair is pushed up toward the under side of the bed. After the folded back 16 of said chair is pushed past the hook portion of the arm 29, said arm is pressed forward again by spring 32 to its normal position, whereby the hook of arm 39 engages the back 16 which rest on said hook, holding the folded chair in place.
For releasing the chair, bent lever 28, attached to arm 29 at point 35 and suitably shaped to clear the chair both in the folded and unfolded positions, is operated by pull ing the upper end of lever 26, attached to said lever 28 at 34, away from side bar 4- W' hen this is done lever 26, being pivoted at 33 to side bar 4, acts to disengage the hook end of arm 29 from the chair, allowing said chair to drop down to a position from which it can readily be swung out and unfolded.
Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination of means for holding a folded chair in place under a bed, comprising rods attached to the bed ends and arranged lengthwise of said bed, a bracket mounted on said rods, an arm pivoted about one end of Said bracket and a spring attached at one end to said bracket and arranged to put pressure on said arm for causing said arm to support said folded chair, and a lever for releasing said chair holding means for allowing said chair to be unfolded for use.
2. In combination with a bed, means for holding a foldable chair in place under said bed and for allowing the release of said chair for unfolding, comprising rods attached between the bed ends, a bracket mounted on said rods, a spring pressed arm pivoted at one end about said bracket for holding said chair in its folded position, a connecting lever lying in a horizontal. plane attached at one end to the other end of said arm and a substantially vertical lever pivoted to the side of said bed and connected at its lower end to said connecting lever for allowing said arm to be operated through said lever to release said chair.
Signed at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, this 24th day of November, A. D. 1919.
JOHN CHOMOS.
