Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 18,1919. Serial No. 318,284.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon H. GIBSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain. new and useful Improvement in Tank-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
lrly. invention relates to tank cars and particularly to the valve structures at the bottoms thereof. These valves are commonly provided with downwardly spring pressed stems to maintain. the valves closed. It was hitherto possible to unlawfully remove the contents of the cars by pressing these valves u nvardly by means of rods introduced upwardly through the discharge nozzles depending from the cars and opened and closed at their upper ends by the valves. I obviate such tampering with said valves by introducing guards in the bores of the nozzles which are thus closed to the upward passage of valve opening rods, but are open to the downflow of car contents.
I will explain my invention fully by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a portion of a tank car and the valve structure of my invention; Fig. 2 is 'a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1; and gig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures. v
The tank portion, 1 of the tank car has the usual or suitable discharge opening 2 in its bottom portion. The flange 3 of the discharge nozzle 4 is riveted to the portion of the tank bottom surrounding its discharge opening, the bore of this nozzle being alined with the opening 2. The upper end of the nozzle is formed with a valve seat 5 that receives the valve 6. A guiding extension 7 depends from the valve and is movable up and down within a guiding sleeve 8 that is co-axial with the nozzle and is supported within the bore thereof by the spider 9. This arrangement prevents the tilting of the valve when it is not closed and properly directs the valve to and from its seat. A bridge piece 10 is carried by the upper side of the valve and extends within the tank. An opening 11 in the top of this bridge guides the downwardly spring pressed valve rod into engagement with the valve, the rod being so assembled with the valve as practically to constitute its stem.
It was hitherto possible to pass a rod upwardly between the legs of the spider 9 to open the valve against the downward pressure exerted upon the valve by the rod 12. I obviate this possibility by means of the imperforate guard plate 13 disposed in the bore of the nozzle transversely thereof but not entirely across the same. This guard plate is carried upon the legs 14 projecting upwardly from the inner edge of the ring 15 merged with the nozzle and located within its bore. The bore 17 is substantially covered by the guard 3, the extension 16 thus cooperating'with said guard in protecting the valve. This ring also acts as a guard to prevent rods from passing where it is located. The contents of the tank car may flow downwardly between the legs 14:, but the upward passage of a rod is obviated by the guard. The nozzle has a lower extension 16 threaded upon the bottom end of the nozzle'and having a bore 17 constituting a lower but reduced continuation of the 1102- zle bore. A second guard 18-is disposed within and carried by this nozzle continuation to supplement the function of the first. This second guard and parts associated therewith are similar to the first and these parts of the second guard similar to parts of the first guard are given similar characters of reference with prime exponents added. The entire nozzle structure is closed by the cap 18that is itself closed by the'plug 19.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:

vided with a rod above the same for deterand supported by the nozzle; and a leg structure carried by this ring and connected with the guard to locate and support the latter.
2. A tank car structure including the tank thereof having a discharge opening in its bottom portion; a nozzle depending from the tank and communicating at its upper end with said discharge opening; a valve for closing said discharge opening and provided with a rod above the same for determining its position; a nozzle extension separably connected with the lower end of the nozzle; a guard within the bore of the nozzle there being spar. between this guard and the nozzle for the downiiow of car contents; and a leg structure carried by said extension and carrying said guard.
3. A tank car structure including the tank thereof having a discharge opening in its bottom portion; a nozzle depending from the tank and communicating at its upper end with said discharge opening; a valve for closing said discharge opening and provided with a rod above the same for determining its position; a nozzle extension separably connected with the lower end of the nozzle,
the bore of the nozzle extension being less than the bore of the balance of the nozzle; and a guard within the bore of the nozzle and covering the bore of the nozzle exten sion there being space between this guard and the nozzle for the downflow of car contents.
4. A tank car structure including the tank thereof having a discharge opening in its bottom portion: a nozzle depending .from the tank and connnunicating at its upper end with said discharge opening; a valve for closing said discharge opening and provided with a rod above the same for determining its position; a nozzle extension at'the lower end Off/he nozzle, the bore of the nozzle extension being. less than the bore of the balance of thenozzle; and a'guard within the bore of the nozzle and covering the bore of the nozzle extension, there being space between this guard and the nozzle for the downflow of car contents.
